LondonTown.com: Prize-winning artist takes over major London gallery this autumn

One of Britain’s most popular artists, the Turner Prize-winning Grayson Perry, will present a new exhibition at the National Portrait Gallery called Who Are You? This exhibition features 14 portraits of individuals, families and groups that will be placed within the gallery’s nineteenth and twentieth-century displays, and include a self-portrait and a major new tapestry. The exhibition runs from 25th October 2014 to 15th March 2015, and is sure to be one of the key attractions to the gallery in Trafalgar Square, where it is close to cheap London hotels, shops and restaurants. For more information, see LondonTown.com.

The portraits include one of politician Chris Huhne, painted on the day of his release from prison, and it will feature alongside images of deaf parents, a Muslim convert, a couple living with Alzheimers, an X-Factor contestant and a transsexual in the display made with a variety of media by the Turner Prize-winning artist and BAFTA Award-winning broadcaster. Perry met the subjects at a moment in their lives in which they need to define who they are, and then distilled his impressions of this into a portrait. Some of the sitters have become miniatures, some large tapestries, others statues and pots.

Winner of the 2003 Turner prize, Grayson Perry is one of Britain’s best-known contemporary artists. He works with traditional media; ceramics, cast iron, bronze, printmaking and tapestry and is interested in how each historic category of object accrues over time’s intellectual and emotional baggage. His hard-hitting and exquisitely crafted works reference his own childhood and life as a transvestite while also engaging with wider social issues from class and politics to sex and religion. For more on this and other exhibitions at the National Portrait Gallery, see LondonTown.com

LondonTown.com: Enda Murphy returns with Ballyturk at the National Theatre

Ballyturk, the new play by Enda Walsh, has been the focus of considerable attention in recent months, in part because of a formidable cast that includes regular Walsh collaborator Mikel Mufi alongside Hollywood big hitters Cillian Murphy and Stephen Rea, but mostly because Enda Walsh is one of the rising stars of international theatre.

Ballyturk reunites the creative team behind Mistermen, one of Walsh’s most acclaimed productions and centres on two men – Mufi and Murphy, simply identified as One and Two – who’s lives in the imagined Irish town of Ballyturk unravel upon the arrival of a third man (Rea).

A four-year gap since Walsh’s last play, the Tony Award winning ‘Once’, means Ballyturk arrives accompanied by considerable anticipation. Few were surprised therefore when the play’s debut run at the Galway International Arts Festival swiftly sold out.

Ballyturk commences its run at the National Theatre on 11th September and shows no sign of slowing Walsh’s ascendant trajectory having already won strong reviews and enthusiastic audiences.

You can find further details about the production, including ticket prices, at LondonTown.com. The capital’s premier events and booking site is also offering exclusive discounts on a selection of nearby hotels, making the task of finding an affordable hotel in London easier than ever.

The Mondrian London Hotel is a mere 6 minute walk from the National Theatre and currently offers a 31% discount when you book through LondonTown.com. A luxury hotel situated between the Oxo Tower and Blackfriars Bridge, the discount brings the cost of a night’s stay down to £157.

The London Marriott Hotel County Hall is just as close to the National, offering 5 star luxury right at the heart of the South Bank. The hotel is currently offering double rooms at a 31% discount, bringing the nightly rate down to £158.

LondonTown.com: Four amazing homes to appear in centre of Trafalgar Square

A series of dramatic new buildings are set to appear in the centre of London’s iconic Trafalgar Square this September as part of the London Design Festival, which takes place at venues across the capital between 13th and 21st September. The London Design Festival showcases some of the most inventive ideas in design through a series of displays, talks and exhibitions that are located throughout the city. The Trafalgar Square project features four acclaimed designers who have created their own interpretation of home. Trafalgar Square is right in the centre of London, close to all the major attractions, shops, restaurants and best London hotels. For more information on the area, see LondonTown.com.

Designers involved in the Trafalgar Square project include Jasper Morrison, Patternity, Raw Edges and Studiolise. Their four ‘homes’ will seem similar in construction from the outside though each will have its own individual exterior identity, hinting at the creative interiors. Jasper Morrison will create an amusing home based on a pigeon fancier’s house – based on the pigeons that are the square’s famous residents – with pigeon paraphernalia set among the minimal designs of Morrison’s furniture. The small building will be complete with external perches and roosting boxes for the birds.

The home by Raw Edges will feature movable walls that can be used to open up different interior spaces – bedroom, living room, kitchen and bathroom – as and when they are needed. Studioilse has created a space which challenges visitors to respond to the questions of what home means to them. Visitors will hear a soundtrack of background noises such as a kettle boiling, doors slamming, cutlery rattling while the walls will show film projections of household objects and rituals which take place throughout the day in every home, spanning all cultures and social spectrums. Finally, Patternity will use pattern in engaging and inspiring ways. The interior of their house will be occupied with a trio of giant kaleidoscopes which will symbolically reflect the world around us through repeated pattern. For more on this and other London Design Festival events, see LondonTown.com.

The Design Museum’s Designer In Residence 2014 exhibition will explore the theme of Disruption as the annual event enters its fourth year. Beer drinking in the UK has been in the midst of a revolution for some time now. Pubs brim with weird and wonderful concoctions, microbreweries abound and the increasingly serious business of beer drinking continues to attract more and more connoisseurs.

All of which means that this year’s Great British Beer Festival is set to be bigger and better than ever before. Indeed, this summer’s event returns to London’s Olympia Exhibition Centre on the 12th August with over 900 real ales, ciders, perries and foreign beers available to try and a massive expected attendance of 55,000 people eager to try them.

The BBC Proms has joined forces with the National Theatre for the first time (in a prom) to mark the centenary of the First World War. The War Horse Prom uses the life-size Handspring puppet company puppets which feature in the War Horse musical – the international theatre hit based on the widely acclaimed and much loved novel by Michael Morpurgo.

LondonTown.com: Free exhibition of incredible photographs opens in London this month

Some of the greatest photographs in history will be on display this month in London when the Getty Images Gallery in the West End holds its latest exhibition, titled Jewels Of The Archive. The exhibition opens on 13th June – 6th September 2014 and admission is free. The gallery is located just off Oxford Street in the centre of London and visitors to the city hoping to discover the best and latest in London hotels, bars, shops and museums should first check out LondonTown.com, London’s best website for tourist information.

The Jewels Of The Archive exhibition will feature a selection of classic images that collectively form a wider narrative on the history of photography. They are all taken from what is considered to be the most comprehensive photojournalism archive in the world, the Hulton Archive, which encompasses a huge variety of collections including seminal agencies that shaped the landscape of press photography, alongside smaller, but equally as precious, archives by pioneering photographers.

With this in mind Jewels of the Archive focuses on the collections that have given the world some of the greatest images across the gallery’s 17-year history, such as the Topical Press Agency, Picture Post and the Daily Express archives. With many of these images originally seen on the printed page, the gallery walls bring a new context to this varied assortment of news, sport and entertainment photography. Images include important subjects such as the Suffragettes as well as examples of street photography – serendipitous moments of everyday life caught on film for ever. Among the photographers featured will be legends such as Bill Brandt, Bert Hardy and Terry Fincher, and there will also be a display of ephemera that includes objects from the earliest photographic companies. For more information on the exhibition and other events taking place in London this summer, see LondonTown.com.
