Stena Line, The Irish Sea’s Leading Ferry Company, And Tourism Ireland Are Encouraging British Holidaymakers To Discover Ireland’s Hidden Gems This Summer

Stena Line, the Irish Sea’s leading ferry company, and Tourism Ireland are encouraging British holidaymakers to discover Ireland’s hidden gems this summer.

stenaline

To mark the collaboration between Stena Line and Tourism Ireland, a major new advertising campaign aimed at boosting tourism in Ireland is to be launched. The new adverts will highlight what makes Ireland such an attractive and exciting destination for British holidaymakers, emphasising the fact that it’s within easy reach of Britain, and how straightforward and inexpensive it is to get there by car with Stena Line.

Stena Line’s UK Communications Manager, Nigel Tilson, said: “Together with Tourism Ireland we are highlighting compelling reasons to travel to Ireland.

“We can provide the perfect solution for couples and families wanting to get away for less. For British holidaymakers Ireland is close to home yet offers something completely different.

“Taking the ferry to Ireland makes so much sense. Travellers can bring their car, pack in as much luggage as they like, and then enjoy the freedom to explore once they get there.”

Hidden gems to entice British holidaymakers to Ireland include the little fishing village of Rathmullan on the banks of Lough Swilly in County Donegal and an island-hopping tour of the West Coast known as the Connemara Safari where tourists can see wild dolphins, grey seals, gannets and basking sharks.

Another attractive Irish destination is the Milk Market in Limerick, one of Ireland’s foremost farmers’ markets, offering an array of cheeses, fish and seaweeds.

Lawrence Bate, Director of Tourism Ireland, said: “Tourism Ireland is delighted to be working with Stena Line on this initiative. There is so much to do and see in Ireland, taking your car over with all your favourite things such as sporting equipment and toys makes great sense and affords great freedom to go where the road takes you. With offers such as those from Stena Line, there has never been a better time to discover Ireland.”

About Stena Line:

Stena Line is the market leader on the Irish Sea, offering the biggest ferry fleet and the widest choice of routes between Britain and Ireland, including ferries to Belfast from Stranraer, ferries to Larne from Fleetwood and routes from Holyhead to Dun Laoghaire and Dublin Port and Fishguard to Rosslare. The company carries over three million passengers on its Irish Sea routes each year, more than its rival operators combined.

British Airways is launching new twice-weekly flights to Montego Bay in Jamaica and Punta Cana in the Dominican Republic, reinforcing its position as the airline with more flights to the Caribbean than any other UK carrier. The new routes commence October 2009 with the airline also increasing services to other Caribbean favourites. Richard Tams, head of sales, commented that they are “popular destinations with our customers and it’s due to demand that we’re increasing the number of flights to the region.”

The addition of Montego Bay alongside the existing Gatwick-Kingston route makes it easier than ever before for customers to choose their perfect holiday to Jamaica. Customers will also be guaranteed discounts on flight plus hotel packages via the new dynamic holiday packages feature on the British Airways website. Accommodation in Montego Bay includes the secluded The Ritz-Carlton Golf & Spa Resort with its old world charm and the popular Rooms on the Beach in Ocho Rios – just five minutes from the world famous Dunns River Falls.

Increased frequencies from London Gatwick to other hotspots in the region mean the number of flights to St Lucia will increase from three to five a week, Barbados flights will rise from nine to ten, and flights to Port of Spain, Trinidad, from three to five times weekly.

By using the British Airways website, customers can book a stay at the four-star Cap Maison. The hotel is set in one of St Lucia’s most sought after areas and offers spectacular views of the ocean and the neighbouring island of Martinique. Travellers choosing Barbados holidays through British Airways can expect a warm Bajan welcome.

Another popular hotel in the area is The Crane. Located on the stunning south-east coast of Barbados, The Crane is the oldest operating hotel on the island. This cliff-top resort overlooks the renowned pink sands of Crane Beach. The latest addition to the hotel is the highly anticipated Crane Village which was launched in February 2009. Inspired by the architecture of an 18th century Barbadian town, the 55,000 square-foot Crane Village is the new heart of the resort community.

With a total of 13 destinations and 45 weekly flights to choose from, British Airways is showing its commitment to the Caribbean and making it easier than ever before for customers to book their dream Caribbean holidays.

Today, the celebration of gay culture has become a global event, with huge pride festivals taking place around the world in June, from Amsterdam to San Francisco.

1. Gay Hostel Puerta del Sol, Madrid
The top rated gay hostel on HostelBookers, Gay Hostel Puerta del Sol has an excellent central location in Madrid’s Puerto del Sol Square and offers free entry to some of the city’s most popular gay clubs.

2. El Misti Hostel Copacabana, Rio de Janeiro
In the heart of the action in Copacabana beach, this welcoming gay hostel in Rio de Janeiro attracts a cosmopolitan party crowd.

3. Gay Pizarro Hostal, Madrid
Situated in Madrid’s famous Chueca district, Gay Pizarro Hostal offers great advice on the local entertainment and a clean, affordable place to sleep.

4. Elements Hostel, San Francisco
Lying in the colourful Mission district of the notoriously liberal city, Elements Hostel is clean, modern and affordable.

5. London Hostel Gay House, London
Opened in 1984, this gay hostel in London is a well-established and sociable base for gay travellers exploring the city.

Whilst many hostels are gay-friendly, the number of hostels catering exclusively for gay and lesbian travellers is rising in the world’s top destinations, particularly in those cities which have a large gay community or annual pride festival.

Although hostels offer cheap accommodation, their main attraction is a sociable atmosphere and the opportunity to meet like-minded people – perfect for gay and lesbian travellers looking to make friends on the road.

Hotels.com Launches Nanolog Competition To Encourage Brits To Keep Travelling

Hotels.com, the world’s leading hotel website, has announced the launch of a new competition to encourage Britons to take a break, however short. The contest comes on the back of research that showed a 46%* increase in UK holidaymakers searching for single night holidays or ‘nanobreaks’ over the past year.

In keeping with the ‘nano’ theme, participants must create a ‘nanolog’ or mini blog about their nanobreak. The nanolog can be presented either as a series of Twitter posts, photos using Flickr or on video using YouTube.

These nanologs will be streamed live from the social media sites to a dedicated competition page on Hotels.com.

The person who posts the best entry – chosen by a judging panel – will win an extended nanobreak to Rio de Janeiro in Brazil for two, courtesy of TAP Portugal and the Caesar Park Ipanema hotel. Three runners up will receive one £200 Hotels.com voucher each.

The competition, open to UK residents over 18, will encourage participants to take a holiday, however short, even in these hard economic times.

Alison Couper, Communications Director for Hotels.com, said:

“The simple act of going on holiday for just a single night is relaxing and a change from the stresses and strains of life.

“All of our research shows that people see holidays as a right not a luxury and the rise in searches for nanobreaks is further evidence of holidaymakers’ determination to keep travelling.

“We hope this competition will reward that determination with a bit of creative fun and encourage more people to take a much needed break.”

Full details of the competition, which closes on September 1st 2009, can be found at the Hotels.com website.

Extended Holidays: The Ideal Way To Unwind

Since the 1980s, air travel has become ever more popular and today, jetting off to New York for a weekend or Paris for the day is commonplace. Even with the global economic recession squeezing household budgets, families are still making time to visit far away (but still affordable) places. Yet how much can you really see of a country in a few days, or even a week? In destinations as vast and culturally diverse as India and China, for instance, even three weeks might not be enough to get a well-rounded taste of what the country offers.

insurance travel

If you’re really hoping to absorb a foreign culture, a long stay is well worth considering. Planning extended bouts of travel may seem daunting, but if you know what you want to get out of a trip – and you’ve got like minded company along for the ride – a long holiday could be one of the most enjoyable experiences of your life.

Extended holidays are not just for gap years

Whether you’re 40 or 60, it’s often possible to arrange a sabbatical from work in order to enjoy an extended holiday overseas. Some companies actively encourage such expeditions and may see it as part of enriching the skill set of their workforce. What’s more, if you’ve recently been made unemployed and hope to spend some time out of the job market before diving back in, a long holiday could be just what you need. This could be especially true if you’re single and you’ve collected a significant amount of money in your savings account which isn’t benefiting from today’s low interest rates.

Of course, if an extended holiday is something you want to pursue but you’re unprepared or simply unable to embark on one just yet, it might be something that’s worth considering for your retirement. Many retired couples spend six months of every year travelling abroad and see it as the ideal way to spend their old age.

Extended holidays can take on a variety of forms. Perhaps you’ve always harboured a desire to traverse every corner of Russia; taking two months away from work to experience the Trans-Siberian Railway from Moscow to Vladivostok would be the realisation of a dream. On the other hand, you could spend four months backpacking across South America, from Venezuela and Brazil to the very tip of Argentina and Chile.

Alternatively, if you’d like your extended travel experience to possess a wider purpose, there are plenty of groups who organise charity work camps in developing countries, from South Africa to Sri Lanka, where you could be doing anything from building wells and schools to helping AIDS orphans.

Your long holiday check list

However old you are when you take your extended holiday, it’s crucial to remember the essentials. For starters, double check your passport’s expiry date: you need at least six months left on your passport in order to travel, and if you’re planning to be travelling for several months, you will need at least a year. Next, make sure that you obtain the correct visas for the countries you intend to travel to. If you’re planning on visiting a country, leaving it and then re-entering, ensure that you request a multiple-entry visa.

At the same time, you’ll need to find out whether you need to receive any injections or medication before embarking on your trip – for instance, travellers in India will most likely need to ingest anti-malarial tablets at regular intervals. You should also be sure you opt for specialist long stay travel insurance, so you can reclaim the costs of any medical support you might need, as well as any belongings you should happen to lose.

Before you leave, it’s a good idea to give your house keys to a neighbour or family member, so they can check up on your home at regular intervals. After all, there would be few things worse than enjoying a tranquil extended holiday and returning to the UK to find someone has broken into your home.
