Emirates airline marks the arrival of its non-stop eco-efficient service between Dubai and San Francisco

Emirates, one of the world’s fastest-growing international airlines, marks the arrival of its first non-stop service between Dubai and San Francisco, at San Francisco International Airport (SFO).

At a media briefing held after the arrival of the flight, His Highness Sheikh Ahmed bin Saeed Al-Maktoum, Chairman and Chief Executive Emirates Airline and Group was joined by Steve Kava, San Francisco Mayor’s Chief of Staff, and San Francisco International Airport Director John Martin.

“Emirates promises Bay Area travellers and businesspeople an opportunity to reach Dubai and key transit markets including the Indian Subcontinent and Africa easily and more quickly than ever before,” said Sheikh Ahmed.

“This new service from SFO creates a critical new connection between Northern California and Dubai – a destination for business flights and tourism unlike any other in the world. We look forward to contributing a significant, positive economic impact for San Francisco and its surrounding region with our new service,” he added.

The arrival of Emirates airline will increase tourism and business traffic, bringing in travellers from the Middle East, Indian Subcontinent and Africa; creating new jobs in the Bay Area while generating state and local tax, and business revenues. The non-stop air link will also help the growth of trade between California and the UAE which in 2007 saw close to $950 million worth of exports.

“The arrival of Emirates Airline to San Francisco is an economic boon for the city of San Francisco,” said San Francisco Mayor Gavin Newsom. “Emirates’ new route will bring new jobs and revenue to San Francisco, while creating a vital new corridor for business and tourism between the Bay Area and Dubai.”

“The greater the global connections the greater the success for regions like the Bay Area and Dubai within the new global economy,” said Jim Wunderman, President and CEO of the Bay Area Council. “The Bay Area has the fourth highest concentration of Forbes 2,000 Global Companies and 645 foreign-owned company subsidiaries. In uncertain times, the Bay Area needs the economic stimulus and expansion of business opportunities this launch represents.”

Emirates’ inaugural flight to Dubai also demonstrated the best the airline industry can offer in environmental efficiency. The first Dubai-San Francisco non-stop service marked the world’s longest green flight, on which Emirates employed multiple eco-efficient initiatives to save fuel and emissions.

Emirates has made a multi-billion-dollar investment in new, eco-efficient aircraft, and on its San Francisco route it will deploy the state-of-the-art Boeing 777-200LR. Emirates worked closely with government agencies in Dubai, Iceland, Russia, Canada the United States and other countries to plot the most environmentally-conscientious trip possible to save approximately 2,000 gallons of fuel and 40,000 pounds of carbon emissions on the 16-hour direct service.

The 777-200LR is a member of the most fuel-efficient airplane family operating today. Along with its ability to connect Dubai International Airport and San Francisco non-stop, the 777-200LR brings better environmental performance to destinations around the world. In one year, a fleet of 16 twin-engine aircraft powered by GE90 engines will emit 141,000 fewer tons of greenhouse gas emissions than airframes requiring four engines.

About the Emirates Airline:
Emirates, the Dubai-based international airline, is one of the world’s most successful and rapidly-expanding airlines. With a focus on high quality service and industry-leading products, Emirates has received over 400 international awards and accolades for excellence since its inception in 1985. Emirates is currently the only airline to operate non-stop flights to six continents from one hub.

Christmas Car Hire Tips by Carrentals.co.uk

With some car hire companies accused of increasing their prices over the busy festive period, comparison site Carrentals.co.uk is offering its top tips to help Christmas travellers get the best deals.

Gareth Robinson, managing director of Carrentals.co.uk which compares prices from up to 50 different rental companies, says: “The festive season is one of the busiest times for car rental companies, but in the current climate customers need to know they are getting the best possible price. It’s all too easy to feel rushed into booking the first car you find because of concerns over availability. There are still cars available, but it is worth taking the time to shop around early to compare and secure the right deal.”

Traditionally demand in key locations such as London, Spain and Florida often out-strips supply, meaning prices can be significantly higher than at other times of the year.

To help, Carrentals.co.uk is offering its Christmas Car Hire Tips –

• 1) Book early – It may be easier said than done, but booking in advance will give you access to better prices. The later you leave it the less choice you will have, so get organised and book as early as possible – this way you will not only get a better selection of vehicles, but also the best deals.

• 2) Compare the market – In the credit crunch comparing prices is becoming best practice, so extend this to your car hire. Make sure to compare both the well-known brands and smaller specialist companies, and always check you are comparing like for like.

• 3) Be flexible – Try to be flexible in your car hire requirements and you could save money. Picking up a car from a slightly different location or varying your collection and drop off dates may give you a better deal, or try opting for a different type of car – keeping your options open and being more flexible means you can take advantage of the best prices.

• 4) Pre-book extras – If you need extras such as snow chains or child seats, make sure you book them in advance. Car Rental companies generally have a limited supply of items such as this, so make sure you book them at the start rather than leaving them to
when you pick up the car and either missing out or having to pay a premium.

• 5) Check your insurance – always check your insurance policy on your car hire, but if you think you’ll rent a few cars over the year look at options from companies such as insurance4carhire. This will cover the excess charges, to ensure you’re not left out of pocket should you be involved in an accident.

Carrentals.co.uk compares car hire deals from up to 50 rental companies, including Holiday Autos, Budget, EasyCar and Thrifty, in over 9,000 locations around the World, and also offers airport parking/hotels and insurance from insurance4carhire.com.

With prices from as little as £13 per day car hire comparator Carrentals.co.uk advises skiers to book their cars early to avoid disappointment

With heavy snowfall already reported in the Alps, car hire comparator Carrentals.co.uk is advising customers to book ski car hire early to secure the best prices and essential accessories such as snow chains and child seats.

Many resorts in Switzerland, Austria and Italy are enjoying prime conditions, opening early to make the most of the snowfall, with skiers being attracted to snow levels of up to 130cm in places.

Gareth Robinson, managing director of Carrentals.co.uk, says: “With the ski resorts enjoying a fantastic start to the season, we’ve seen demand for car hire in these areas jump significantly over the last couple of weeks. There is still availability but prices for rental can vary significantly between suppliers, so our advice is to compare the best deals in advance and book early to secure specific requirements such as snow chains and baby seats.”

Carrentals.co.uk compares car hire deals from leading rental companies in over 9,000 locations, including ski destinations such as Lyon, Turin and Chambery, with prices starting from just £13* per day at Aspen; £18* per day in Lyon; and £21* per day at Banff and Geneva.

Gareth added: “If this level of snow fall continues we are likely to see a rush in bookings over the next couple of weeks. Leaving car hire to the last minute, or, worse, leaving it until you arrive in resort, is likely to mean you pay a premium to secure the car you need, so book early and shop around for the best prices.”

Carrentals.co.uk compares car hire prices from up to 50 companies including Holiday Autos, Alamo, Budget and Thrifty. To compare the best ski deals visit www.carrentals.co.uk.

*Prices are based on seven-day rental from 31 January and are subject to change.

The Door County Outpost Gallery And Cafe Is Offering A Range Of Services To Tourists Including Espresso Cafe, Guided Kayak Tours, Live Music, Wine Tasting, Retail, Art And More

When husband and wife team Carl and Susan Hruza relocated their business to Door County WI it was with a clear vision of the future. Owners of a successful Internet business and two art gallery locations in North Eastern Wisconsin, the Hruza’s deliberated long and hard before deciding to move their businesses to Door County. “We knew that Door County would present a very different challenge to that of our base in Green Lake WI. Even though both Green Lake and Door County are geared predominantly towards the tourism market, Door County has been leading a ‘refocus’ on how to serve and benefit from tourism”, said Carl Hruza.

Hruza went on to explain, “tourism has taken on a different shape in recent years. Five years ago the typical family vacation to Door County would involve a leisurely drive from the suburbs of Chicago, a week-long stay at a local campground or motel, quiet walks on the beach and wandering around the many galleries and gift-shops in search of locally made merchandise. Nowadays tourists are intent on getting much more out of a shorter stay. The average stay length has fallen from 7 days to 4 and people arrive with their schedules booked in advance so they can take full advantage of their time in the area. And the changes do not end there. Most people are looking for leisure activities taking place at a faster pace than in years previous. Outdoor adventure sports are becoming popular, kayaking, cycling, kite-boarding, even scuba diving. At nights they want to combine good affordable food with live entertainment. It’s a much more demanding tourist and we’ve setup our business to provide people with exactly what they want”.

The Hruza’s have leased a 3500 sq ft development a half mile south of Egg Harbor on HWY 42. The Door County Outpost Gallery and Café is a beautifully constructed log cabin, made from locally sourced timbers and designed with a bright, open and spacious feel.

“Inside and outside the Outpost we have a lot to offer our visitors”, said Susan Hruza. “We run an espresso café offering great food and coffee with locally made wines and micro-beers. We have a concert venue (The Rainbow Room), a fine art gallery (The Forte Gallery), a gift shop with soaps and sundries (Door County Soap Company), and daily wine tasting events. In addition, we are home to Door County Kayak Tours, who operate their popular cave tours from our location. When visitors arrive at the Outpost in the morning, we can keep them entertained for the whole day. Breakfast starts at 7.30 am after which visitors can head out onto the waters with a Kayak tour and explore the caves and other popular kayaking destinations. They arrive back around noon for lunch, then take in a tour of the art gallery, shop at our gift store, indulge in a wine tasting then perhaps head back to their hotel room for an hours relaxation. At 5.30 pm on concert nights we serve dinner, after which visitors can then take in live music, often from nationally acclaimed touring artists playing acoustic folk, jazz, blues or world music”. Weekend visitors to the Door County Outpost Gallery and Café can invariably enjoy one or more outdoor events taking place on the deck or on the 10.5 acres of lawned gardens. “We have many events on the schedule for the Summer and Fall seasons, including our Annual Labor Day Quilt Show and our Annual Juried Fine Art Fair, which lands on October 10/11 in 2009. In addition, we have regular weekend cookouts, offering the best in Wisconsin traditional foods including local beers and wines”, said Susan Hruza.

The focus at the Outpost is to offer as much entertainment as possible, without people having to spend time in the car. “It’s a four to six hour drive to Door County for many of our visiting couples and families, the last thing they want to do when they get here is spend more time in the car. We give people a great experience, the chance to see Door County from a different perspective and to spend a great day full of interesting things to do”, said Carl Hruza.

The Striking Parallels between the Christian Nativity Story and the Pagan Birth of Zeus

Experts have said that religions evolve according to the needs of their followers. The parallels between the Nativity story and the myth of the birth of Zeus are close because the traditions that have surrounded the myths of Zeus’ life may have transferred to that of Jesus Christ.

This December 25, the whole of the Christian world will be commemorating once again the birth of their Messiah, Jesus Christ. Christian families, wherever they are, would be gathering at home to eat a Christmas feast, exchange gifts, sing carols, and just be together as they bask in the warmth of the Yuletide cheer.

The traditions surrounding the birth of Christ have been around for the last two thousand years. According to the Christian Orthodox traditions, Christ was born in a manger in a cave, surrounded by animals that gave him warmth. The story further states that the reason why Jesus was born in a humble manger instead of at home where he should have been is that King Herod issued an order to kill all the newborn boys at the time to eliminate any contenders to the throne.

Even though the Christian Nativity story has been in existence for two thousand years, there actually exists a very similar tale, except that the setting of this tale occurred hundreds of years before the birth of Christ. This tale is none other than that of the birth of Zeus.

Zeus, as most people know, is the king of all the gods of Olympus. The other gods of the Greek pantheon bend over his might. But this chief of Greek gods was also born in humble circumstances, and these circumstances closely parallel those of Jesus Christ.

Where Christ was born in a manger in a cave, Zeus was also born in a cave. Where Christ was surrounded by animals that gave him warmth when he was born, Zeus was brought sustenance by the she-goat Amalthea. Where Christ was hidden from King Herod, Zeus was also hidden, this time from his father Cronus, who ate his other children whole.

Furthermore, Christians believe that Christ was crucified, died and was resurrected. The myths of Crete in Greece have it that the Cretan-born Zeus died in the autumn of each year and was reborn again in spring.

It may be uncanny to the layman just how similar the Nativity story and the story of the birth of Zeus are. But experts think differently; they believe that religions evolve down the ages and adapt to the new conditions set by the people following them. Nonetheless, no matter how much the religion has changed, it always covers some basic human need that does not ever change.

Thus, even though Christians now worship Christ and celebrate his birthday on December 25, people before them – the Greek pagans, if you will – venerated Zeus in Christ’s stead. But old traditions die hard, especially if they have stood the test of time.

On December 25, as people from all over the world commemorate the birth of Christ, it would simply be interesting to think that once, long ago, long before Christ was even born, there was another god who occupied his place.

Villaplus.com Scores Highly In Independent Travolution Test To Find Best Villa Operator Website

VillaPlus.com has been named second for villa holiday websites, in the latest test by Travolution.

The results were based on a recent user test, which was performed by Cass Heaphy, Marketing Director of Strange Creative and Digital Marketing Agency. The test criterion was carried out on a number of villa operator’s websites with the aim to find a villa holiday to Menorca for a family of four in July 2009.

Out of the ten websites reviewed, VillaPlus.com scored highly with regards to the information and content of the current website. Cass Heaphy commented: “The property data on the site is excellent with extensive details including a full breakdown of villa facilities, large image gallery, videos, floor plans, local beaches, local area and Google and Microsoft maps. The depth of information makes the VillaPlus.com website very compelling.”

However, the review did highlight that VillaPlus.com does not currently feature user ratings or reviews. Simon Lifford, VillaPlus.com’s Sales and Marketing Manager commented: “VillaPlus.com is currently developing a new version of the website which will feature client’s reviews on the individual villa descriptions pages. The introduction of this feature will enhance the user experience by enabling clients to make a more informed choice when selecting their holiday villa.”

The review drew attention to the sites information architecture being a little awkward to navigate, unless the user selected the search widget to access villa availability, as well as a need for a more sophisticated filtering system.

VillaPlus.com‘s new website will feature new and improved search and filtering facilities. The new search facilities will allow the user to carry out an all destination villa search, as well as being able to filter the results by price, then name of the destination of resort, the amont of seclusion offered, whether or not a car is necessary for the area, air conditioning and pool heating facilities.

VillaPlus.com‘s new search facility will also feature live flight availability which will allow the user to select their preferred flights when submitting a booking online. The new facilities will make it easier for users to find the villa holiday which best suites their requirements.

Cess Heaphy’s article also emphasised the importance of travel websites being trustworthy, especially in light of the current economic climate and the collapse of operators such as the XL Group. To build on the trust VillaPlus.com has with its users, the company will be launching a new About Us section on the website to support their Air Travel Organisers Licensing (ATOL) bonding and the company’s 22 years within the industry. The new About Us section will be designed to allow the user to learn more about the company’s history, meet the highly experienced VillaPlus.com team and book their VillaPlus.com holiday in the utmost confidence.

Overall, VillaPlus.com‘s new website will give the user an enhanced and efficient holiday booking experience, through making it quicker and easier to find the perfect villa holiday. The new version of the VillaPlus.com website is due to be released at the end of the year.

Jumeirah Has Unveiled Expansion Plans For Wild Wadi Water Park With The Arrival Of The Latest Rides Available In The Market

Jumeirah, the Dubai-based luxury hotel group and a member of Dubai Holding, has revealed expansion plans for Wild Wadi Water Park with the arrival of the latest rides available on the market.

Wild Wadi Water Park has been one of Dubai’s favourite family destinations for the last nine years and the new rides, which are a first for the region, can be enjoyed by the entire family, providing hours of fun for all ages.

The first ride to be added next year is called ‘Tantrum Alley’, which will incorporate two large sections of downhill waterslides and two tornados. Guests seated on a four person tube will travel downhill to enter the first tornado where they slide back and forth several times, then circle around and around in the eye of the storm before exiting and hitting the second tornado, after which they splash out into the pool.

The second ride, known as ‘Behemoth Bowl’ is equally as adventurous and consists of two sections of downhill waterslides and the looming ‘bowl’. Guests are seated on a four person tube, travelling downhill to the bowl, where they are hurtled into a spiralling spin and then dropped into the slide, ending with a splash in the pool.

Chris Perry, General Manager of Wild Wadi Water Park, commented: “Wild Wadi is all about fun and is an ideal place for families to escape the hustle and bustle of everyday life. As water park industry leaders, we remain committed to Jumeirah’s promise to ‘Stay Different’ and offer our guests the latest wild rides that cannot be found anywhere else in the region.”

In order to prepare the park for these incredible slides, Wild Wadi will be closed from January 22nd until February 11th, 2009, before re-opening on February 12th. After this date, the park will continue operating while Tantrum Alley and Behemoth Bowl are being constructed, with a minimum disturbance to the guests.

Jumeirah will add the two new rides – ‘Tantrum Alley’ and ‘Behemoth Bowl’ – to Wild Wadi Water Park in 2009.

Hotels.Com Has Revealed That Four Out Of Five Women Expect Their Partner To Fork Out The Full Cost Of Their First Mini Break Away

Hotels.com, the world’s most visited online accommodation website, has surveyed over 1000 members of match.com, the UK’s most popular online dating site, revealing that four out of five women (84%) expect their partner to pay the full cost of their first mini break away, even though 73% of women still expected to decide when and where they go.

The survey found that the average man is left with a bill of £351 for a romantic away-break while women almost equal that, spending £322 buying underwear, make up and new outfits to look the part.

Hotels.com also revealed that, when planning their first trip away, 32% of men are fearful of running out of things to say to their date while 18% of women are concerned about their partner seeing them first thing in the morning.

Other key findings that were revealed by the survey included that most new couples wait two to three months before going on their first mini break, but one in ten men said they would whisk their date away after just a couple of weeks of dating if they saw long term potential in the relationship. Men are also the most romantic of the sexes, with almost two thirds (60%) believing the most important aspect of planning a mini break was finding a romantic hotel compared to less than half of women (49%), who are more concerned with the facilities on offer such as the availability of a good restaurant or spa.

Alison Couper, Director of Communications for Hotels.com, said “It is interesting to see that men are expected to pay for first mini breaks while women spend the money on looking good. Cash conscious men who want to save a few precious pounds should look to sites like Hotels.com, where savings of up to 40% on romantic hotels around the UK and further afield, such as New York hotels and LA hotels, can often be found.”

Kate Taylor, relationship expert at match.com, said: “It could be said that the first mini break is the make or break of a new relationship. It’s often the first time couples have spent 48 hours in each other’s company – seeing each other first thing in the morning and compromising on what side of the bed each other sleeps on at night – so it’s not surprising that women want things to be perfect. Women love to be involved in planning the trip, as it helps them prepare the most stunning outfits and boast about the momentous occasion to all their friends. For women, a lot of the fun is in the anticipation and planning the extra little details.”

The Jumeirah Macau Hotel, scheduled for completion in 2013, will set a new standard for luxury hotel and hospitality services in the Chinese enclave when it emerges as a leading tourism and convention hub in the region. Strategically located amid the tourism epicentre of Cotai, the new Jumeirah hotel will enjoy a spectacular view of the Macau Dome, where the city’s major sports and cultural entertainment events are hosted.

“As the forerunner to introduce premium international hotels brands in Macau, we are once again ready to commit to investing in more diversified products as part of our dedicated blueprint in contributing to the city’s tourism industry,” said Ms. Pansy Ho. “Indeed, this major project came about at a time when some market players are uncertain about the future. Shun Tak’s view of the Macau economy is long term. Speaking on the new agreement struck with Jumeirah Group, Ms. Ho commented: “Internationally acclaimed for its capability and proven track record to operate and manage an enviable portfolio of high end luxury hotels around the globe, this partnership (with Jumeirah Group) is instrumental to Shun Tak’s strategy of establishing a strong foothold and market presence in the hotel and hospitality industries in the long run.”

Gerald Lawless, executive chairman of Jumeirah, said: “Jumeirah is recognised as one of the leading luxury international hotel brands, and is known for being the operator of the world famous Burj Al Arab, regarded as the world’s most luxurious hotel. This is the third management agreement that we have signed in China, with the first Jumeirah HanTang Xintiandi scheduled to open in Shanghai in 2009 and Jumeirah Guangzhou Hotel in 2011. We look forward to working with Shun Tak and to the opening of the Jumeirah Macau Hotel.”

The Shun Tak Group owns a portfolio of valuable hotel properties in Macau, including two of the first international hotel labels in the enclave, with a third to be launched as part of its One Central development. In 2008, with the scheduled completion of a new airport hotel adjacent to the Hong Kong International Airport, Shun Tak will enter the Hong Kong hotel market for the first time, a vital step to complement its strategic tourism and hospitality services network in the up and coming travel hub in Chek Lap Kok, Hong Kong.
