Kuoni Scores A Retailing Hat Trick With Three New Luxury Travel Stores

Kuoni, the luxury travel operator with over 100 years’ experience of the travel market, has scored its first retailing hat trick this month. The holiday operator has opened three brand new chic travel stores in major retailing heartlands, Bluewater, the centre: mk and Penn Street, Bristol, creating no fewer than 20 new jobs in the travel sector.

Kuoni Scores A Retailing Hat Trick With Three New Luxury Travel Stores

The new Kuoni stores collectively cover 3,400 sq. ft. of prime site retail estate, with access to the 97 million shoppers who visit the three shopping heartlands in Kent, Buckinghamshire and Avon.

The expansion for Kuoni doesn’t stop with the three new stores this month. Indeed, Kuoni has a robust strategy for retail growth, with plans for an additional five new stores to open and be fully operational by April 2010, bringing the Kuoni retail estate to 11 in total.

Kuoni Distribution Director, Derek Jones, commented, “Booking a holiday regardless of location or duration creates a shopping sensation that can’t be put in a carrier bag. Booking a holiday is a talking point to be shared with family, friends and work colleagues. I challenge anyone to confess they don’t love talking about their holiday plans when they have booked a trip; a holiday getaway creates excitement, expectation and anticipation beyond any other retail experience.”

The man behind the Kuoni retail revolution, Derek Jones, is no newcomer to the travel market. He is a well-known and highly respected member of the travel profession, with over twenty years in the industry. Jones joined Kuoni in March this year with the remit to put Kuoni firmly on the high street. With just six months in the job, Jones is fulfilling the brief and has opened three travel stores offering luxury holidays, in sites which would be considered enviable by any retailing standards.

“We want customers to feel they can pop-in anytime to a Kuoni store, we want our staff and customers to know each other personally so that our team understand the holiday dreams and inspirations of their clients” said Jones. He continued, “With Kuoni offering 18 brochures and selected holidays f r o m other luxury travel brands such as Carrier, Kirker and CV Travel there really is a holiday for everyone at a Kuoni store.”

Brits Say ‘Yes Please’ to Big Freeze Reports Skyscanner

Despite frozen pipes, blocked roads and cancelled flights, it seems that most Brits enjoyed the recent ‘Big Freeze’ which saw the entire UK snowbound.

In a poll run by leading cheap flights search site Skyscanner, 64% of people voted that the Big Freeze was a good thing. With more cold, snowy weather forecast for the end of the week, it’s perhaps just as well.

Only 34% voted that it was bad, due to it being ‘cold, miserable and inconvenient’. (2% gave other answers).

Scotland, which is home to Skyscanner, saw some of the heaviest snow with temperatures falling as low as -22C in some parts of the Highlands. But the white weather has given a massive boost to the nation’s five ski areas, with visitor numbers up substantially on last year. The rest of the UK also received substantial snowfall leading to days of missed work and school closures, but plenty of snow fun at the same time, as people took to the parks and streets with skis and sledges.

“Although the Big Freeze did cause inconvenience for a lot of people, it seems that cold, crisp and snowy weather is still more appealing than a grey, wet winter to the majority of people. There is something magical about snow which can transform even the most uninspiring landscapes into a winter wonderland. This is what winter should be like.” said Sam Baldwin, Skyscanner travel editor.

Unfortunately for snow lovers, it’s unlikely that cold snowy winters will become the norm for the UK. So the UK’s snow seekers may have to splash out on flights to New York or other winter wonderland destinations to experience another winter like this one. The Met Office report that winters this cold are a once in thirty year occurrence, so it’s likely that for the next couple of decades, British winters will be grey, rather than white.

Travel Search Site Skyscanner Has Seen A Huge Rise In Flight Searches To Vancouver In The Run Up To This Year’s Games

With the Vancouver Winter Olympic and Paralympic Games coming up in February (12th-28th 2010), cheap flights search engine Skyscanner reports a 71% increase in flight searches to Vancouver compared to this time last year.

Vancouver itself is a ski city, with three ski areas within the city limits: Grouse, Seymour and Cypress Mountains. Those looking for more can make the two hour journey to Whistler Blackcomb, which is consistently rated as one of the best ski resorts in the world. With over 3000 acres of terrain, and an average snowfall of over 10m per year, Whistler is a very worthy host.

Hosting the Olympics is a big boost to any city; investment in new infrastructure, lift systems and hotels, plus global publicity means that host cities can expect to remain high on skiers’ lists for a long time, as the Olympic legacy lasts for many years.

The Winter Olympics will next be seen in Sochi, Russia; which remains fairly uncharted territory for the average non-Russian skier, but Sochi’s hosting of the Winter Olympics in 2014 will change all of that.

Skyscanner Travel Editor, Scot Carlson adds: “The Olympics are turning out to be quite a popular destination for our site users. This time of year our most-popular searches tend to be vacation destinations, especially flights to Florida, or more specifically, flights to Orlando. I think that this will be a real boost to Vancouver’s economy, especially as we come out of this global recession.”

Searches for flights to the Canadian city in February were particularly elevated compared to February 2009, with an increase of 81% in total.

Skyscanner Debunks the Myth of Air France and Airline Fat Tax

Erroneous reports in the British tabloid media this week stated that French flag carrier, Air France, will force overweight flyers to pay for two seats, or they will be prevented from boarding for ‘safety reasons’.

Skyscanner Debunks the Myth of Air France and Airline Fat Tax

However, Air France has officially denied the accusation, stating on their website that ‘Air France has no intention of making heavier passengers pay for a second seat.’

Since 2005, Air France has been offering heavier passengers the possibility of purchasing a second seat at a 25% discount, to enhance their own comfort and safety.

The only recent change to Air France’s policy on overweight passengers is to refund passengers the cost of the second seat, if the cabin is not fully booked.

The possibility of a “Fat Tax” for airline passengers is a frequently debated issue, with many flyers feeling that very overweight passengers should pay for an extra seat, if they are invading the space of neighbouring travellers.

Ryanair has previously flirted with the idea following a survey that revealed one third of their passengers were in favour of such a move. However, despite the budget airline regularly introducing new routes and additional cheap flights this policy has not yet come into fruition.

Barry Smith, Skyscanner co-founder and director commented:

“Any ruling that alienates obese passengers is likely to deter them from booking with that airline. On the flip side, some airlines may start specifically targeting the overweight sector, by offering wider – but probably more expensive – seating options.”

Though Americans are typically perceived to be the world’s most overweight people, according to the World Health Organisation, it is in fact Nauru, the world’s smallest island nation that bears this unwanted title, with 94.5% of the population classified as overweight.

The UK ranks as the 28th fattest country in the world with 63.8% of the population classified as overweight.

Ironically, if Air France were to ever bring in such a rule, it would be unlikely to affect French travellers as much as other nations; France ranks 128th in the ‘fat index’ with ‘only’ 40.1% of the population overweight. So flyers on flights to Paris needn’t worry about the French passengers invading their space.

We have doubled the number of specially contracted Valentine’s packages especially around those dinner inclusive deals at some of the top destinations in the UK.”

A Recent Poll By Cheap Flights Search Engine Skyscanner Reveals That 66% Of Travellers Are In Favor Of Airport Body Scanners

Two thirds of travellers are in favor of plans to install body scanners in airports, according to the latest poll on the travel search site Skyscanner.

The cheap flights search engine found that 66% voted that airport scanners were a good idea as they would speed up security checks and improve security, while 30% said that they disapproved, largely on health and privacy grounds. (4% gave other answers).

Over 400 people voted in the poll, and the results clearly show that most travellers were in favor of the scanners.

Barry Smith, co-founder and business director of Skyscanner, a leading flight comparison engine that also supplies long haul cheap flights to Orlando, which could soon be affected, commented:

“As long as the machines are safe and any potential privacy issues can be solved, travellers are in favour of anything which will make flying safer and security checks faster. If it saves me from having to take my shoes off, empty my pockets and remove my belt, I’m all for them.”

The US currently has 19 units in various airports; the Transportation Security Administration (TSA) plans to add 150 more, focusing on major terminals and popular routes, like flights to New York. The Skyscanner poll did reveal that some travellers had concerns over the safety of the scanning machines, specifically the health issues of being x-rayed, however, the TSA say the technology is harmless, and that the amount of
radiation produced is minimal, equating to what a person would naturally receive in just two minutes of flying on an airplane.

Other respondents believed that the scanners would not increase passenger safety; Skyscanner user Vasco Sotomaior left a message on Skyscanner’s Facebook page explaining his reasons for being against the scanners:

“There’s no use for it. The threat exists, but it is so little that it doesn’t justify it. The current measures are more than enough”.

Trials with the body scanners are already taking place in some airports and train stations across Europe as well, so passengers flying to and from the UK and EU, for example on flights to London, could experience this new security measure soon. The technology blurs facial details ensuring that passengers cannot be recognised and images are viewed by staff in walled-off rooms where they cannot see travellers who are being checked.

Hotels.com Reports Irish Increasingly Seeking The Sun In Winter

Hotels.com, the world’s leading accommodation booking website, has revealed an increase in searches for winter sun holiday destinations among Irish travellers in the first two weeks of January this year when compared with the same period in 2009.

The increased searches for winter sun destinations on Hotels.com indicate that the Irish are looking to escape to warmer climes to get them through what has so far been a cold and wet start to the year.

Of the most popular destinations for travel searches, Miami Beach in Florida showed the biggest increase year-on-year, up by 89 per cent for the first two weeks of January 2010 when compared to the same period in 2009.

Searches for hotels in Gran Canaria rose by 50 per cent when compared with the 2009 figures, whilst searches for Hurghada in Egypt; Bali in Indonesia and Phuket in Thailand each increased by 46 per cent, 30 per cent and 27 per cent respectively.

Possible reasons for the trend could be attributed to the fact that Ireland has experienced such unsettled weather conditions this winter and that hotel prices continue to fall worldwide, offering better affordability for all travellers.

Alison Couper, director of communications for Hotels.com commented;

“The search results indicate that the Irish are seriously seeking some sun this winter and taking advantage of the excellent hotel room deals available right now.”

Premier Inn Rolls Out Plans For New Green Hotel

Whitbread, the UK’s leading hotel and restaurant group, has confirmed details of its plans for a second green hotel and its first low-carbon restaurant.

The Burgess Hill Premier Inn, in West Sussex, represents the latest evolution in environmentally-friendly budget hotels. It follows Whitbread’s pioneering green hotel pilot in Tamworth, Staffordshire – the UK’s first green budget hotel which opened its doors to guests in December 2008.

The 60-bedroom Premier Inn at Burgess Hill, due to open in Autumn 2010, will adopt the best-performing green technologies trialled in Tamworth to deliver 70% carbon and 60% water savings.

Adjacent to the hotel, Whitbread will develop its first low-carbon restaurant – a 220-cover Beefeater open grill restaurant.

The investment forms part of Whitbread’s corporate sustainability programme ‘Good Together’, which was launched in December 2009 along with a pledge to reduce carbon emissions by 26% by 2020.

The Burgess Hill development will include:
– Ground-source heat pumps using the earth’s natural energy to provide heating and cooling cool as well as hot water
– Rainwater harvesting and grey water recycling providing 100% of the hotel’s toilet water use and saving 20% of the hotel’s entire water use
– High-efficiency thermal insulation
– Low-flow showerheads delivering the feel and effect of a powerful shower without the associated water loss
– Heat-recovery shower systems capturing and reusing energy used by the boilers
– Automated light controls with intelligent sensors turning lights off when not in use
– Sun pipes reducing the need for artificial lighting by increasing natural light

Both the Premier Inn hotel and Beefeater restaurant at Burgess Hill will be built using timber frame construction methods from sustainably sourced wood. Timber frame has the lowest carbon content of any commercially-available building material and its flexible design allows for high levels of insulation to achieve maximum energy efficiency.

Alan Parker, CEO of Whitbread, said: “Burgess Hill’s clever combination of high-tech environmental features and advanced construction methods will allow us to achieve truly impressive results in terms of cutting carbon and conserving water. The hotel will include many of the best performing technologies pioneered at our first green hotel in Tamworth.

“Our low-carbon Beefeater restaurant at Burgess Hill is another first for Whitbread and brings us another step closer to achieving a 26% reduction in carbon emissions by 2020.”

This announcement coincides with the start of a special Good Together Week, bringing Whitbread people together for the first time to focus on how everyone can be involved to make a difference. Involving customers will also become a core component of the Good Together strategy with Whitbread aiming to help its guests play an active part in achieving sustainability targets.
