Here are 5 Reasons to go on Safari in East Africa during the Shoulder & Low Seasons

  1. Save Money East Africa is not the cheapest of African regions to visit. As the traditional heartland of African wildlife safaris, the prices in East Africa are higher than in most Southern African countries. These higher costs can put budget conscious travelers off, but the good news is that prices drop during the off-peak times of the year, bringing these classical safari destinations within reach. One of the reasons prices fall is because mainstream travel advice is to avoid the rainy seasons and that winter game viewing is best. Also, most travelers tend to travel during the northern hemisphere summer and over Christmas and New Years.
  2. You can save between 20 and 40% on safaris outside of the high and peak season.
  3. It’s not just the safari packages that are cheaper in low season, the accommodation rates drop saving you money on pre and post tour accommodation. Activities are also offered at reduced prices, as are day trips.
  4. If you’re travelling independently in Kenya during low season you also have more leverage for bargaining and negotiating better deals too.
  5. Flights are also cheaper, due to lower demand! All-in-all it can make an otherwise too expensive Nairobi safari affordable. We are able to enjoy the amazing moorlands, the beautiful snowcaps, mysterious oceans and seas and incredible wildlife. However, it is our responsibility to ensure that whilst we enjoy the marvels of this world we should be conscious of maintaining the conservation of these wonders.

The shoulder seasons which fall between the low and peak periods offer similar advantages to the low seasons. Falling at the start and end of the rains, the shoulder seasons are often the best time to go on safari travel in Kenyas Amboseli, Lake Nakuru and in terms of balancing cost, game viewing, visitor numbers and weather. The shoulder season between the long and short rains – from January to March, is actually considered by some safari veterans to be the best time to go game viewing in Kenya and Tanzania.

Africa Safaris to the Lake Nakuru National Park Tour is the most popular among conference delegates

Nairobi Kenya, 2016-Jul-22 — /EPR TRAVEL NEWS/ — Each country in Africa is different. We acknowledge that it is impossible to capture the spirit and culture of an entire country in one paragraph. The best and most popular areas in Africa for safaris are East Africa precisely Kenya which offers vast plains and roaming packs of extraordinary beasts.

Lake Nakuru National Park Tour

The Lake Nakuru National Park tour which can also be booked online through Get Your Guide booking site or https://www.getyourguide.com/nairobi-l267/lake-nakuru-national-park-full-day-tour... has become increasingly popular to the delegates attending conferences in Nairobi Kenya. The main reason being the proximity to Nairobi and the time taken which is about 11 hours. While delegates spend their time in meeting rooms and discussion at the end of the day they end up very tired. To unwinding before going back to their countries of residence an 11 hour tour from Nairobi comes in handy. Ones get to see the countryside of Nairobi as well as wildlife and birds at the National Park. The tour is mainly set to depart at 6am and return at 6pm making it easy for clients to connect to their international flights which are normally scheduled in the late evenings. However, if the flight is early one can request for an early arrival or take a full day tour in Nairobi visiting the Nairobi National Park, Elephant Orphanage, Giraffe center, Karen Blixen with lunch at the famous top 100 restaurants of the world the Carnivore Restaurant. Better still a short morning tour to the Nairobi National Park and elephant Orphanage can suffice.

Many travelers come to Africa in search of the “big five”: buffalo, lions, leopards, elephants and rhinoceroses. The chance to get close to these animals in their natural habitats is a once-in-a-lifetime experience, but your trip to the Africa is anything but a trip to the zoo. Travel Destination for 2016 is Kenya -Get the thrill and plan Early

Nairobi, Kenya, November 09, 2015 — /EPR TRAVEL NEWS/ — Destination Kenya

Are there any destinations in the world which can evoke such powerful imagery as Kenya, one of East Africa’s premier destinations? Indeed, the acacia-dotted savannahs of Kenya http://www.cruzeiro-safaris.com/kenya re inhabited by classic African animals, from towering elephants and prancing gazelles to prides of lions and stalking leopards. The country also plays host to the annual migration, the largest single movement of heard animals on the planet. However, what makes Kenya truly stand out as a travel destination is the vast palette of landscapes that comprise this visually stunning country. While the flaunted image of the savannah of Maasai Mara perhaps the single key selling point for Kenya’s tourist industry, intrepid http://www.cruzeiro-safaris.com/index.php?option=com_content&view=article&id=226/ travelers can also explore the barren expanses of the Rift valley, the glacial ridges of Mt. Kenya http://www.cruzeiro-safaris.com/index.php?option=com_content&view=article&id=214/ and the beaches of the Swahili coast. This rich diversity of quintessential Africanhttp://www.cruzeiro-safaris.com/safari-twiga environments present opportunity for hiking, trekking, diving sailing and so much more But to simply focus on Kenya’s wildlife and nature is to ignore the people that make this country so dynamic. Kenya is a thriving multicultural country with a wide cross-section of everything that is classic and contemporary Africa. Everyday life brings together traditional tribes and urban families, ancient customs and modern sensibilities. And, while much of the East Africa has suffered from bitter feud between divided ethnic groups, Kenya has usually been regarded as an island of stability in a trouble region. Kenya may be a somewhat more intimidating destination that it once was, but remains one of the undisputed highlights of Africa. Check your inhibition, ignore the hype, bring your sense of adventure and get ready for some truly inspiring and life-changing travel.

Planning a trip to Kenya is a pleasure in itself: the country is so versatile that it’s virtually a blank canvas, catering equally for the thrill-seekers and sun-seekers, budget backpackers and high-end rollers, those who like it tough and those who just want to get going. Whatever you do here, you’ll discover that it’s very straightforward to sort yourself out of the ground and advance plans are very necessary.

When to go to Kenya: The main tourist season is January, February and March, when the weather is hottest and driest. At this time, the animals in the wildlife parks tend to congregate more around the watercourses, making them easy to spot. However, the parks can get crowded and rates for accommodation soar –also make sure you avoid Christmas and Easter unless you want to pay much higher prices. From June to October, the annual wildebeest migration takes place, with thousands of animals streaming into the Maasai Mara National reserve from Serengeti. During the long rains (the low season April to May) things are much quieter.

Itineraries and Classic Routes
Classic routes put you face to face with the continent’s most charismatic creatures. Safari njema – have a good trip!
Departing from Nairobi, Kenyas capital city one can enjoy the Nairobi city tours at any point where low or high season. Our first port of call is Maasai Mara National Reserve http://www.cruzeiro-safaris.com/maasai-mara. Between July and October, the Maasai Mara plays host to the annual wildebeest migration, which offers a definitive slice of safari Africa. Even if you can’t time your visit to coincide with this epic event, the Mara is still worth visiting as the famous national park in Kenya. The northern trails leads to Samburu National Reserve http://www.cruzeiro-safaris.com/kenya/143-3-dayssamburu-by-road-lodges, a dusty, red, desert habitat that shelters’ species of animals not found elsewhere in Kenya. The safari trail continues down to Amboseli National Park http://www.cruzeiro-safaris.com/kenya/142-3-days-amboselinational-park-by-road, which is regarded as one of the best places in Africa to get up close and personal with the heads of grazing elephants.

In search of the big five
The ultimate goal of any safari-gore is to spot the Big Five, namely lion, leopard, rhino, buffalo and elephant. While you’re going to have to put in a lot of hours to spot them all-particularly the elusive leopard – this itinerary will have you ticking them off the list in no time. Start your search at Lake Nakuru National park, an alkaline lake in the Rift Valley, which is home to many thousands of pink flamingos and pelicans. This vitally important national park also protects the country’s largest population of endangered black rhinos, as well as large herds of buffalo. From lake Nakuru, your next stop is the obligatory Maasai Mara National Reservehttp://www.cruzeiro-safaris.com/maasai-mara-by-air-at-kichwa-tembo-tented-campwhich is veritable lion country, With a little luck you can spot leopards lounging in trees, and cheetahs prowling around the savannahs, from Maasai Mara head south to Naivasha and visit the Hells gate National park swim in the hot water sulfuric swimming pool belonging to the geothermal energy plant. Then head south to the Amboseli national park for a wildlife drive through Kilimanjaro court. Against a back drop of Africa’s tallest peak, you will see dozens of elephants. From Amboseli it’s straight forward drive to the Tsavo West National Park and Tsavo East National Park. Kenya’s largest wildlife parks. As they are relatively undeveloped. Tsavo East and West are where you can truly have a wildlife experience. From here you can head down to the highway to ancient Swahili port of Mombasa http://www.cruzeiro-safaris.com/about-mombasa-safaris-, where you can either fly straight home or start a whole new journey exploring the Kenyan coast. Indeed, its’ just a short trip south west to the Mwaluganje Elephant Sanctuary a small but important reserve that protects elephants migratory routes, and on to the densely forested Shimba Hills National reserve http://www.cruzeiro-safaris.com/about-mombasa-safaris-/230-mombasa-half-day-shiimba-hills home to the rare antelope.

Sun, Surf and Swahili
Whether you’re interest in exploring the remaining vestiges of Swahili culture, or simply kicking it on the beach for days on end, don’t miss the chance to explore Kenya’s sun-drenched coast. From the coastal getaway of Mombasa City, the first stop head south is Tiwi beach, a tranquil white-sand paradise that is popular with independents travelers. Just down the road, you can head on to the package holiday destination of Diani beach for a taste of the more full-on rest experience. Near the Tanzania Border are the Funzi and Wasini islands provide a dose of real, unspoilt coastal life and also afford easy access to the excellent Kisite Marine National Park. Here you can spot the Dolphins http://www.cruzeiro-safaris.com/about-mombasa-safaris-/234-mombasa-one-day-wasini-dolphin-tracking-adventure-tourcrashing each other it’s a wonderful complement to Kenya’s terrestrial wildlife destinations.

Back to the coastal trail make a quick stop in the charming town of Kilifi before pressing on to the Arabuko Sokoke Forest Reserve on the largest remaining tracts of indigenous coastal forest in East Africa. Further north are the Gede ruins and ancient Swahili City that dates back to the 13th century. Another historic town along the Swahili coast is Malindi, a 14th century trading post that is now one of the country’s leading beach destinations for Italian holiday makers. Your itinerary can end its peaks at the wonderful Lamu archipelago a veritable tropical paradise and Swahili heritage gem. One can take up the Summer Package staying in Mombasa and travelling to the Tsavo Park and back.

Roads Less Travelled: Desert Frontiers
This unbeaten trail winds through the harsh and barren landscapes around Lake Turkana, which dominates the northwest corner of the country. The Eastern getaway to this region is the small town of Isiolo, Just north of Mt Kenya. There are several good national parks and wildlife reserve in this area. One can plough through straight to the desert route and head up the rough road to Marsabit the dusty tribal centre of this remote area which boasts a fine national park. Assuming you are not tempted to hope over the border to Ethiopia at Moyale, a real wild frontier, take the western loop to Turkana via North Horr heading for the tiny lake side settlement of Loiyangalani a base for trips into even more remote parts of the country. From here the trail leads through again passing all kinds of scenic zones and the stopover towns of South Horr and Baragoi. It’s worth stopping for a couple of days in Maralal to replenish supplies and sample the joys of camel-trekking. Your could end your trip here but for the full effect, head up to the other side of Turkana, passing though the lush western area around marich to reach sweltering Lodwar and the lovely lake shore at Eliye Springs http://www.cruzeiro-safaris.com/kenya/260-952-for-3-days-package-to-lake-turkana.

When is the best time to spot animals?
When you visit Kenya’s parks and reserves, you’ll be spending a lot of time craning your neck and keeping watchful eyes out for animals and birds. There are a few telltale signs to note, as we as a few things you can do to maximize your chances of spotting the Big Five. Most are just common sense.

The best time to view wildlife to between 6.30am and 9.30am and from 3.30am to 6.30 pm. Cruzeiro Safaris makes sure they you during these timings. Wildlife drives in the mid of the day are unlikely to turn up much, (although there are popular parks such as Amboseli and Maasai Mara), animals are actually changing their normal hunting habits to avoid the tourist. When the tourists head back to the lodges for lunch, the carnivores go out hunting – in peace. In wooded country, agitated and noisy monkeys or baboons are often a sign that there’s a big cat (probably a leopard) around. Vultures circling are not necessarily an indication of a kill below. But if they are gathering in trees and seem to be watching something, you can reasonably assume they are waiting their turn for a go at a carcass.

One final note – taking longer safari is great, but endless long days peering out of a sunroof, on bumpy roads, in the heat, eating the same food stuck with the same people can take its toll quicker than you might think. Any animal you see on the first day will be exciting, though sooner or later most travelers will experience safari fatigue, that jaded feeling of ‘not another zebra, I wanna see a freaking leopard’. If this happens a few cultural activities and afternoon’s relaxations or even just a quick swim can do wonders for keeping things fresh. Or just take an air package especially for single travelers.

LondonTown.com: London landscapes celebrated in new exhibition

South London parks are the subject of new photographic exhibition at the Horniman Museum.

LONDON, June 08, 2015 — /EPR TRAVEL NEWS/ — A new photographic exhibition celebrating London’s lesser-known landscapes open this month at one of London’s friendliest museums. South London Landscapes is now open at the Horniman Museum And Gallery this week and runs throughout the summer, featuring photographs of the Horniman itself as well as other picturesque public spaces in and around south London. The Horniman is one of London’s liveliest small museums, boasting excellent natural history and music galleries, a small aquarium and extensive landscaped grounds. For more information, and to see the latest deals on London hotels, see LondonTown.com.

South London Landscapes features photographs taken by London-based landscape photographer Max A Rush. The photographs, which include pictures of the Horniman Gardens, are taken in unusual and beautiful weather and capture how the passage of the seasons and the forces of the weather transform the appearance and character of the local landscape. Areas featured in South London Landscapes include Brockwell Park, Crystal Palace Park, Dulwich Park, Dulwich Wood, Ruskin Park and the Horniman Gardens.

Max Rush says: ‘These are a few of my favourite locations around south London. I’ve continually returned to them over the years, watching the seasons pass and the elements batter, freeze and occasionally warm their well-worn faces. I’ve witnessed moments of transcendental beauty in familiar places and endeavoured to capture them as truthfully as I can. So many people fight their way out of the city every week for the sake of nature, but perhaps what they’re looking for was here all along.’ For more information on this and other exhibitions and events taking place at the Horniman this summer, see LondonTown.com.

LondonTown.com: Groundbreaking London exhibition looks at post-war Black British artists

Guildhall Art Gallery explores the work of little-known but pivotal Afro-Caribbean artists

LONDON, June 08, 2015 — /EPR TRAVEL NEWS/ — A groundbreaking new exhibition at the Guildhall Art Gallery in the City of London will look at the little-known and rarely exhibited history of 20th-century Black British art. No Colour Bar: Black British Art in Action 1960-1990 runs from 10 July 2015 to 24 January 2016, and will explore the history of art produced by Britain’s Afro-Caribbean citizens, reflecting their experiences in the country after the major emigrations that occurred following the end of the Empire at the conclusion of the Second World War. For more information on this and other exhibitions in London this summer, see LondonTown.com, where you can also find information on London events and cheap London hotels.

At the heart of the exhibition will be a recreation of the Bogle-L’Ouverture Walter Rodney bookshop, created by renowned artist and curator Dr Michael McMillan (West Indian Front Room) and sound and visual specialists, Dubmorphology. Visitors will be able to immerse themselves in a stunning multi-sensory, multi-visual experience including works of art, sculpture, photographs, paintings, letters and other artefacts from more than 25 prominent Black artists during this period including Eddie Chambers, Sonia Boyce, Denzil Forrester and Chila Kumari Burman.

Influenced by the emergence of newly independent African and Caribbean states, global liberation struggles, the fight against unfair discrimination and an insistence on dignified citizenship within Britain, these artists found expression by way of ‘creation for liberation’. The exhibition will explore these struggles and celebrate their contribution through four themes: ‘Elbow Room’, ‘Broad Shoulders’, ‘Clenched Fists’ and ‘Open Arms’.

Throughout its tenure, No Colour Bar: Black British Art in Action 1960-1990 will also play host to a series of scheduled events enriching the visitor experience through a diverse range of educational talks, workshops and gallery tours. LondonTown.com: Cutting-edge US artist receives first major European show in London this summer

Raven Row gallery in Spitalfields hosts a retrospective of ground-breaking US artist Larry Johnson.

LONDON, June 08, 2015 — /EPR NETWORK/ — One of America’s most interesting contemporary artists is to receive his first major European exhibition at a new gallery that focuses on cutting-edge, avant-garde art. Raven Row is a non-profit contemporary art exhibition centre in Spitalfields that is housed within two eighteenth-century merchants’ houses integrated with new galleries and its next exhibition, Larry Johnson: On Location runs from 11 June to 9 August 2015. It is directed and funded by Alex Sainsbury of the Sainsbury family, whose family have funded many great art projects in London, such as the Sainsbury Wing of the National Gallery. Raven Row is a very different enterprise, offering thoughtful shows on lesser-known artists and allowing visitors to explore the fascinating quarter of Spitalfields. The area is filled with fashionable boutiques, great shops and cool bars and restaurants. To explore its attractions, see LondonTown.com, where you can also find the latest room rates for hotels in London.

On Location brings together a selection of works by Larry Johnson from the early 1990s to the present. The show’s uncontested star is Los Angeles, the city in which Johnson has lived and worked all his life. For over thirty years, LA’s physical and imaginary appearance has served as the set for the artist’s photo-based investigations of the glamour industry, replete with fading stars and premature deaths. Johnson’s work bears the marks of a generation of artists sampling readymade images and texts to create seductively laconic pictures. Yet the colourful sheen of Johnson’s photo-based works is also a foil for sexual, political and semantic tension. The artist’s pictures are encryptions of a Hollywood demi-monde, referring to the cultures from which his work emerges queer, political, filmic and theoretical.

The exhibition is curated by Los Angeles-based writer Bruce Hainley, and by Antony Hudek, Curator and Deputy Director of Raven Row. Commie Pinko Guy, a publication edited by Hainley with new essays by Morgan Fisher, Lisa Lapinski, Hainley, Hudek and Wayne Koestenbaum, as well as reprints of classic underground queer writing, will accompany the exhibition. For more information on this and other exhibitions in London’s cutting-edge contemporary art scene, see LondonTown.com.

LondonTown.com: Classic London cinema at the Southbank all summer

BFI Southbank unveils new season dedicated to films exploring the UK capital.

LONDON, June 08, 2015 — /EPR TRAVEL NEWS/ — London On Film is a new major season of films at the BFI Southbank that will explore and celebrate the capital for four months from 1st July to 9th October. This is the first time the BFI has ever celebrated the city in which it is based, and will feature 200 films, a number of which have been unseen since they were first filmed, offering an extraordinary perspective of the city from the past 120 years. The BFI Southbank is the national home of cinema, featuring three state-of-the-art screens in Waterloo on the Southbank. For more on this vital cultural quarter, as well as the latest rates forLondon hotels, seeLondonTown.com.

The London On Film season will include events such as a Soho Weekender (24-26 July) to celebrate the unique culture of Soho captured in films from 1896 – 1985 such as West End Jungle (1961), The Small World of Sammy Lee(1963) and Sunshine in Soho (1956). There will also be a discussion event Vanishing Soho on the state of Soho today in the light of current major changes for those who live and play there. It will include some of the earliest films ever made, such as RW Paul’s Blackfriars Bridge (1896(. Films from major filmmakers include Anthony Asquith’s evocative Underground (1928), the first feature to be shot on the underground and Nicolas Roeg’s Performance (1970), which takes us into the dangerous realms of psychedelic and sexual experimentation. There will also be films by Alfred Hitchcock, Michael Winterbottom and Otto Preminger.

Black experience is highlighted in a series of key films including Earl Cameron’s pioneering role as a black sailor in the crime drama Pool of London (1951) with fine use of locations around Tower Bridge, Poplar, Southwark and the City; Cameron also stars in the little seen The Heart Within (1957) another crime thriller set in London’s Docklands. Sapphire (Basil Dearden, 1959) is a film-maker’s response to the Notting Hill race riots wrapped up in a murder mystery while Babylon (Franco Rosso, 1981) shows the demoralisation of black youth, and offers an eerily prescient portrait of the situation in Deptford which would give rise to the Brixton Riots of the same year. LondonTown.com: British Museum gets its medals out for the great French Sun King

Free exhibition at the museum showcases remarkable 17th-century emblems of Louis XIV’s reign

LONDON, June 08, 2015 — /EPR TRAVEL NEWS/ — The British Museum is holding a new exhibition that looks at the medals drawn from the reign of the great French Sun King, Louis XIV. Triumph and disaster: medals of the Sun King runs from 4 June to 15 November and marks the tercentenary year of the death of Louis XIV. It is one of several free exhibitions that are held at the British Museum every year to draw attention to the many easily overlooked marvels within its collection and to present them in new ways to mark anniversaries or to reinterpret the material. For more information on the full programme of exhibitions at the British Museum, see LondonTown.com, where you can also find the latest information on cheap hotels in London.

The Louis XIV medals are preserved as they were in Louis XIV’s own day and includes contributions from the British Library which has a unique manuscript scrapbook of drawings and notes on the creation of the history, and the V&A. The medals were a way for the king to portray his reign and the greatest writers (including Jean Racine), historians, artists and medalists of the day were brought together by the king to ensure that posterity would see his rule as Louis wished it to be seen: the reign of an ideal and ever victorious monarch.

The early medals portray a dazzling image of a ‘Sun King,’ who is represented as hard-working, accessible, generous and just; a king that worked for the benefit of the people, glorifying as much in their happiness as in victory over his enemies. The picture changed as war succeeded war and defeat succeeded victory. The later medals, though careful to represent only French successes, are so numerous that they give the impression not of victory but of endless and draining warfare.

Elsewhere in Europe, particularly in the Netherlands, medals were produced that mocked and satirized the official French medals. These rival medals showed the French sun eclipsed by the zodiacal signs of his enemies, and Louis as an old man being roundly beaten by Queen Anne. Collectively, these medals and attendant literature present a fascinating and unique self-portrait of a regime which dominated Europe for nearly sixty years, and which established the primacy of French taste and French culture for over a century.

LondonTown.com: Lost legend of British art acclaimed in new exhibition

One of Britain’s great portrait artists is celebrated at National Portrait Gallery.

LONDON, April 29, 2015 — /EPR TRAVEL NEWS/ — The National Portrait Gallery, one of the world’s leading galleries in portraiture art and photography, will be rediscovering the work of a lost great of British art. Cornelius Johnson: Charles I’s Forgotten Painter (15th April-13th September 2015) will be the first ever display of works by the seventeenth-century artist Cornelius Johnson, forgotten court painter to Charles I. It will include four rarely seen portraits of royal children, all from the National Portrait Gallery’s Collection, to tell the story of one of Britain’s most successful and prolific artists. The National Portrait Gallery is located in the heart of the West End in Trafalgar Square. For visitors to London hoping to learn more about this and other exhibitions in London this year, see LondonTown.com, where you can also find the latest listings for restaurants, as well as details on summer events and cheaphotels in London.

The exhibition will include portraits of Charles I’s three royal children – the future Charles II, the future James II, and Mary, later Princess of Orange-Nassau. These are poignant reminders of their tumultuous lives (partly spent in exile), while the fourth portrait, of Mary’s son William, was painted when the boy’s position was in jeopardy. Largely neglected by both British and Dutch art historians, Johnson had the bad luck to be overshadowed as a court painter by Sir Anthony van Dyck (1599–1641), who settled in London in 1632 to work for Charles I, and then to have his own British career curtailed by the British Civil Wars. Having been trained in the Netherlands, and having painted Charles I and the elite of the period, many of whom were soon to be engulfed in the Civil Wars, Johnson was a chronicler of a doomed generation, on the edge of war.

The display will contain eight painted portraits and six print from the National Portrait Gallery’s primary and archive collections, most of them rarely seen, and three paintings from Tate which have never been previously displayed together. This will be the first show ever on this artist’s work. For more information on this and other exhibition in London this summer, see LondonTown.com

LondonTown.com: New exhibition celebrates great Spanish poets and writers

The work of Civil War exiles examined in eight-week programme in London.

LONDON, April 29, 2015 — /EPR TRAVEL NEWS/ — A new exhibition in London will celebrate the remarkable contribution to British cultural life made bySpanish writers and poets exiled in the UK during the Spanish Civil War, exploring the crucial role they played in the Allied cause. The Waiting Room, which runs from 28th April to 30th June, is an eight-week programme of art, literature, music and film held at the Cervantes Institute in Eaton Square. For more information on this and other exhibitions opening in London in 2015, see LondonTown.com, where you can also find the latest news on London hotels, restaurants, bars and shops.

The Waiting Room will examine the lives and work of some of Spain’s most significant literary figures – Arturo Barea, Luis Cernuda, Manuel Chaves Nogales, Salvador de Madariaga and Rafael Martinez Nadal among others – presenting contemporary perspectives on the contributions they made to identity, culture, politics and society. Barea and Nogales are central to the exhibition. Barea worked in the Foreign Ministry’s Press Office where he got to know Ernest Hemingway and other foreign journalists, and during the Seige of Madrid, became known as An Unknown Voice of Madrid, for his nightly broadcasts about daily life in the besieged city. Arriving in London in 1939, he began working for the Spanish section of the BBC World Service and became a prolific writer, producing biographies, short stories, a novel and journalism. A new commission by Jordi Ruiz Cirea, Catalan photographer and 2012 winner of the Taylor Wessing Portrait Photography Prize, explores the rarely seen archive of his work before it enters the Bodleian Library in Oxford.

Nogales, an anti-fascist and anti-revolutionary editor, journalist and writer left Spain, as did many intellectuals, when the government abandoned Madrid for Valencia. His prodigious literary output includes one of the best-known books on bullfighting, Juan Belmonte, killer of bulls; and Heroes, Beasts and Martyrs of Spain, considered to be a classic reflection on the suffering of both sides during the Civil War. On the Gestapo hit list for denouncing Nazism, he fled Paris for England as the German army approached the city. In London he became director of The Atlantic Press Agency, wrote a column for the Evening Standard and collaborated with the BBC on their overseas broadcasts. He died in 1944 and lies buried in an unmarked grave in west London. Other events will recall other exiles, among them composer Roberto Gerhard and poet Luis Cernud, in a series of talks, concerts and recitals.
