Where2Golf Celebrates 10th Anniversary as Golf’s Ultimate Online Information Source

LONDON, England, February 16, 2015 — /EPR TRAVEL NEWS/ — is celebrating its 10th anniversary as the ultimate online information source for the game of golf where golfers can ‘discover the best’ in golf travel and refer to its vast library of golf facts, figures and images.

Whilst first and foremost a comprehensive guide to the finest golf courses and the top golf destinations in the world, Where2Golf also houses an encyclopaedia of golf information covering international tournaments, both professional and amateur, a Who’s Who of golf, from the world’s best professionals to some of golf’s best course designers, as well as a golf dictionary that explains the game’s unique terminology.

Where2Golf began as a hobby back in 2002 for site founders, Nigel Butler and Suzanne Lenaerts, but it was three years later when they quit corporate life and committed themselves fulltime to expanding Where2Golf that it began to crystallize into the complete golf resource that it is today.

The professional development of the website started in 2005 with the couple visiting golf destinations and playing golf courses around the globe to ensure that their content was tried, tested and true and that the information they were providing was as accurate and objective as it could be.

“Nigel and I realised that if we were going to take on the huge task of growing Where2Golf into one of the world’s most complete golf guide we needed to devote 100% of our time to the project,” explains Suzanne. “ We gave up our jobs and began by seeking out and playing what most golfers would describe as the “best” golf courses on the planet. The Where2Golf resource you see today is the culmination of our combined experience of playing, assessing and covering over 4,500 golf courses over the last 10 years, from Europe to America, Australasia to Africa”.

As the content grew, so the website traffic grew.

Testament to the reputation the site has gained as a credible and reliable course reviewer, Where2Golf now generates an impressive 90,000 views per month and rising.

Though not exhaustive, this unique resource represents a wide and rich selection of courses that the general consensus of travelling golfers all over the world would want to play. To keep Where2Golf live, course reviews and new golfing destinations are added to and updated regularly. Turkey for example has recently been included in the golf destinations section.

The golf course reviews are based on Nigel’s and Suzanne’s assessment of three main aspects of a course: the quality of the design and layout, the conditioning and presentation and the attractiveness of the setting. The quality of the clubhouse, practice ground and associated facilities above and beyond the golf course are not factored into the ratings.

Another unique feature of the website is its high quality maps that feature all the courses Where2Golf covers. These maps are a powerful tool when planning a golf trip and mean that golfers can identify their preferred location boasting several great courses while basing themselves centrally. A quick click on each course details nearby recommended hotels whilst ‘Stay & Play’ courses are also indicated.

The encyclopaedia section of Where2Golf is as comprehensive as its golf course coverage.

In the Tournaments category, the results of all the top professional tournaments on the PGA, European, LPGA, LET, Asian and Seniors Tours are covered as well as the top amateur (both men and ladies) scene. Incredibly this coverage goes back as far as 1860.

The Who’s Who category  not only includes the world’s top players but also celebrated golf course designers, golf journalists and club makers and many other golf “celebrities”. Biographies of each individual are listed as well as golfing achievements and their contribution to the world of golf.

Finally a dictionary on the site explains the meaning of the terminology used in the game and offers the first steps in trying to demystify what the sport is about and making it more understandable and approachable.

After 10 years in the making, Where2Golf really is the most comprehensive one-stop shop for travelling golfers.

Punk lives again in London this summer

A new photographic exhibition in the centre of the City of London will open next month featuring some of the world’s greatest images of the punk rock movement. Curated by punk writer and theorist Jon Savage, the exhibition is called I Got You In My Camera: Punk 1976-1979 and will run from 2nd July to 27th July at the Olympus Rockarchive Image Space Gallery at 199 Bishopsgate. The gallery is located in the heart of the City, close to St Paul’s Cathedral, the Bank Of England and other symbols of the British establishment that the punk movement so disliked. For more on the many attractions in this area of London, see, where you will also find information about London hotels, shops and restaurants, as well as events taking place throughout the summer in all parts of the capital.

The punk exhibition has been pulled together under the guidance of Savage, who has secured work from some of the greatest punk photographers of the London scene – featuring the Sex Pistols, Clash, Damned and Buzzcocks – but also in New York, where the likes of the Ramones, Patti Smith, Television and Talking Heads performed. Photographers involved include the likes of Sheila Rock, Roberta Bayley, Richard Mann, Adrian Boot, Bob Gruen, Ray Stevenson  and  Jill Furmanovsky, many of whom will be exhibiting together for the first time, providing rich visual material of an iconic, image-led season in never-before-seen photographs. Some of the musicians that will be featured in the exhibition include Johnny Rotten, Joe Strummer, Debbie Harry, Patti Smith and Sid Vicious.

The exhibition will focus on the core years of punk, from 1976 when the scenes in both New York and London began to take off, to 1979, when Sid Vicious died of a heroin overdose at the Chelsea Hotel in New York City. There will be a series of punk-themed evenings taking place throughout the exhibition. For more information, see

Macdonald Hotels & Resorts, the UK’s largest privately owned hotel group, has picked up five prestigious industry accolades at the Scottish Hotel Awards 2012.

The Scottish Hotel Awards, now in its ninth year, is designed to recognise and reward the highest standards, individually and corporately, and to celebrate the excellence and achievement of hotels in Scotland.

Macdonald Hotels was presented with the Group Breakfast of the Year Award, and the head chef from the four-star Macdonald Marine Hotel & Spa, North Berwick, was honoured along with three members of the team from Macdonald Cardrona Hotel, Golf & Spa, for their individual efforts.

Executive chef John Paul McLachlan from the four-star Macdonald Marine Hotel & Spa, North Berwick, beat off stiff competition from restaurants across Scotland to be crowned Scottish Hotel Chef of the Year for his signature restaurant, John Paul at the Marine. General Manager Morag Stark from the Macdonald Cardrona Hotel, Golf & Spa won the Hotel Manager Gold Medal, while her colleague, executive chef Ivor Clark, won the Hotel Chef Medaille a’Argent award and Gina Clark won Events Manager of the Year.

John Paul at the Marine opened in June 2011, specialising in the finest organic seasonal dishes. With two prestigious AA Rosettes, executive chef John Paul, who has worked under culinary greats such as Raymond Blanc and Gordon Ramsay, served up a host of innovative signature dishes with a modern take on traditional fare. Brasserie-style prices coupled with Scottish-influenced dishes, served against the spectacular backdrop of the Firth of Forth, raise the restaurant bar in East Lothian.

Morag, who has been with Macdonald Cardrona Hotel, Golf & Spa in Peebles for seven years, is celebrating her second consecutive management gold medal from the awards. With almost 17 years’ experience in the hotel industry, sales manager Gina Clark has built an impressive career within Macdonald Hotels, starting as a trainee receptionist and progressing from this position. She won the award for Events Manager of Year for increasing the number of weddings at the hotel in Peebles by 57 per cent year on year. Chef Ivor Clark has extensive experience from kitchens across the UK and abroad and climbed the industry ladder from commis chef to head chef at Macdonald Cardrona Hotel, Golf & Spa in his home town.

Macdonald Hotels Wins 2012 Menu Innovation and Development Award for Best Breakfast

For the second time in three years, Macdonald Hotels has won the award for Best Breakfast at The Menu Innovation and Development Awards (MIDAS). The MIDAS awards aim to recognise the outstanding talents of menu development managers and group executive chefs in the multi-unit and chain restaurants sectors of the food service industry.

Alan Swinson, Catering Director of Macdonald Hotels was presented the award by Eamon Flavin, Managing Director of Delice de France sponsor of Best Breakfast.

Alan said: “It’s an honour to once again win the MIDAS Award for Best Breakfast. At Macdonald Hotels & Resorts, we are immensely proud of the quality we offer to our guests and are happy that MIDAS has recognised our high standards.”

Anna Longthorp from Anna’s Happy Trotters, supplier of sausages to the group, commented: “We are delighted that Macdonald Hotels has won this award. We’re fortunate to work with a hotel collection that cares so much about sourcing top quality, high welfare produce. Many hotels and restaurants are purely fixated on price and our pigs, being free range cost rather a lot more to produce than your average pig but this shows in the quality. Macdonald Hotels could source pork a lot cheaper, such as imported pork, so this just demonstrates their commitment to welfare, provenance and quality.”

The privately-owned hotel group works with a small selection of UK-based suppliers, meaning its restaurant chefs can employ the best raw ingredients to construct menus based on seasonality, sustainability, flavour and provenance, ensuring all food is bursting with nutrients and flavour.

Having invested £120k last year to improve its breakfast menu, Macdonald Hotels takes the most important meal of the day very seriously. Unlike many other hotel groups, Macdonald Hotels’ restaurants celebrate the best ingredients on offer across all areas of catering; breakfast, lunch, room service, conference and banqueting, using only the most fresh of ingredients. Breakfast choice at Macdonald Hotels includes:
– A range of healthy organic mueslis, fresh fruit, yogurt and granola
– Sausages from pigs raised by Anna’s Happy Trotters in Free Range conditions, using only back and belly meat from breeds such as ‘Duroc’ and ‘Maximus’
– Freshly baked all butter croissants, breads and pastries
– Freedom foods approved John Ross Jnr smoked salmon which is smoked in a 150 year old traditional kiln
– 100% Free Range eggs
– Milk from Graham’s The Family Dairy

The group has been awarded over 40 AA Rosettes for its restaurants and its food promise is reflected in the recruitment of the very best in fine dining talent. John Paul Maclachlan, Executive Chef at Macdonald Marine Hotel in North Berwick, learnt his trade with Gordon Ramsay and Raymond Blanc, and Aidan Byrne, who established the British Grill at the group’s Macdonald Craxton Wood Hotel near Chester, remains the youngest UK chef to have won a Michelin Star at the age of 22.

The Macdonald Hill Valley Hotel Golf and Spa is well-known as one of the top 10 golf venues in the UK but it is also one of the most prestigious venues for weddings in Shropshire with a luxury spa and health club as well as conference facilities for up to 300 people.

It had been a quick rise to the top for the 39-year-old who simply knocked on restaurant doors until someone gave him the job he wanted after leaving the holiday park. He said it was this kind of dedication that could make the difference in the eyes of potential employers in 2012.

“It’s easy to put a letter in the post enquiring about employment but if someone with the right attitude walked into my hotel, I would give them a chance,” he said.

Before becoming general manager of Hill Valley, Terence worked his way up through the ranks, starting with waiting tables shortly after graduating from university.

Over the years he has worked in three and four star hotels throughout the North West – including in his hometown of Liverpool while it was the European Capital of Culture – and has managed the catering for the weddings of Steven Gerrard, Jamie Carragher and Michael Owen.

He believes the best managers are those who have experienced work at all levels of their industry.

“You understand the pressures your employees are under if you have done it yourself,” he said.

“The most important thing to me as general manager is attention to detail, the moment I walk into a hotel I will notice if the background music isn’t on, if a light bulb is broken or if the temperature isn’t quite right.

“They may sound like small things but they make a difference to customers and that is what concerns me.

“Every day you should come into work and ask what are we doing and how can we do it better?”

Macdonald Hotels & Resorts signs management agreement with Donnington Grove Country Club

Macdonald Hotels & Resorts, the UK’s largest privately owned hotel operator with over forty 4 and 5 star hotels throughout the UK and Spain, has further increased its market presence by signing a management contract with the owner of Donnington Grove Country Club in Newbury, Berkshire.

The agreement gives Macdonald Hotels & Resorts management control of the prestigious 18th century, 32 bedroom hotel, renowned for the quality of its conference, championship golf, fishing and clay pigeon facilities.

The owners, Sandtrend Ltd, retain the management of the pro shop, golf and estate pursuits.

Offering guests spectacular views from the hotel, the River Lambourn runs through 550 acres of the picturesque estate comprised of woodland and mature parkland.

The current staff will be retained in the deal that means Macdonald Hotels & Resorts now manage the country club hotel on behalf of the current owners.

The terms of the agreement will also see the Donnington Grove Country Club retain its own brand identity while Macdonald Hotels & Resorts will steadily implement its hotel-wide operational practices, controls and quality standards.

Referring to the arrangement, Chris Gillett, Managing Director, Macdonald Hotels Management Services Ltd, commented: “Macdonald Hotels & Resorts is very pleased to have agreed a management contract with this wonderful Hotel & Country Club.

“This agreement will further strengthen our portfolio along the M4 corridor and appeal to our discerning business, leisure and conference guests who seek the reassurance and quality of product and service offered by Macdonald Hotels & Resorts.

“Nigel Green, the general manager of the Donnington Grove Country Club and a former employee of Macdonald Hotels is familiar with our high professional standards. As a company we now look forward to supporting Nigel and his staff in further developing the potential of this beautifully appointed country house hotel.”

The Gothic styled house dates back to 1763. Overlooked by Donnington Castle, the original mansion house was built by James Pettit – Andrews. Following its sale to William Brummell in 1783, the house was transformed into a country estate.

The property was requisitioned in 1940 for Allied Supplies Ltd. In the 1990’s, Dave Thomas, one of Britain’s foremost golf architects was tasked with creating a golf course in keeping with the listed landscape gardens. The construction of the course started in November 1991 and on the 12 June 1993 the Donnington Grove Country Club opened. Sandtrend Ltd purchased the estate in 2004.
