Enjoy presentations from well-known civil war speakers, 7th Annual Great Lakes Civil War Forum, 1864: Hard and Total War

7th Annual Great Lakes Civil War Forum 1864: Hard and Total War. On Saturday, September 13th, from 8:30am to 4:00pm, head over to the Civil War Museum in Kenosha, WI for a day of fascinating discussions with well-known Civil War presenters.

Dr. James Cornelius of the Abraham Lincoln Presidential Library and Museum will present International Views of Lincoln in 1864. Not only did people around the world have opinions of Lincoln by 1864, but their own political and cultural activities acted upon Lincoln’s life and campaign in 1864, perhaps more so than in any other year. Dr. Cornelius will address some of the better-known aspects of the story – Maximilian’s arrival in Mexico that year and ongoing diplomacy with Great Britain – as well as some of the lesser-known ripples that reached U.S. shores: how did Denmark, the Vatican, Shakespeare, and an Italian assassin in London figure in?

Mr. Steve Acker will discuss the Life of a Late War Regiment: The 36th Wisconsin 1864-1865. As U.S. Grant’s army prepared to attack the Mule Shoe of Spotsylvania, a fresh regiment of Wisconsin soldiers, led by a veteran of the Iron Brigade, left its home state bound for Washington City and the war. In less than a month that regiment saw the elephant of combat, lost its colonel, and suffered hundreds of causalities. From the first hint of combat at North Anna to Appomattox, the 36th Wisconsin Infantry illustrates the life of a late war regiment fighting in Virginia. Using the vivid memories of veterans of the regiment as his guide, Mr. Acker’s talk follows the 36th from their early days in Camp Randall to the final muster in 1865.

Mr. Greg Biggs will talk about The Atlanta Campaign – From Dalton to Kennesaw. The campaign for Atlanta is arguably the one that won the Civil War for the Union. The campaign’s successful conclusion in September 1864 ensured the re-election of President Abraham Lincoln and proved to the Northern populace that his war was indeed being won. This was in stark contrast to the events in Virginia in the same time frame were the slaughter of Union troops continued with little to show for it. Three armies commanded by General William T. Sherman moved into north Georgia under orders to destroy the Confederate Army of Tennessee and break up Georgia’s ability to wage war. Georgia was supplying most of the food used by Robert E. Lee’s Army of Northern Virginia, many of its cannons and small arms, and all of its gunpowder which made it a major military target. Atlanta, with four major railroads, was a huge supply hub and transportation center. This program will deal with the personalities, politics, strategic planning, and the battles from Dalton through the first Kennesaw Line as well as the mistakes of both commanders.

Mr. John Lundstrom will present One Drop in a Sea of Blue: Liberators of the 9th Minnesota Infantry. One Drop in a Sea of Blue is the story of the Ninth Minnesota throughout the entire Civil War. After a humiliating defeat at Brice’s Crossroads, Mississippi, many soldiers from the 9th were held at Andersonville and other notorious Confederate prisons, where they suffered a death rate exceeding 60 percent. Yet the regiment also helped destroy the Confederate Army of Tennessee at Nashville and capture Mobile. With vital details won through assiduous research, Mr. Lundstrom uncovers the true stories of ordinary men who lived and died in extraordinary times.

The cost of the all-day event is $60, which includes lunch and admission to all exhibits at the Civil War Museum including the movie Seeing the Elephant which gives visitors a 360° view of civil war combat. The cost is only $50 if you are a member of the Friends of the Museums. Registration is required so please call (262) 653-4141. More details are available at www.TheCivilWarMuseum.org.

Shakespeare’s Globe set to premiere Holy Warriors

This summer at Shakespeare’s Globe looks set to be an exciting time for theatre lovers with four new plays debuting at the Bankside theatre. Alongside new works by esteemed playwrights Richard Bean, Howard Brenton and Simon Armitage, Holy Warriors is the latest offering from the writer of In Basildon, David Eldridge.

Premiering on July 19th at Shakespeare’s Globe, Holy Warriors promises a truly epic, millennia-spanning tale of the fight for Jerusalem, taking in a vast swathe of the historical tumult that has surrounded the Holy City. The story encompasses the Romans capturing of the city, the crusades conflict between Christian forces led by King Richard The Lionheart and Saladin, leader of the Muslims, right up to the Hamas suicide bombings of recent history.

Holy Warriors is the latest, highly anticipated play from David Eldridge, writer of the much-praised stage adaptation of Festen and In Basildon which ran at the Royal Court two years ago and was voted the number one theatre pick of 2012 by the Guardian’s writers and critics.

Tickets for Holy Warriors are available via the Shakespeare’s Globe website and cost £5 (standing) and between £15 and £42 for seats. You can find out more at LondonTown.com where you’ll also find a wide selection of discounted accommodation within easy reach of the famous theatre. If you’re on the lookout for a cheap London hotel deals are available on many of the city’s finest establishments.

The Novotel London City South on Southwark Bridge Road, just opposite St Pauls Cathedral is offering rooms from £83 per night, which is a 21% discount on the usual rate. The hotel is just three minutes from the Globe.

Just as convenient and even more generously discounted, the Ibis Styles London Southwark Rose gives guests exceptional access to the Globe, Tate Modern and Borough Market and with 27% off courtesy of LondonTown.com rooms are available from just £93.

Camden Fringe is Back, and Bigger Than Ever

For four weeks this summer, the Camden Fringe returns for its 9th successive year of comedy, theatre, poetry and dance. Across North London, more than 200 different productions will be performed at 24 venues between July 28th and August 24th.

As usual the primary draw is the stand up comedy – but the festival is also upholding it’s tradition of staging some of the more bizarre acts from around the world. In 2014, they include rapping OAPs and an eccentric take on the works of Shakespeare. If it’s funny ha-ha or just funny peculiar, it’s probably on in the borough of Camden this summer. Tickets range from £5-£12 depending on venue, which include Upstairs at the Gatehouse in Highgate Village and the Tristan Bates Theatre in Covent Garden.

Perhaps the most important venue for the Fringe is the Etcetera Theatre, where the festival began life in 2006. From humble beginnings, where performers barely outnumbered attendees, the Camden Fringe gradually picked up performers, punters and venues over the next eight years and now sits firmly in the comedy festival big leagues, attracting household names like Simon Amstell and internationally-recognized venues like the Roundhouse. Despite its success, the Camden Fringe remains devoted to new talent, and there will be no shortage of breakthrough stars of the future on show.

To help travelling comedy fans find an affordable hotel in London, the capital’s premier events and accommodation website LondonTown.com is offering discounts on a number of rooms in and around Camden. It’s the perfect solution for comedy fans on a budget.

Among the deals being offered by the site is a night’s stay at the Radisson Blu Edwardian Grafton Hotel for just £47 – an 36% discount on the usual rate. Situated on Tottenham Court Road, The Radisson is five minutes walk from Camden High Street.

Just as close is the Thistle Euston London Hotel, which is offering an 84% discount on a deluxe double room, bringing the nightly rate down to £76. Visit LondonTown.com to find more discounted London hotel rooms, and for more information on the Camden Fringe, which runs between July 30th and August 26th.

Another hotel in London participating in the offer – and located just as close to the Fringe action as The Radisson – is the Wesley on Euston Street. When booking through LondonTown.com, guests can take advantage of a 35% discount, bringing the cost of a night’s stay down to just £54.

For more information on the 2014 Camden Fringe, and to find your own hotel in London, visit LondonTown.com.

The Chap Olympiad Celebrates Its 10th Anniversary

The Chap Olympiad returns to London on the 12th July 2014, celebrating its 10th anniversary. Orchestrated by The Chap magazine, the annual event is not so much a sporting occasion, more a celebration of buffoonery and ineptitude. Tickets are on sale now and always sell out prior to the event so be sure to snap yours up now. For those also looking to book a London hotel, visit LondonTown.com where a great selection for all budgets can be found.

Taking place at Bedford Square Gardens, one of the best preserved set pieces of Georgian architecture in London, the distinguished gathering invites members of the public to take part in a number of zany showdowns such as Umbrella Jousting, using bicycles and brollies instead of horses and lances; and Tug of Hair, in which a lengthy handlebar moustache is used in place of a rope. Designed to separate the chaps from the cads, anyone can compete to win the bronze, silver and gold cravats. Guests are advised to wear elegant finery, period military wear, formal wear or dandy wear – strictly no sportswear (except cricket whites), denim or sneakers.

Further to the ‘sporting’ events, there will also be sandwiches and Pimm’s by the bucket load. Tickets are £20 for the day or £35 for the day and entry to the evening Blitz Party. For more information visit LondonTown.com.

Laugh it up in London this summer at the Balham Comedy Festival

Now in its third year, the Balham Comedy Festival has quickly established itself as one of the highlights of London’s comedy calendar. It returns to the Bedford pub in South West London this July with another stellar line-up of side splitting stand up.

The festival will run from the 11th to the 19th of July and promises to pack plenty of laughs into that week courtesy of both established stars and up-and-coming talents. Famous names include Marcus Bridgestock who will perform his Je M’accuse – I Am Marcus show, gag expert Tim Vine, Radio 4 favourite Jeremy Hardy, Richard Herring, Phil Jupitus and Reginald D. Hunter, in fact the Balham Comedy Festival boasts one of the best comedy line-ups you’ll find anywhere. Paul Daniels and the lovely Debbie McGee are even making an appearance!

And if you’re inspired by the famous faces filling the Balham Comedy Festival’s programme there will also be comedy workshops for adults and children hosted by John Moloney, Adam Bloom, and Dave Fulton. These consist of a 45-minute masterclass followed by a 30-minute break to allow the ‘students’ to prepare their own stand-up routines and then perform them, with advice and support from professional comedians.

Comedy fans visiting Balham from further afield will find a selection of conveniently located London hotel accommodation at LondonTown.com. The Holiday Inn Express Wimbledon South is just a couple of miles from The Bedford and offers extra-affordable accommodation courtesy of a 39% discount when you book through LondonTown.com, meaning rooms start at just £52. Also nearby, the Holiday Inn Express Wandsworth is even cheaper courtesy of a 21% discount.

London’s favourite Peruvian LIMA set to open second restaurant

One of the most exciting new London restaurants opening this summer is undoubtedly LIMA Floral. It’s older sister – simply called LIMA – first opened its doors back in August 2012, going on to become the first Peruvian restaurant in Europe to win a Michelin star.

The coveted star wasn’t the only accolade awarded to LIMA’s founder Virgilio Martinez in 2013. His flagship establishment Central Restaurante – located in the Peruvian capital from which the LIMA project takes its name – was featured in last year’s World’s 50 Best Restaurants.

So Martinez and his partners Gabriel and Jose Luis Gonzalez, we can safely say, have form when it comes to pleasing international diners, and their brace of London restaurants have taken their place among the city’s finest venues.

For the uninitiated, Peruvian cuisine is an exciting mix of Amazonian fish dishes, scallops and chia ceviche, served with exotic native vegetables and grains like kohlrabi and quinoa. LIMA Floral is complemented by a basement ‘piqueos bar’ which, according to Martinez, is “essentially a bar serving tapas dishes…”

The small plates available in the piqueo bar include grouper with rocoto tiger’s milk ceviche and tuna and seared aubergine tiradito. These delicacies are offset by an extravagant, extensive cocktail menu which features variations on the classic Peruvian beverage Pisco Sour.

Both restaurant and piqueo bar are designed by B3, whose other London restaurants projects include Gymkhana and Bubbledogs. Their vision is an international take on Peruvian styles, all large arched windows and cosy dens, the perfect setting for a long, lazy dinner.

LIMA Floral is located on the corner of Garrick Street and Floral Street, set in a historic former monastery (which was most recently home to The Forge restaurant). Both the piqeuos bar and the main restaurant open on July 20. London’s First Creole Bar & Kitchen Opens in Camden

Our capital is renowned for its eclectic international food scene, and London restaurants don’t come any more international than Bayou, a Creole bar and kitchen set to open in Camden on July 10.

Bayou is the brainchild of restaurateur Chris Singham – proprietor of another Camden hit dining venue, Simply Fish – and the menu promises a selection of dishes from the Deep South, and in particular the wetlands around the Gulf Coast from which it takes its name.

That means Cajun and Creole items like crayfish, jambalaya, smoked chicken wings and gumbo, as well as soul food like po’ boy sandwiches, ribs, grits and fried chicken. The drinks menu features American lagers and specialty cocktails, including a ‘Proud Mary’, a Mezcal/tomato juice/cucumber/dill concoction that takes its name from the John Fogerty song (and nods knowingly at Fogerty’s claims of being ‘born on the bayou’ despite hailing from distinctly un-swamplike Northern California).

The Bayou country that runs along the south coast of the United States from Louisiana to Florida has long been a melting pot of cultures, and the cuisine draws on the region’s French, Spanish, Italian and African heritage. Bayou is set to bring those flavours to the London restaurants scene, with a side order of live traditional jazz thrown in to the mix.

But Bayou is just one of many new London restaurants to open this summer. There’s Scarpetta and Caterina55, both Italian restaurants located in the City. The Wellcome Kitchen just opened next to its namesake collection of medical artefacts on Euston Road; it’s run by Benungo, and promises a constantly-changing menu of rustic dished – just think about going there before the museum if you don’t want to spoil your appetite. There’s Barrefina, Covent Garden’s newest tapas joint. A cache of internationally-flavoured London restaurants are opening throughout the summer, with Peruvian, Mexican and Cuban food being dished up in new venues. You can keep abreast of all the latest and greatest dining hot spots at LondonTown.com.

Huge Damien Hirst sculpture on show in London church

A new, free exhibition featuring an 8ft bronze sculpture by Damien Hirst will open this summer in the incredible surroundings of a seventeenth-century church designed by Sir Christopher Wren in the heart of the City of London. Odyssey will fill St Edmund in the City with sculptures that explore big themes of life and death, running from 27th June – 18th July 2014 at the church on Lombard Street, London. The exhibition has been devised and curated by London’s bo.lee Gallery, which, since its establishment in 2009, has developed a reputation for showing contemporary art covering complex subjects. The church is one of several Wren buildings in the City, and is only a short distance from his masterpiece, St Paul’s Cathedral. For a guide to the area’s many attractions, including London restaurants, bars, galleries, shops, cafes and cheap hotels, see LondonTown.com.

Odyssey will create a series of dramatic contrasts within the beautiful sacred surroundings of St Edmund, emphasising the light of life and darkness of death, or presenting monochrome works against beautifully detailed stained glass. Among the exhibits is Damien Hirst’s Saint Bartholomew, Exquisite Pain (2006), an eight-foot tall bronze sculpture depicting the martyred apostle with his flayed skin and instruments of torture.

Other works include Rebecca Louise Law’s The Flower Garden Display’d, a beautiful organic sculpture of 4,600 flowers (of over 40 varieties), all entwined with 8,800 metres of copper wire, and Kathy Dalwood’s Secret Society – A Last Supper, which continues her series of seemingly luxurious sculptural banquets in historic settings. A giant sculpted bronze plant by Bath-based Patrick Haines will reach upwards and fan out across St Edmund’s vaulted ceiling. Right at the very bottom of this gleaming symbol of life is a single, sculpted goldfinch, a symbol of the suffering of Jesus Chris. Tessa Farmer will create tiny sculptured creatures from insect wings, plant roots and an assortment of organic material, while Koji Shiraya’s bright white, meditative, porcelain installation is a series of sculpted 35cm ceramic balls, each illustrating the human mind. Other featured artists include Cathy Lewis and Beth Carter. For more information about the venue and other events taking place in London this summer, see LondonTown.com.

Punk lives again in London this summer

A new photographic exhibition in the centre of the City of London will open next month featuring some of the world’s greatest images of the punk rock movement. Curated by punk writer and theorist Jon Savage, the exhibition is called I Got You In My Camera: Punk 1976-1979 and will run from 2nd July to 27th July at the Olympus Rockarchive Image Space Gallery at 199 Bishopsgate. The gallery is located in the heart of the City, close to St Paul’s Cathedral, the Bank Of England and other symbols of the British establishment that the punk movement so disliked. For more on the many attractions in this area of London, see LondonTown.com, where you will also find information about London hotels, shops and restaurants, as well as events taking place throughout the summer in all parts of the capital.

The punk exhibition has been pulled together under the guidance of Savage, who has secured work from some of the greatest punk photographers of the London scene – featuring the Sex Pistols, Clash, Damned and Buzzcocks – but also in New York, where the likes of the Ramones, Patti Smith, Television and Talking Heads performed. Photographers involved include the likes of Sheila Rock, Roberta Bayley, Richard Mann, Adrian Boot, Bob Gruen, Ray Stevenson  and  Jill Furmanovsky, many of whom will be exhibiting together for the first time, providing rich visual material of an iconic, image-led season in never-before-seen photographs. Some of the musicians that will be featured in the exhibition include Johnny Rotten, Joe Strummer, Debbie Harry, Patti Smith and Sid Vicious.

The exhibition will focus on the core years of punk, from 1976 when the scenes in both New York and London began to take off, to 1979, when Sid Vicious died of a heroin overdose at the Chelsea Hotel in New York City. There will be a series of punk-themed evenings taking place throughout the exhibition. For more information, see LondonTown.com.
