London Readying for Olympic Opening Ceremony

The new Olympic Stadium in London’s Olympic Park will be the venue for the opening ceremony of the 2012 Olympic Games. It is estimated that around one billion people worldwide will be watching the London Olympics open in style on 27th July.

The London Organising Committee of the Olympic Games (LOCOG) have employed the services of Danny Boyle, the man behind Trainspotting and Slumdog Millionaire, to come up with something to rival the epic opening ceremony at the 2008 Games in Beijing. Boyle has been given £81m to work with, and promises a ‘thrilling, enthralling, captivating evening’.

London will show off some of the best aspects of British life in the ceremony, and will doubtless draw on much of the imagery associated with Isles, from red double-decker buses and umbrellas, to the royal family itself. And rock royalty Paul McCartney and Ringo Starr – the only surviving Beatles – are even rumoured to be putting in an appearance together.

Alongside the theatrics will be the usual business: receiving the Queen, the parade of nations, speeches from the LOCOG, the Olympic anthem, the oaths, the arrival of the torch, and the lighting of the Olympic Torch. The entire event will run from 7.30-10.30.

Visitors to the capital for the London Olympics will be pleased to discover that affordable accommodation close to the Olympic Stadium is still available courtesy of LondonTown.com. Visitors to the website will find a wide selection of discounts on hotel rooms in the area.

Among the deals on offer, Town Hall Hotel & Apartments in Bethnal Green – just a couple of miles from the Olympic Stadium – are offering a 62% discount on their standard nightly rate, bringing the cost of a stay down from £528 to £203. The hotel gets a 95% approval rating from LondonTown.com users.

The Hilton London Docklands Riverside Hotel in Rotherhithe is less than two miles from the London Olympics opening ceremony. They are offering a discount of 55% on the 27 July, bringing the cost of a double room down to £224 per night. For both featured hotels, and for more information on the 2012 London Olympics, visit LondonTown.com.

Brits Miss Their Pets More Than Family Members When On Holiday

Online pet retailer, Bonlays has recently seen a surge in sales for their Sherpa products. This has been connected to a recent survey conducted by travelsupermarket.com, which discovered that two in five of us Brits take our pets on holiday with us. Furthermore, the survey of 2,010 pet owners highlighted that 40% regularly check up on their pets when away.

Talking about the results of the survey, Travel Supermarket’s Bob Atkinson told the Press Association: “We all know that Brits love their pets and this research has found that many pet-owners are happy to admit we actually miss our furry friends more than we miss immediate family and friends when we are away.”

Other results the survey showed:
• 13% would rather go on holiday with their pet than their partner
• 10% would actually prefer to go on holiday with their pet rather than their children
• 47% miss their pet(s) more than family members when on holiday

Due to the popular demand of Sherpa designer pet carriers, Bonlays have extended their selection to include the Sherpa Pop Tote Dog Carrier. In the retailers collection of Sherpa products, Bonlays have seen a growing trend for the original deluxe pet carrier, which can suggest that more pet owners are looking for luxury items when transporting their pets.

Rob Doole, Managing Director of Bonlays said: “Sherpa, who work closely with airlines, were the first soft-sided pet carrier to be endorsed by major airlines such as American Airlines and Delta and continue to prevail as the leading source for pets on the go.

“With people wishing to go abroad with their pets over the summer season, we have experienced a great deal of interest in our Sherpa products. Due to the popular demand we have introduced a new product that we hope will be equally as popular with pet owners.”

Bonlays ethos is to care for pets as an important member of the family, ensuring they are always well feed, immaculately groomed and at the height of fashion. Through the popularity of the Sherpa collection, it can be said that this philosophy is shared as many pet owners are looking for luxurious products that will keep their pets in comfort and style.

Bonlays is one of the UK’s leading online pet shops that offers owners a selection of luxury products and designer accessories. Included in the store’s extensive range of quality dog and cat products is the Sherpa pet carrier range, which has proved to be a popular choice among travelling pet owners.

Kuoni Enters Scottish Market

Kuoni, the award-winning luxury holiday provider, is delighted to be marketing Kuoni within Barrhead Travel retail outlets in Scotland. The company has decided to feature a dedicated Kuoni area in four of Barrhead Travel’s existing offices, Oswald Street Superstore in Glasgow, East Kilbride, Cumbernauld and Aberdeen with more planned throughout Barrhead Travel’s 36 office estate.

This is Kuoni’s first foray into Scotland with a physical presence unlike England where they have 21 shops of their own and will launch in-store concessions in selected John Lewis outlets this autumn. The decision to partner with Barrhead was made due to Barrhead Travel having already demonstrated that they are an excellent distribution channel for Kuoni products.

Amanda Darrington, Kuoni UK National Sales Manager commented: “We are delighted to be partnering Barrhead Travel in Scotland in four of their stores whom we have been working with for many years. We admire Barrhead’s innovative approach and look forward to working more closely with them as our Specialist Elite Agent in Scotland.”

Barrhead will also be tailoring holidays to suit the customer’s personal wishes using Kuoni ground arrangements incorporating activity such as cruising. Kuoni is the UK’s leading provider of luxury travel and has been creating holidays with a spirit of adventure for 106 years and today their knowledge and expertise spans an amazing 88 countries.

Barrhead Travel chairman Bill Munro said: “I am delighted to be able to welcome Kuoni to our stores in Scotland. We have had an excellent relationship with Kuoni in the past and we really think the decision they have made to position themselves in our stores is the right one. I believe it will really enhance our offering to the travelling public as Kuoni is such an exclusive brand which is not sold through all agents in Scotland, and it really demonstrates the commitment to the joint branding of Kuoni and Barrhead.”

Barrhead Travel already specialises in so many areas of the travel industry and by employing over 600 staff many of whom are specialists in particular destinations, Bill Munro believes this could usher in a new kind of bespoke holiday available to the public who are becoming travel savvy and looking for something new and different, such as a Maldives honeymoon or safari holidays.

“We are known for being able to offer our customers the best holidays at the best value, especially with this luxury brand in partnership. It will allow us not only to sell brochured Kuoni holidays but also tailor-make holidays for customers with Kuoni ground arrangements. That way we can offer customers great value while retaining the level of quality that customers booking holidays of this calibre expect.”

British Airways Customers Vote The Caribbean As Top Summer Holiday Destination

British Airways has revealed that, according to its recent poll, the Caribbean tops the list of destinations where the public would most like to spend their summer holiday.

Caribbean holidays have proved popular, followed closely by sunny South Africa and Florida. The results may not come as much of a surprise, as the British summer continues to disappoint with long spells of cold and wet weather.

British Airways has made it even easier for customers to get away to several Caribbean destinations as well as family favourite, Florida, with extra flights from Gatwick for the summer. There are now three extra flights to Orlando, increasing to 10 flights a week in total. Flights to Barbados, St Lucia and Antigua are now available daily, and there is an extra flight a week to Kingston in Jamaica, increasing from two to three a week.

Followers of the airline on Facebook listed Florida, London and holidays in the Maldives in the top 5 after the Caribbean and South Africa.

Many respondents also chose ‘a relaxing beach vacation’ for their favourite type of holiday this summer over ‘romantic city-breaks’, ‘fun-filled family getaways’ and ‘an all-action adventure trip’.

Claire Bentley, British Airways Holidays Managing Director, said: “The thought of relaxing on a stunning beach, in the warm and friendly Caribbean is a real draw as the summer weather continues to be a bit of a let down. Equally, South Africa is a real dream destination with Cape Town, Table Mountain and the Garden route all top attractions, while Florida is proving as popular as ever as an all-round destination with fantastic beaches, great attractions and weather.

“We’ve had a great response to our Facebook poll which just shows how important holidays are to people.”
