When in Rome: get a taste of ancient life – in London

Those who fell in love with Mary Beard and her funny, honest portrayals of Roman life through her BBC series Meet the Romans, will be delighted by the upcoming exhibition at the British Museum.

Entitled Life and Death in Pompeii and Herculaneum, the exhibition will focus on the day to day doings of two of the Roman Empire’s most famed cities, both nestled under the awnings of the gaping volcano Mount Vesuvius.

These two very different cities were both covered – and destroyed – by the fateful eruption of Mount Vesuvius in AD 79. But thanks to this exhibition, we can get a glimpse into live under the lava.

Displaying over 250 objects, many of which have never before been seen outside Italy before, the museum conveys what everyday Roman life was like nearly 1700 years ago. Objects from Herculaneum, a small seaside town, include wooden furniture carbonized by the high temperatures of the ash and a baby’s crib that still rocks on its curved runners.

From Pompeii, the industrial hub of the region, we have a beautiful wall painting of the baker, Terentius Neo and his wife, who appear as equal partners, in business and in life. Other fascinating objects include sculpted marble reliefs, carved ivory panels and casts showing the Pompeii victims forever suspended in their last moments.

History fans looking for hotels near Kings Cross can turn to HotelMap, a useful online widget that sources great accommodation deals – on 5th April, for instance, Crowne Plaza London The City has doubles for £97 – a discount of over 70%. Or the Holiday Inn London Kings Cross also has a discount of over 50%, with doubles from £120 – and a short walk to the museum.

The Great Spitalfields Pancake Race

On February 12th, the annual pancake race will return to Dray Walk at the Old Truman Brewery, just off Brick Lane. Kicking off at 12.30 pm, the Great Spitalfields Pancake Race will feature teams of four, dressed in crazy garb and armed with frying pans and butter. Pancakes are provided.

After the heats are finished, the best teams will compete in the finals for the grand prize: an engraved frying pan. Awards are also given to the best-dressed team. Street performers and clowns wander up and down the course, and a string band will provide the score.

The Great Pancake Race dates back to the 70s, when it was originally run in Covent Garden. It transferred to Soho in the 80s, before settling on its current home in Spitalfields for the 1993 race. As well as being an eccentric day out for locals and tourists alike, the pancake race will raise money for the London Air Ambulance, both through sponsorship of participants, and donations collected on the big day. To enter a team, visitwww.alternativearts.co.uk to register.

Most of the teams entered comprise of local businesses and hardcore residents. But a significant number travel in from outside the capital, either as runners or spectators. To help visitors keep their accommodation costs down, website HotelMap.com is offering reduced rates on London hotels close to Spitalfields. A full map of the city, with London hotels and their rates clearly marked, is available at HotelMap.com.

One of the nearest London hotels participating in the offer, the Crown Plaza in Shoreditch is offering a 35% discount on the night of the 12th, immediately after the race. The discount makes the cost of a night’s stay in a double room £199.

A little further away is Hilton’s Doubletree Hotel, situated next Fenchurch Street Station. According to HotelMap, rooms are available from to £158 per night – a 69% discount on the usual rate. The discounts are not available directly through the hotel. Bookings must be made via HotelMap.com. Visit the site to browse more discounted London hotels.

BFI Birthday for Doctor Who

On February 9th, the BFI Southbank will host a matinee screening of ‘Tomb of the Cybermen’, the 1967 episode featuring second Doctor Patrick Troughton in the role. It’s the second in a monthly series of episodes leading up to the show’s 50th anniversary in November, following on from ‘An Unearthly Child’, starring William Hartnell in the title role, which was screened in January.

The 450-seat venue will be saluting a different Doctor every month between now and the end of the year, one for each of the 11 television incarnations and one film, the 1996 tv-movie starring Paul McGann. The countdown culminates on November 23rd, the 50th anniversary of the very first broadcast of the Time Lord’s debut adventure.

Of the television show, only the third episode has been announced so far. On March 10th, the BFI will show a colour-restored version ‘The Mind of Evil’, featuring Jon Pertwee as the Doctor. The remaining episodes will be announced throughout the year. Each screening will be followed by a Q & A with guests involved in the original production.

Co-curator Justin Johnson insists the series is not just a fanboy love-in. ‘ we won’t be assuming that everyone watching will know everything about the show’, says Johnson.‘We really want these events to be about introducing people to new material as much as it is about serving the interests of an audience who already knows every last frame, monster and sound effect by heart.’

The screening starts at 2.30 pm. Tickets are available via LondonTown.com. The website has also announced details of discounted London hotels close to the Southbank, allowing travelling fans to stay in the city at a reasonable cost.

Among the London hotels participating in the offer, the London Marriott County Hall Hotelis reducing the cost of deluxe double and twin rooms to £225 per night, a 33% discount on the standard rate for this luxury hotel. Situated on Westminster Bridge Road, the luxury Marriot is less than ten minutes’ walk from the BFI Southbank.

Just as close, the Savoy – a Fairmont hotel – is offering a 44% discount, bringing the cost of a night’s stay down to £319. The Savoy is located on the famous Strand. Both London hotels featured are only available at the discounted rate when booking viaLondonTown.com. British Airways offer more movie time and top TV onboard

British Airways has announced that it will become the first UK airline to provide in-flight entertainment screens from the second customers take their seats to the moment they arrive at their destination.

From December 1, British Airways customers will be able to spend even more time – up to an hour more – enjoying movies, top TV shows and a wide selection of music onboard the airline’s flights.

Frank van der Post, British Airways’ director of brands and customer experience, said: “We’re continually looking for new services and products that will make travelling with British Airways even better for our customers.

“We know how much our customers enjoy our carefully selected in-flight entertainment so we’re delighted that now they’ll be able to pack even more of the programmes and films into their long-haul flights.

“And with the Christmas break coming up, we’re sure that children flying with British Airways will love having more time to watch the great films we offer, and so will their parents.”

The extension to in-flight entertainment is part of a £5 billion investment programme by British Airways, which includes new aircraft, refurbished cabins and better lounges.

In line with other UK carriers, British Airways currently starts its in-flight entertainment system once the aircraft has taken off and following various
announcements and turns it off 15-20 minutes before the aircraft lands.

The airline was given the green light by the Civil Aviation Authority to introduce extended in-flight entertainment on its fleet of long haul aircraft.

This service will be also available on new routes the airline is launching, including London Heathrow to Seoul in South Korea which starts on Sunday, December 2, 2012. Customers looking to cross the Atlantic for a spot of Christmas shopping, or to simply enjoy holidays in New York or holidays in Boston, can now look forward to a flight filled to the brim with entertainment.
