The Chap Olympiad Celebrates Its 10th Anniversary

The Chap Olympiad returns to London on the 12th July 2014, celebrating its 10th anniversary. Orchestrated by The Chap magazine, the annual event is not so much a sporting occasion, more a celebration of buffoonery and ineptitude. Tickets are on sale now and always sell out prior to the event so be sure to snap yours up now. For those also looking to book a London hotel, visit LondonTown.com where a great selection for all budgets can be found.

Taking place at Bedford Square Gardens, one of the best preserved set pieces of Georgian architecture in London, the distinguished gathering invites members of the public to take part in a number of zany showdowns such as Umbrella Jousting, using bicycles and brollies instead of horses and lances; and Tug of Hair, in which a lengthy handlebar moustache is used in place of a rope. Designed to separate the chaps from the cads, anyone can compete to win the bronze, silver and gold cravats. Guests are advised to wear elegant finery, period military wear, formal wear or dandy wear – strictly no sportswear (except cricket whites), denim or sneakers.

Further to the ‘sporting’ events, there will also be sandwiches and Pimm’s by the bucket load. Tickets are £20 for the day or £35 for the day and entry to the evening Blitz Party. For more information visit LondonTown.com.

LondonTown.com: The magic of Wembley lives on as Arsenal and Hull prepare to contest FA Cup Final

It’s that time of year again. As a long an frequently dramatic football season reaches its conclusion with a crescendo of triumph and disappoint, the last hurrah of the 2013/2014 season will once again fall on FA Cup Final day.

This year’s cup final, on Saturday 17th May, is an all Premier League contest between Arsenal and Hull and looks set to crown a memorable season with what could be a truly competitive clash. Though the FA Cup is frequently said to have lost some of its sparkle in recent years the big day remains an undoubted highlight of the football calendar and a great day out for both fans of the finalists and neutrals keen to experience the unique atmosphere of Wembley on cup final day.

This year’s final has the makings of a keenly contested, high quality match, with Arsenal desperate to crown a sporadically impressive season with their first silverware since 2005. Indeed Arsene Wenger’s men will be keen not to allow their barren spell extend to a full decade and salvage something tangible from a season that started with so much promise.

Hull will go to Wembley fulfilling the role of pluck outsiders but won’t be too intimidated after a successful return to the top tier of English football during which they’ve frequently exceeded expectations.

With so many fans descending on Wembley for the cup final, demand for hotels is sure to be high. And whether you’re there to support Arsenal or Hull or simply looking to enjoy a thrilling day out, finding decent accommodation in convenient proximity to Wembley can a challenge on cup final weekend.

Which is where LondonTown.com comes in. With a great selection of cheap hotels in London within a stone’s throw of Wembley stadium, LondonTown.com is a great way to find you perfect cup final accommodation.

The Hilton London Wembley hotel is a mere three minute walk from the stadium and available from LondonTown.com with a 40% discount while the Ibis London Wembley hotel is just and convenient and couldn’t be more affordable, with discounted rooms starting at just £26.

London prepares for first of two NFL International Series games

The first of two historic NFL regular-season games touches down at Wembley Stadium this autumn as the Minnesota Vikings ‘host’ the Pittsburgh Steelers on Sunday 29th September. The clash takes place one month ahead of the second 2013 NFL International Series games at Wembley and concludes an action-packed sporting month that also sees England take on Moldova in their latest World Cup qualifying gameas well as the first ever ITU World Triathlon Grand Final come in London.

An estimated 80,000 fans are expected to fill Wembley to see the Vikings play their first game in the UK since a 1983 pre-season clash at the old Wembley Stadium. Their opponents, the Steelers, boast the NFL record of six Super Bowl championships and will be making their first ever London appearance. The Steelers’ President is a certain Art Rooney II – and with a name like that, he will no doubt be looking for inspiration from his namesake footballer, who often gets on the scoresheet at Wembley.

Wayne Rooney is indeed expected to lead the line for England as they take on Moldova at 8pm on Friday 6th September in their latest Group H World Cup qualifier. Currently two points behind table toppers Montenegro, the home side have only ever played Moldova three times, with the results being 3-0, 4-0 and 5-0. If the sequence continues then England will coast to an easy 6-0 win before Roy Hodgson’s side travel to Kiev for their next qualifying clash against Ukraine just four days later.

Important Premier League fixtures in September include the mouth-watering North London derby between Arsenal and Tottenham Hotspur at the Emirates Stadium on Sunday 1st September, a West London derby between Chelsea and Fulham at Stamford Bridge on Saturday 21st September and Spurs welcoming Chelsea to White Hart Lane on Saturday 28th September. Visitors attending any of these scintillating fixtures from outside London can book their accommodation on LondonTown.com, where there’s a wide variety of Cheap London Hotels to suit all budgets and locations.

Running (cycling and swimming) from Wednesday 11th September to Sunday 15th September, the eighth and final leg of the 2013 ITU World Triathlon Series comes to Hyde Park following the overwhelming success of last summer’s Olympics. Home hope Jonathan Brownlee, the bronze medallist in London 2012, is the current defending champion while his brother Alistair, who took the gold medal last July, won the title the year before. Joining the Brownlee brothers over an identical course to that used during London 2012 will be five thousand of the world’s top triathletes (both male and female and from varying age groups) competing over six days in and around the famous Serpentine Boating Lake.

For those less experienced, September starts with Tri Together, a series of triathlons open to people of all ages and abilities, at the Crystal Palace National Sports Centre on Sunday 1st September. Skipping out the swim, the London Duathlon takes place in Richmond Park on Sunday 15th September, while the Palace to Palace Bike Ride on Sunday 22nd September sees around four thousand riders take on a 45-mile route from Buckingham Palace to Windsor Palace, passing over many of the roads used in the London 2012 Olympic road race.

Following England’s retaining of The Ashes, the LV County Championships reaches its conclusion this September with Middlesex still in the hunt for the Division One title but bottom-of-the-table Surrey battling relegation. Surrey welcome their fellow Londoners Middlesex to the Oval from 3rd September, Middlesex’s final game of the season at Lord’s takes place from 11th September against Nottinghamshire, while Surrey’s final home game is against Yorkshire from 24th September.

Madcap runners will be going bananas in the seventh annual Great Gorilla Run over a seven-mile route in the City on Saturday 21st September, while the second NFL International Series game of the autumn sees the Jacksonville Jaguars take on the San Francisco 49ers one month later on Sunday 27th October.

Wembley Welcomes Moldova For Vital World Cup Qualifier

On Friday 6th September, England are set to face Moldova at Wembley, in a World Cup qualifying match widely expected to end in a comfortable win for the home nation, if last year’s 5-0 victory over the footballing minnows at the Zimbru Stadium is anything to go by. The game will kick off at around 7.45pm, and travelling fans have learned of a number of discounted London hotels close to the stadium, announced in partnership with information and booking website LondonTown.com.

Roy Hodgson’s side go on to face their main Group H rivals Ukraine four days later in Kiev. The impending tough tie might prompt the Three Lions to play a little more cautiously against the Moldovans, but anything less than a convincing win will be considered a disappointment for fans.

If England can see off Moldova and Ukraine, they need only despatch group leaders Montenegro on October 11th to be assured of a place at the finals in Brazil next year. Three successive wins would take the pressure off during the recently announced final qualifying match against Poland, which will be played at Wembley on October 15th.

Hodgson’s players are currently sitting in second place, two points behind Montenegro and one ahead of Ukraine, with four matches remaining. In preparation for the upcoming qualifiers, England will meet Scotland in an international friendly, taking place in front of an 80,000-strong crowd at Wembley.

The recently re-opened Wembley Stadium is the second largest in Europe, and sits in North London, easily accessible via public transport from the city centre. To coincide with the Moldova match, LondonTown.com have announced a number of discounts on London hotels close to the stadium.

Located just a ten minute walk from Wembley Stadium on South Way, the Ibis London Wembley is clean, spacious, quiet and affordable. With the 61% discount offered via LondonTown.com, football fans can stay close to the action for as little as £43 per night.

Just as close is the Holiday Inn London-Wembley, which is offering twin rooms from £74 per night – an 81% reduction on the standard rate. Both London hotels featured here are available at the discounted rate only when booking through LondonTown.com. Visit the site for more information on England ‘s World Cup qualifiers, other upcoming events in the capital, and to see more discounted London hotels.

Forget this summer’s Ashes series between England and Australia for a moment because before that oh-so small rivalry plays out, the world’s best One Day cricketers from the eight top One Day International sides gather in England and Wales this June for the seventh and final ICC Champions Trophy. Four round-robin group games and one semi-final will be played at The Oval in south London during the competition, which runs between 6th and 23rd June 2013.

Second in importance only to the Cricket World Cup and with a $2 million prize kitty for the winners, the ICC Champions Trophy features England, Australia, New Zealand, Sri Lanka, India, Pakistan, South Africa and West Indies – the eight highest-ranked ODI teams. Initially held every two years, the 2013 event marks the first Champions Trophy since 2009, which was held in Pakistan and saw Australia take the spoils for a second consecutive tournament.

Holders Australia will put their main focus for the summer – the regaining of the Ashes – aside for a fortnight as they line up in Group A alongside England, Sri Lanka and New Zealand. Meanwhile, hot favourites Pakistan – the only team, other than hosts England, never to lift the trophy – are pitted in Group B alongside arch-rivals India, West Indies and South Africa.

The tournament gets under way at the SWALEC Stadium in Cardiff on Thursday 6th June as India face South Africa. The first game at The Oval takes place on Friday 7th June and sees Pakistan’s young but highly fancied side take on West Indies. Other group games at The Oval are India v West Indies (Tuesday 11th June), England’s second Group A game against Sri Lanka (Thursday 13th June) and Australia v Sri Lanka (Monday 17th June). Travellers arriving to the city from outside London to watch any of the ICC Champions Trophy can book their accommodation on the website LondonTown.com, where there’s a wide choice of hotels in London to suit all budgets and tastes.

Following the group stage, the two top teams from each group will progress to the semi-finals where the winner of Group A plays the runner-up of Group B (in the first semi-final) and the winner of Group B plays the runner-up of Group A (in the second semi-final). The first semi-final will take part at The Oval on Wednesday 19th June and could well feature those two sides looking to get a win before the competition ceases to exist, England and Pakistan. The final will be played at Edgbaston, Birmingham, on Sunday 23rd June.

The seventh and final ICC Champions Trophy – which is due to be replaced by the ICC World Test Championship in 2017 – is the tip of the iceberg when it comes to cricket in the capital this summer. England have already beaten New Zealand in their opening Test Match of the summer at Lord’s and the two sides will return to the same venue for the first of three ODIs on Friday 31st May. The Oval will host two evening Twenty20 games between England and New Zealand on Tuesday 25th June and Thursday 27th June. Then the Ashes will begin in earnest, with England facing Australia in the Second Test at Lord’s from Thursday 18th July and the Fifth Test at The Oval from Wednesday 21st August.

Wembley Stadium prepares for 90th anniversary

Back on 28th April 1923 an estimated 300,000 fans packed into the new Empire Stadium at Wembley to watch Bolton Wanderers beat West Ham United 2-0 in the FA Cup final. Ninety years and one expensive stadium rebuild later, the new Wembley Stadium will celebrate a landmark year with a whole host of important FA Cup matches and a second Champions League final in three years.

This weekend Championship side Millwall take on Premier League strugglers Wigan Athletic in the first of two back-to-back FA Cup semi-finals at Wembley on Saturday 13th April. This intriguing match will be a warm up for a fixture which many would have hoped to be the final, as super clubs Chelsea and Manchester City square up to one another in the second FA Cup semi-final on Sunday 14th April. The winner of both ties will return to the national football stadium to meet in the FA Cup final on 11th May.

More significant than Wembley Stadium’s 90th anniversary, the Football Association – the world’s oldest professional football body – celebrates its 150th anniversary this year. UEFA has joined in paying its respects by selecting Wembley as the venue for the 2013 Champions League final on 25th May. The fact that no English club has made it through to the quarter-finals of the world’s biggest knock-out competition was not in the script as Wembley becomes the first stadium to host the European Cup final twice in three years.

Travellers arriving from outside London to watch any of these key fixtures at Wembley Stadium this spring can conveniently book their accommodation on LondonTown.com, where there’s a wide range of London hotels. London’s sporting scene stretches far deeper than football, however, with more stadia and major sports venues than any other city in the world. London’s main sports venues are all featured in an extensive online feature on LondonTown.com that also looks at the key fixtures in the sporting calendar in 2013.

Two key dates for April are the London Marathon, which takes place on the famous 26.2-mile route around the city on Sunday 21st April, and the British Basketball Play-off Final at Wembley Arena on Sunday 28th April. Amongst the marathon’s 30,000 runners will be double Olympic gold medallist Mo Farah – although the long-distance track specialist will not make it all the way to the finish on The Mall for he intends to complete just the first half of the gruelling race.

Taking place on the same afternoon as the Champions League Final on Saturday 25th May is the Aviva Premiership Rugby Final at Twickenham Stadium. The biggest domestic club fixture of the rugby union season sees the two best sides in the country go head-to-head in a bruising winner-takes-all encounter. Also coming to Twickers in May is the Marriott London Sevens, on Saturday 11th and Sunday 12th May.

Days later, on 16th May, England’s cricketers play their first Test match of the season in the 1st Investec Test against New Zealand at Lord’s. Meanwhile, back at Wembley Stadium the Football league Play-off Finals and the Championship Play-off Final will be taking place either side of a Champions League final that everyone expects Barcelona FC to win.

All these sporting events – and many more – are featured on LondonTown.com’s extensive guide to London 2013, which can be downloaded on PDF or iPad for free.

Oxford vs Cambridge Goat Race returns to Spitalfields

On Sunday March 31st, one of London’s silliest annual spectacles will take place at Spitalfields City Farm in Shoreditch. The Oxford vs Cambridge Goat Race is returning for its sixth year, and offers a daft alternative to the famous boat race of (nearly) the same name.

Two goats go head to head in a surprisingly popular race that attracts the usual sideshows of food and market stalls, live music, beer tents and a bookie hut for the all-important wagers to be made.

In last year’s race, Cambridge ‘s Bramble the Golden Guernsey won for the fourth time. More than 1,700 fans turned out, and Oxford consoled themselves with a victory in the equally-ludicrous spin-off event, the Stoat Race. The fun starts at 2pm, with entry costing £5 for grown-ups and 50p for children.

Goat race fans looking for a cheap London hotel can find discounted accommodation at LondonTown.com, who’ve partnered with numerous hotels in the area to offer discounts on the weekend of the event.

Among the deals on offer, The Ibis London City – just 10 minutes walk from Spitalfields Market – is offering a 50% discount on selected double rooms, starting from £77 per night. The Ibis is also well situated for the active nightlife of Old Street and Hoxton.

Starting from £91 per night for a double room, the RE London Shoreditch Hotel is located on Hackney Road. The 50% discount offered through LondonTown.com gives guests a prime location in the heart of the city for an affordable price. The RE is less than 15 minutes walk from the Goat Race.

Rowing Season Kicks Off With Head of the River Race

This year’s Head of the River Race will take place on Saturday March 23rd. The first major rowing event on the 2013 calendar, the competition is effectively a warm-up for the annual Oxford v Cambridge Boat Race. The race follows the exact same course as its more famous counterpart, but in reverse, starting in Mortlake and ending up at Putney Bridge.

A total of 420 crews will traverse the 4.25 mile course through some of London’s most beautiful spots, taking in the most iconic stretches of the Thames along the way. Proceedings are expected to get underway around 11am. As usual, the pubs and restaurants that line the route will be full to the rafters, so travelling boat race fans are well-advised to book a table early if they want to witness the action.

While it may not have the cachet of the Oxbridge contest, the Head of the River Race still regularly attracts visitors from all over the world. This year, a number of hotels in London have teamed up with booking website LondonTown.com to offer significant discounts. Each of the participating hotels is dotted along the route.

Among the hotels in London taking part in the offer, the Jurys Inn Chelsea Hotel London, just off the King’s Road, is offering a 71% discount on their standard rate for double rooms. The discount brings the cost of a stay down to just £74.

The Holiday Inn Express Wandsworth is situated in Smuggler’s Way, less than 5 minutes walk from the riverside. When booking through LondonTown.com, accessible double rooms are now available with a 50% discount, making the cost of a night’s stay just £66.

For more details on the hotels in London featured here, and to find more discounted rooms coming up this year, LondonTown.com.
