Jumeirah at Etihad Towers announces opening of ‘Tori No Su’ Japanese Restaurant

Jumeirah at Etihad Towers, a member of the global luxury hotel group Jumeirah, officially opened Abu Dhabi’s and the hotel’s latest gourmet venue: Tori No Su, a sleek Japanese destination of style and taste offering traditional Japanese cuisine along with contemporary creations based on classic elements by Chef Ando. Combining an authentic modern Japanese ambience with superb dining and lively urban interaction, Tori No Su features live Teppanyaki and Robatayaki counters, a Sushi bar, a beverage bar as well general seating areas.

A native of Japan, Chef Ando applies decades of mastery and skill as a kaiseki-trained chef, and like a traditional Japanese poem, at all times pays homage to the season, ensuring freshness and connectedness to what is served. The cuisine served within each corner of the restaurant has been specially designed in consideration of its own unique environment so that the overall dining experience can be enhanced, a philosophy reflected through the “hito kuchi” or “bite-sized” gourmet elements offered at the bar, through to the skewered culinary creations at the Robatayaki counter, or more intricate creations served at regular table dining areas. The freshest of the day’s catch is served either as sashimi or sushi depending on personal preference, and in traditional Japanese style, guests could try not looking at the menu and request an “omakase” course whereby Chef Ando and his team will provide a line of dishes inspired by the moment. Here, at the Abu Dhabi hotel, the true sense of Japanese culinary skill and hospitality is experienced.

A contemporary reflection of modern Japan, Tori No Su, meaning “bird’s nest” in Japanese, is located opposite the Lobby’s main entrance and is contemporary in design but with a heart that reflects a strong connection to its cultural, homely traditions. The importance of freshness is immediately recognised with the restaurant’s living grass walls, and the soul of modern Japanese tradition comes clearly through Restaurant Manager Hosoda-san and his team’s deep desire to impart not only a dining experience to be remembered, but also one that helps provide a little light and illumination on Japanese culture, cuisine and service. The perfect scene for casual drinks after work amongst an eclectic crowd, Tori No Su mixes style with taste, infusing traditional Japanese beverages with modern accents. Not to be missed is the house signature mocktail known as ‘Tei-en’ or ‘Japanese Garden’ which is a delicious mix of fresh kiwi, cucumber and apple juice garnished with a traditional Shis? leaf.

Located on Podium Level 3, opposite the hotel’s main lobby entrance and with its own private outdoor entrance, Tori No Su is open for lunch from 12:00 – 15:30 and for dinner from 19:00 – 23:30.

Jumeirah Hotels & Resorts and its global brand ambassador, Rory McIlroy, joined forces to support a local community initiative in New York. Fresh from his second Major victory, Rory got back to basics with a junior golf clinic at the City Parks Foundation’s Junior Golf Center in Brooklyn.

The day was organised by City Parks, a New York City organisation, and Rory’s principal sponsor, global luxury hospitality company Jumeirah Group.

During the clinic, 50 junior golfers from the City Parks golf centre, aged 10 to 17, got the opportunity of a lifetime to receive coaching from the current world number one golfer. The young golfers then rotated through driving, putting and chipping stations while receiving tips and techniques for improving their game.

“I spent my day with Jumeirah in one of my favorite cities, New York,” said Rory McIlroy at the end of the clinic. “It was great to see so many kids enjoy the game of golf and for me to be able to help them in some way.”

Jumeirah Group has sponsored Rory McIlroy from the very first year he turned professional in 2007. Spotting his prodigious talent early on, Jumeirah invested in the young golfer’s career and has followed it with great passion ever since. After winning the PGA Championship in the US with a record eight strokes, Rory recently reclaimed the top spot as world’s number one golfer.

It’s a highly anticipated production. The all-male cast includes actor Mark Rylance, who has been wowing London and New York critics and audiences in ‘Jerusalem’ recently. The 27th Annual Ohlone Day Takes Families Back in Time to the California of More Than a Thousand Years Ago

At Henry Cowell Redwoods State Park on Saturday, September 8 from 10:00am to 4:00pm, Ohlone cultural artisans will share traditional basketry, songs and musical instruments, stories, dances, tools, language, and history.

During this family friendly event, visitors can throw an atlatl, play Ohlone games and find out how rocks cook meals and bay trees cure headaches. One of the highlights this year is a celebration of the ancient art of Ohlone basketry. Accomplished Indian basket weavers will teach about the important role Ohlone basket weaving has played in this culture’s past, the native plants and animal materials used in their construction, and how these natural materials are gathered and prepared for weaving.

“Before the Spanish arrived in northern California in the eighteenth century, the native tribes now called Ohlone resided from the northern tip of the San Francisco Peninsula down to Big Sur in the south, and from the Pacific Ocean in the west to the Diablo Range in the east.” said Brenda Holmes, Executive Director, Mountain Parks Foundation. “We are so pleased that the descendants of the Ohlone share their culture on this special day each year.”

The Ohlone thrived for hundreds of years by hunting, fishing, and gathering in this abundant region filled with elk, pronghorn (similar to an antelope), and deer as well as salmon, perch, and stickleback. They also gathered acorns, nuts, and berries. The typical dwelling was a dome-shaped house of woven or bundled mats of tules (grass like plants) or redwood bark where available.

The setting for Ohlone Day is the spectacular Henry Cowell Redwoods State Park, where visitors can enjoy the Redwood Grove featuring 1,400-1,800 year old trees where the tallest tree is 285 feet tall, and close to 16 feet wide.

All activities are free with a cost for parking within the park of $10. The main entrance to Henry Cowell Redwoods State Park is located off of Highway 9 in Felton at 101 Big Trees Park Road.  Sponsors include Mountain Parks Foundation, the Cultural Council of Santa Cruz County, Valley Women’s Club, and California State Parks. More information can be found at www.mountainparks.org or by calling ( 831 ) 335- 7077 or (831) 335-3174.

Juliette Binoche Barbican Bound for ‘Mademoiselle Julie’

This autumn, the Barbican Theatre presents a new production of Mademoiselle Julie by August Strindberg, the playwright widely regarded as the father of modern Swedish literature.

The show – which runs from September 20-29 – will star French actress Juliette Binoche in the title role. It tells the tale of a ‘deadly duel’ between a servant and the titular socialite, who become embroiled in a relationship which tests the boundaries of gender and class to the limit.

The play caused quite a scandal on its release in 1888, with its combination of convention-breaking and classical tragedy. Here, director Frederic Fisbach presents his intimate production in French, with English surtitles. The performances are as follows:

20 & 21 Sep 7pm
22 – 28 Sep 7.45pm
29 Sep 5pm
No performance on 23 Sep

The 24 Sep show will feature a post-show discussion between the director and Dr. Clare Finburgh, the Senior Lecturer in Modern Drama at the University of Essex. Anyone with a ticket for that date will automatically gain entry to the talk.

Ticket prices range from £16-£65, and are available via LondonTown.com. The website has also announced details of special discounts on hotel rooms, so theatre-goers looking for a cheap London hotel near the Barbican should visit their site.

We appreciate the importance of air links to London and are pleased to announce that less than two months after taking over this route, we are now able to respond to customer demand and increase capacity.

“Our improved schedule also sees us adding a new early morning departure time from Dublin which will mean that passengers will be able to extend their working day should they need to.

“In addition, it offers both business and leisure passengers greater choice in terms of connections to our extensive global network at London Heathrow bringing destinations on the world map closer to Ireland, benefitting Irish businesses, tourism and Ireland as a whole.”

Dublin Airport Authority’s Director of Strategy Vincent Harrison welcomed British Airways decision to double frequency on its Heathrow service, saying it underscored the importance of the Dublin-London route.

“We have worked closely with British Airways since the bmi takeover and are delighted that the airline has decided to significantly increase its services on the Dublin-London Heathrow route. This is excellent news for business and leisure travellers, as British Airways doubling of its existing Heathrow service will offer additional choice and flexibility for passengers. Dublin-London is Europe’s busiest international city pair with 3.7 million passengers travelling by air between the two capitals last year.”

The route will be operated by a 150-seater A319 aircraft offering the choice of both Club Europe and Club Traveller cabins and passengers can enjoy a full onboard experience with complimentary food and drinks.

British Airways offers city breaks in Dublin and a variety of hotels to suit all budgets, right in the thick of the action.

British Airways offers all-inclusive fares which include a generous 23kg baggage allowance, free online check-in and seat selection 24 hours prior to departure.

Flights to Dublin are now available to book on ba.com.

Tate Britain Presents ‘Revolutionary’ Pre-Raphaelites

Between September 12th and January 13th, the Tate Britain is taking on the Pre-Raphaelite movement of the 19 th Century.

Known as the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood (PRB), and led by Dante Gabriel Rossetti, William Hunt and John Everett Millais, it is widely regarded as Britain’s first modern art movement. The Tate is bringing together more than 150 works, including sculpture, painting and photography.

The PRB was marked out by a sense of rebellion against the moralizing of Victorian society, whilst deploying the same scientific precision and grandiose flourishes associated with the era. Taking their cue from Renaissance artists, the PRB developed their work into what can only be described as avant-garde, boldly doing away with the orthodoxy of the times and establishing an entirely new style.

The secretive PRB was widely regarded as group of cultural rebels who shunned the establishment, favouring nature, realism, love and death over the more conventional, buttoned-up tastes of the Royal Academy.

Alongside the more famous works, the exhibition is dusting off some rarely seen masterpieces, including Millais’s first attempt at the plein air style, Ferdinand Lured by Ariel. The exhibition aims to put the Pre-Raphaelites into a political context, so that viewers can appreciate just how revolutionary a movement it was.

Tickets for the exhibition cost £14. It runs seven days a week, from 10am to 5pm. To aid travelling art fans with their costs, website LondonTown.com is offering a number of discounts on hotels in London close to the Tate.

Among the deals on offer, the Holiday Inn Express at London-Victoria (ten minutes walk from the Tate) is giving LondonTown users a 70% discount on double rooms. The discount brings the cost of a night’s stay down to just £89.

Equally as close is the Grange Rochester Hotel London on Vincent Square. They’re also offering a 70% discount, bringing the price of a double room down to £85 per night. Both featured discounts are only available through LondonTown.com. Visit the site for more information on Pre-Raphaelites: Victorian Avant-Garde, and to view more discounted hotels in London.

Chelsea Antiques Fair Returns in September

Britain’s leading specialists and dealers will come together this September to present more than £5 million worth of fine art and antiques at the Chelsea Antiques Fair. Some thirty-six dealers will participate, offering a huge selection of exhibits, ranging in price from less than £100 up to over £20,000. Entry to the fair is just £5.

Since the demise of the Grosvenor House Antiques Fair, this ‘boutique fair’ is the UK’s longest running antiques event. Starting on 19 th September and running until the 23rd, this year’s event is expecting to outdo previous years in terms of breadth, quality and authenticity.

Specialist displays include town and country furniture, all manner of jewellery, ceramics, watercolour and oil paintings, prints, handmade glass, Persian rugs, Art Deco mirrors and rare antiquities. Objects date largely from the 19 th and 20 th Centuries, although the eagle-eyed will spot plenty of older pieces.

The fair draws the usual crowd of West End collectors, many of whom have been regular attendees since the first fair in 1950. The budget range suits the more casual collector, and there is usually an array of well-known faces stopping by to bargain hunt. Previous years have been attended by world ambassadors and leaders, as well as famous names including Michael Winner, Diana Rigg, Michael Portillo, Charlie Watts and Margaret Thatcher. The fair regularly attracts antique lovers from Japan, Argentina, Italy, Russia and Germany.

The Chelsea Antiques Fair takes place in the appropriate opulence of Chelsea Town Hall, on the Kings Road, famed for its marble columns, chandeliers and coveted works of art. LondonTown.com – the capital’s premier booking and information site – has announced details of discounted rates on hotels in London, close to the Kings Road.

This part of London is not renowned for its cheap hotels, but the discounts available bring some of the West End’s finest hotels down to an affordable price, such as the Kensington Hotel London in Queen’s Gate, which is offering a 72% discount on their usual rate. The discount brings a night’s stay down to £165. The Kensington is less than 15 minutes walk from Chelsea Town Hall.

Sydney House Chelsea is even closer, and is offering double rooms at a 20% discount – or £171 per night. Both featured hotels are only available at the reduced rate when booking through LondonTown. Visit LondonTown.com to find more hotels in London, and for further information on the Chelsea Antiques Fair.
