LondonTown.com Picks the Best Christmas Eve Events in London this Year

Christmas Eve in London is something every Brit should experience, say LondonTown.com. A spectacular assortment of events are ready and waiting to awaken the Christmas spirit in everyone and LondonTown.com has searched far and wide for its top Christmas Eve events. Here’s our fantastic five.

Midnight Mass at St. Paul’s Cathedral

What better way to celebrate Christmas than at St. Paul’s Cathedral surrounding by candlelight, the Choir of St Paul’s Cathedral and the Barbican Brass? This iconic and altogether breathtaking cathedral is the pride of London and a truly magical location to mark another Christmas.

Skate at Somerset Sun

There are fewer places more picturesque than Somerset House in winter when the giant courtyard is turned into a winter wonderland on ice. The 18 th -century building is the perfect backdrop for this seasonal activity. Celebrate finishing work early with some mulled wine, a warm mince pie and a skate around Somerset House.

Carol singing at Westminster Abbey

For families with young children who can’t quite make it to Midnight Mass Service of Lessons and Carols at 4pm at Westminster Abbey is a great alternative. Once again Christmas spirit abounds with candles and carols in a beautiful historic location.

Last minute shopping at Southbank Centre Christmas Market

It wouldn’t be Christmas without some last minute shopping, but do it in style at Southbank Centre Christmas Market. 70 wooden chalet-style stalls line the Thames between the London Eye and Waterloo Bridge selling everything from hand-made wooden toys to soaps, candles, ceramics, glass and ornaments. Refuel with tasty crepes, roasted nuts, hog roasts, sausages, mince pies, gingerbread hearts and Gluhwein (German mulled wine).

Scrooge the Musical

Charles Dickens would have been quite satisfied with Leslie Briscusse’s musical. One of the most famous Christmas stories has been adapted for the stage at the London Palladium and Christmas Eve is the perfect time to reflect on the story’s message and take a look into Christmases past, present and future.

London’s Fireworks Are the Only Way to Ring in the New Year Says LondonTown.com

The best way to celebrate the start of 2013 and the end of 2012 is on the banks of the River Thames with fireworks lighting up the London skyline says LondonTown.com. The number one Internet site for London knows a thing or two about London events, and despite the plethora of options available on the big night, the New Year’s Eve Fireworks still top the list.

Over the course of 10 minutes millions of pounds worth of colourful, spectacular show stopping fireworks will light up the sky, viewable for miles across the capital. With the London Eye as the epicentre, the jaw dropping display will be a fitting end to London’s momentous year and a great start to what promises to be a great year ahead.

Several hours before millions of people will line the banks of the Thames waiting for the action to begin with merry moods and high spirits abounding; arriving early is a must.

After the big banging light displays a warm, cosy bed will be calling and LondonTown.com suggests picking from one its many exclusively discounted central London hotels within a short walk of the London Eye.

Just across the Thames, Charing Cross – A Guoman Hotel is a stunning Grade II listed former Victorian railway station that has recently undergone a major, multi-million pound refurbishment bringing this historic gem right up to date, at least on the inside. It is minutes from the restaurants and theatres of Covent Garden and the fireworks will be audibly if not visually close. Plus, with Thames views there’s no need to even leave the hotel to view the New Year’s Eve Fireworks spectacular.

London International Mime Festival Offers New Insight into Mime

London International Mime Festival will turn traditional conceptions about mime on their head. From 10-27 January 2013 at venues across the capital, including the Barbican, Jacksons Lane , Linbury Studio Theatre at the Royal Opera House, Platform Theatre, Roundhouse, Soho Theatre and the Southbank Centre, the world’s greatest visual and mime artists will dazzle with a vast array of skills.

Drawing on physical theatre, dance, circus, puppetry and live art performances are inventive, creative and ingenious and definitely not what one would expect from mime artists. Groups and individuals will descend on the capital from around the world, each offering their own unique interpretations and perspectives on mime and visual theatre.

Highlights include Amit Drori, from Israel, who journeys to an imaginary savanna, with the audience invited to join the ride; Chinese-born puppeteer Yeung Fai retells the past half century of Chinese history as ‘Hand Stories’ and aerial specialists Ockham’s Razor are back with their second feature-length performance entitled Not Until We Are Lost.

After watching the action many will be inspired to give this form of theatre a go themselves. This is made possible at the numerous workshops, lectures and ‘meet the artist’ sessions. It’s a well-conceived, well-rounded festival that will appeal to all.

As the festival spans more than two weeks a stay in the capital is the best way to make the most of this spectacular event. LondonTown.com has a bucket load of discounts on hotels throughout London including budget-friendly three-stars and luxury five-star accommodation.

Just across the water from the Southbank Centre is Charing Cross Guoman Hotel. Although not a cheap London hotel, thanks to LondonTown.com Charing Cross, A Guoman Hotel is now considerably more affordable thanks to an exclusive discount of 37%. Per room rates at this Grade II listed former Victorian railway station now start at a much more doable £195 per night.

To really splash out and make the most of a night in the capital, LondonTown.com suggests The Savoy A Fairmont Managed Hotel. There really are few better hotels in London and this one now boasts a brand new interior thanks to one of the most ambitious restoration programmes in the UK – to the tune of £220 million – and the hotel was reopened by Prince Charles in 2010. Although the £319 per room, per night price available through London Town.com may too much for many it is 44% lower than normal, so it’s worth pushing the boat out if only for one night.

This year, LondonTown.com, the UK’s favourite internet site for London, has compiled an extra insightful guide into the city’s best New Year’s celebrations – including where’s best to catch the bombastic fireworks displays.

Packing an hour’s worth of fireworks into just ten minutes of explosive action, the fireworks are set off from the foot of the London Eye. The display is so huge that it can be seen for miles around – if you’re in the north, head to the hills of above Camden or Hampstead – or line the river.

Traditionally an extremely busy time of year, the site still has a few tricks up its sleeve when it comes to well-sourced luxury beds.

Premier Inn reveals majority of Brits suffer from sleepless nights

Premier Inn has revealed Britain is gripped by an insomnia epidemic, with a staggering 91% of people suffering from sleepless nights.

The vast majority of Brits are unable to sleep soundly through the night, with more than a third of adults (35%) saying they wake up three times or more.

Research commissioned by the UK’s best value hotel* chain Premier Inn, questioned 2,000 adults and found that Chelmsford in Essex is the worst place in Britain for a good night’s sleep.

The study** found a quarter of the nation (26%) admits that fatigue and tiredness affects their productivity, concentration and ability to do their job. With one in three people (33%) citing worrying as the biggest cause of their restlessness.

The survey, which looked into the main causes of sleeplessness, found that a quarter of adults (26%) across the country are regularly woken by a partner’s snoring.

Other causes for sleepless nights identified are pets waking their owners up in the night (8%), a bad dream (20%) and almost one in ten (9%) claiming it’s their own snoring keeping them up.

Breaking it down regionally, Coventry is home to Britain’s biggest snorers with 40% of adults woken in the night by their partner. Liverpool is the noisy neighbour hotspot with 17% complaining that rowdy residents wake them. But the sleepless capital of Britain is Chelmsford, with a staggering 96% of residents plagued by a constant lack of sleep and a third of the town (31%) saying tiredness leaves them grumpy the next day.

To give the sleep-deprived residents of Chelmsford some well-earned rest Premier Inn took over an ordinary street for one night and transformed it into ‘Good Night Sleep Street’.

Sleep aids identified in the survey, including a flock of sheep for residents to count and a night warden to keep noise levels at bay and provide warming drinks, descended upon the street to help ease residents into slumber. Their bid to get Chelmsford sleeping included a signature king size Premier Inn bed that long suffering residents could rest on and read a bedtime story.

Claire Haigh spokeswoman for Premier Inn, said: “Getting a good night’s sleep is a struggle for many across the nation, but it seems that the residents of Chelmsford were finding it particularly difficult to relax into a restful slumber.

“We hope that by bringing together the ingredients the nation told us help them to sleep well to the residents of Chelmsford that we’ve given them a good night’s sleep.”

Slava’s Snowshow Set for Winter Run in Capital

The multi-award winning theatrical spectacle ‘Slava’s Snowshow’ has been a worldwide hit, staged in more than 80 cities around the world including Paris and New York. The show has already proven itself on the UK stage, and is set to return to London in 2012 for a special Christmas run at the Royal Festival Hall.

A winning combination of clowning, pyrotechnics and breathtaking sets, the critics have called the show ‘a visual masterpiece’. ‘Slava’s Snowshow’ will run for three weeks, from December 17th until January 7th. The show was conceived by legendary Russian performance artist Slava Polunin, described The Times as ‘the greatest clown in the world’. The paper called his eponymous show ‘a theatre classic of the 20 th Century.’

The show was launched in the West with the objective of raising money for Polunin’s own Academy of Fools, a centre of arts designed to resurrect carnival culture in Russia. It went on to win numerous awards, including the Laurence Olivier Award for Best Entertainment in 1998.

‘Slava’s Snowshow’ is aimed at everyone above the age of 8, and takes audiences on a fantastical adventure through a bizarre dream-world. Its spectacular denouement is comprised of a raging blizzard that leaves the crowd knee deep in theatrical snow.

Tickets for the show range from £20-£49.50, with premium seats available for £65. Bookings are now being taken via LondonTown.com, the city’s premier website for events, information and hotels. Tradition Lives on at the Serpentine this Christmas Day

The Christmas Day dip in the icy waters of Hyde Park’s Serpentine Lake marks its 148 th anniversary this year. For the past 104 years this 100-yard race in spine-chilling waters has been named the Peter Pan Cup after J.M Barrie, Peter Pan’s creator, first presented the now highly sought after award.

Although there are few who would ever want to plunge into sub-four degrees Celsius waters, especially on Christmas Day, there are many that like to spectate and cheer on the hardy souls as they brave the often ice-covered waters. The swim begins at 9am in the beautiful surroundings on Hyde Park; it’s a truly unique and special way to kick off Christmas Day in the capital.

Christmas in London is quite magical. There are numerous events held in the run-up to and on the big day itself, from markets and carol signing to ice-skating and Santa’s grottos. A New Year’s Eve to be Proud of in Camden

New Year’s Eve can be a bit hit-and-miss in London, especially if you’re coming up to visit and aren’t expecting the massive crowds and very busy buses and tubes that the capital always throws up at the turn of the year.

However, trusty LondonTown.com has come up with its own guide to New Year’s in Londonwhich looks set to separate the wheat from the chaff when it comes to living it up and welcoming in 2013.

LondonTown.com, the UK’s favourite London website, has put together a collection of tips and ideas for NYE, NYD and other special times over the festive period. Of the collection, a few sure-fire hits – great places to go at any time of year – stand out.

One such place is Proud Camden, an art gallery-cum-club set in a restored old stables near Camden Lock Market. The setting alone is enough to guarantee an alternative experience to the wipe-clean day-glo nightclubs of central London : a 200-year old listed building, formerly horse stables, with wooden beams and wide but low rooms.

Hosting photography exhibitions as well as turning into a bit of a trendy music venue at night – with bands like The Libertines helping this place on its way to fame – it’s also a good spot to finish a night, great for dancing and meeting new people.

This NYE, those looking to make a night of it can also splash out on a double room at Camden Lock Holiday Inn for £254 for a double room on New Year’s Eve – a discount of 19% from LondonTown.com.
