Helen Mirren resurrects role of Queen Elizabeth

Oscar-winner Helen Mirren, one of the UK’s favourite (and most successful) actresses, returns to the London stage in one of her most lucrative and loved roles – as Queen Elizabeth II.

The Audience, opening at the Gielgud Theatre on Shaftesbury Avenue on February 15th, finds Helen treading the boards as queen Liz – over sixty years of her reign.

Peter Morgan’s plays an imaginary fly on the wall in the weekly private meetings that have taken place between The Queen and each of her Prime Ministers. In Westminster, these meetings are carried out with an unspoken rule of utmost privacy.

But Morgan takes the chance to premier an imagined series of scenes that depict the Queen’s preoccupations, preferences and humour through a series of pivotal meetings with leaders like Churchill, Blair and Cameron.

Morgan teams up with director Stephen Daldry, the man who brought us Billy Elliot, as well as boasting a very healthy West End theatre career. He told the Guardian this weekend that he’s delighted to be back in theatre, where he’s happiest.

Mirren’s reprisal of one of her most praised regal roles is cause for great flutter in ticket sales, and theatre goers are encouraged to book early. Those travelling from outside of London to see the show can take a tip from HotelMap for suitable London hotels.

There’s 61% off the Grange Fitzrovia Hotel on February 23rd for two adults sharing, with a 4* double room coming in at £107. Or stay in a serviced apartment on the same night for under £100 – Studios 2 Let have an apartment for £73, on Gower Street in Russell Square.

A New Year’s Eve to be Proud of in Camden

New Year’s Eve can be a bit hit-and-miss in London, especially if you’re coming up to visit and aren’t expecting the massive crowds and very busy buses and tubes that the capital always throws up at the turn of the year.

However, trusty LondonTown.com has come up with its own guide to New Year’s in Londonwhich looks set to separate the wheat from the chaff when it comes to living it up and welcoming in 2013.

LondonTown.com, the UK’s favourite London website, has put together a collection of tips and ideas for NYE, NYD and other special times over the festive period. Of the collection, a few sure-fire hits – great places to go at any time of year – stand out.

One such place is Proud Camden, an art gallery-cum-club set in a restored old stables near Camden Lock Market. The setting alone is enough to guarantee an alternative experience to the wipe-clean day-glo nightclubs of central London : a 200-year old listed building, formerly horse stables, with wooden beams and wide but low rooms.

Hosting photography exhibitions as well as turning into a bit of a trendy music venue at night – with bands like The Libertines helping this place on its way to fame – it’s also a good spot to finish a night, great for dancing and meeting new people.

This NYE, those looking to make a night of it can also splash out on a double room at Camden Lock Holiday Inn for £254 for a double room on New Year’s Eve – a discount of 19% from LondonTown.com.

Mark Rylance returns to the Apollo theatre in Twelfth Night

One of the British theatre’s most loved living actors is back treading the boards on one of his most popular West End stages, in a Shakespeare play which continues to be in high mainstream demand.

Mark Rylance, whose performance in Jez Butterworth’s Jerusalem has been cited as one of the sensations of the last 10 years’ stage acting, returns to the Apollo Theatre – site ofJerusalem’s original West End transfer – with Twelfth Night , from 2 nd November to 3 rd February 2013.

The production marks a return to the all-male Shakespeare which Rylance made so popular during his tenureship at the Globe Theatre on Bankside. Indeed, this year’s production has just spent 3 weeks at the Globe, with Original Practices theatre company, where it has been drowned in good reviews.

Rylance plays Olivia, the swarthy and delicate noblewoman for whom the play’s Duke Orsino is pining. Viola, disguised as a boy, becomes Olivia’s page, and falls madly for Duke Orsino; whilst, in a case of mistaken identities, Olivia falls for the disguised Viola.

West End fans and theatre goers will want to make a weekend of this theatre occasion, and with that in mind, LondonTown.com has sourced some deals for those seeking acheap London hotel to round off their trip.

An excellent option is a one-night stay in a serviced apartment at 36-37 Cartwright Gardens, near the British Museum, for a discounted rate of £94 for a studio room on November 6th.

Those heading up on a weekend can save over 80% on the Thistle Euston Hotel London, with a double for £100 on the Saturday 10th November – saving over £300.

Toursbylocals.Com Helps Travelers Get A Better Travel Experience While Directly Benefiting The People Who Provide Those Travel Experiences

Since its launch in November of 2008, ToursByLocals has been kept busy talking to local people interested in using theToursByLocals system to offer their services as private guides. According to Greg Scott,

Content Manager for ToursbyLocals, “In the past 2 months, we’ve received 97 applications and successfully processed 50 of them, with each guide posting an average of 2 tours”. Continues Scott, “Our vetting process means that each guide must pass an interview and reference check before being added to the system. We have a number of professional tour guides using the system, but we’re particularly pleased to see an increasing number of locals who are using the system to offer ‘their’ experience in the place they live”.

As you might expect, ToursByLocals offers an eclectic selection of tours. As well as sightseeing tours, guides are encouraged to offer tours that reflect their interests and passions. Says Scott, “We suggest each guide offer a tour that they might do if a friend was visiting for the first time. But we also encourage them to offer something out of the ordinary. The tours each guide lists on their profile are just suggestions and travelers can always contact the guide if they have a special request”

Some of the current offerings that fall into the ‘unusual’ category include a young Brazilian man from Belo Horizonte who will take you to the local stadium where you will experience the madness of 106,000 people at a Brazilian soccer match. Or an Icelandic guide who will take you to the best place to see the Northern Lights. Another tour features a young Russian woman from Rybinsk who will take you on a tour of her traditional Russian village.

New guides and tours are being added on a daily basis.
