It is held at a huge number of venues that are located all over north-west London, including a pirate castle, Jewish Cultural Centre and the Canal Café Theatre, which can be found above a pub in the picturesque environment of Little Venice. The Fringe’s headquarters was the Etcetera Theatre, a lovable theatre located above a bar in the bustling surroundings of Camden High Street.

The Fringe was created as a rival to the Edinburgh Fringe Festival, which takes place in Scotland in August, and some of the acts use Camden as a warm-up before heading north. It presents a great opportunity to see outstanding and memorable performances as well as explore the buzzing area of Camden, where the canal, market and lively high street ensure there is always something to see or do. The Chap Olympiad celebrates sporting ineptitude and buffoonery

Not so much a sporting occasion, rather a celebration of buffoonery and ineptitude, The Chap Olympiad returns on Saturday 13th July. Orchestrated by The Chap magazine for gentlemen and gentlewomen of good taste, it is a spiffing non-sporting event in Bedford Square Gardens. With the gardens centred on one of the best preserved set pieces of Georgian architecture in London, it is a fitting backdrop for such a distinguished occasion on the London events calendar.

Returning for its ninth year, attendants are invited to partake in a number of zany showdowns, including Umbrella Jousting, using bicycles and brollies instead of horses and lances; Tug of Moustache, two hirsute contestants are required to pluck a single hair from their opponent’s lip weasel; and Ironing Board Surfing, carried by their teammates, contestants must balance on an ironing board while holding a cocktail.

This year also welcomes a new raft of events to the programme such as the Parallel Bars, which involves contestants standing between two parallel cocktail bars and mixing two drinks simultaneously; Bounder Hunt, females are invited to hunt the bounder throughout the gardens using a large butterfly net, the first one to catch the cad gets to slap him with her handbag; and Beach Volleybowler, a game of beach volleyball with a bowler hat used as a ball and skimpy swimwear strictly prohibited. Contestants will be rewarded on panache rather than sporting prowess.

As well as the non-sporting events, the day also includes banjos, boaters, sandwiches and Pimm’s by the bucket load. The dress code is elegant finery, military wear, formal and dandy wear – absolutely no sportswear, except cricket whites, and no ghastly denim.

Find out about all the best events taking place in London over the coming months with LondonTown.com’sSummer 2013 in London article.

Distance Calculator Looks to Predict the Future

Distance Calculator a UK based travel site is aiming to predict the most requested routes in the UK and USA for September 2011. Using historical data from site visitors they aim to predict where most people are seeking to go, and give a glimpse into what look to be some interesting twists and turns for their visitors in the future.

Rob Watts the site’s administrator said “We are always looking to improve things and add value – By looking at raw data, we thought it would be good to look at the numbers to see what if any correlations existed, for example we looked at visits for September to October 2010 and found that the top requested page for UK visitors was the Manchester to Leeds page and for USA visitors we found it to be the Sioux Falls to Branson Missouri

Data from August 2011 was also compared with August 2010. Consistent patterns of site usage were sought; aspects like the most requested pages, similar queries and the like. Site visits were segmented into UK and US visitors overlain against what people searched for and viewed. Adjusting for general site popularity it was found that people from the US were generally looking for the same places in volume YOY. Miami, New York, Pittsburgh all featured highly in similar percentages. For the UK places requested were London, Manchester, Leeds, Dover, Paris and Calais.

“We’d expect to see the most populated places feature high, it’s no surprise there, neither is the fact that popular routes and distances featured high either. Some are plain to see, routes like London to Dover for instance, or Manchester to Leeds are all frequently travelled routes by people in numbers. We think there’s a story in the data and are looking to see how we can cross reference user visits with other data sources out there in the public domain, Twitter and Facebook for instance, events that kind of thing, through looking at these patterns we can improve the way we do things. Our aim is to pull in real time data signals that supplement the user experience. Through looking at the past we can hopefully get a better handle on what might happen in the future”.
