WorldSIM launches a new international SIM card that ends roaming charges for travellers worldwide

British Airways Launches New Routes To Haneda, Japan

British Airways has announced the launch of a new route to Haneda in Japan in a push to open up the domestic Japanese market to UK travellers.

The five-a-week service from Heathrow to Haneda will begin on February 19, 2011. The flight to Tokyo will be served by a Boeing 777, with a four-class configuration enabling customers to choose from First, Club World (business class), World Traveller Plus (premium economy) or World Traveller (economy). Prices will start from £721. Between February 19th and March 26th, the service will operate on Monday, Thursday, Friday, Saturday and Sunday.

The flight will depart from London Heathrow at 0800 local and arrive at Haneda at 0500 local time the following day. From March 27, 2011 the flights will arrive and depart from London Heathrow approximately one hour later and operate on the same days.

As well as offering an excellent domestic network, Haneda Airport is located near the business centre in Tokyo, which is ideal for premium customers.

The airline’s daily flight to Tokyo’s Narita airport will continue as before. The route is performing well and operating from two airports in Tokyo provides customers with greater flexibility. Narita International Airport is located 38 miles from central Tokyo. The airport is linked to the city by the Narita Express which takes customers to central Tokyo Station in 60 minutes.

British Airways Increases Flights To Grenada

British Airways has doubled the frequency of its flights to Grenada from one to two services a week with the launch of the new summer schedule on March 28, 2010. The airline currently operates a twice weekly service during its winter schedule but just one weekly flight during the lower season summer months. Hotels.com Makes Dublin Unrecognisable To A Third Of Irish People

New research from Hotels.com has shown that one in three Irish people fail to recognise their own capital city landscape without its iconic Ha’penny Bridge. An incredible 32% of Irish people were stumped by an image of their capital city when the memorable bridge was airbrushed out of the picture. While 68% weren’t fooled, 28% confused the image of Dublin with Amsterdam.

UK neighbours also struggled to recognise Dublin city’s landscape when asked to identify it without the Ha’penny Bridge. 75% of those surveyed in the UK thought Dublin was Amsterdam in the photo, with only 22% recognising the city without the landmark.

The landmark quiz also revealed that the Irish were quicker to recognise other cities, including London (88%), Paris (87%) and Sydney (76%) before their own home town, even when the key landmarks (Big Ben, the Eiffel Tower and the Opera House) in these cities were omitted from the view.

Hotels.com polled more than 10,000 travellers across the globe, to see just how many cities they recognised after a key landmark had been removed.

Nearly two thirds (63%) of Irish people have travelled to a city just to see an iconic landmark, according to the findings. Of the world’s most famous landmarks, the overall favourites were the Eiffel Tower in Paris (15%), while one in ten chose New York’s Empire State Building (10%) and San Francisco’s Golden Bridge (10%). These landmarks were followed in popularity by the Taj Mahal in India and The Vatican in Rome.

Despite the rise in the UK of the mini break, the research showed that it’s our neighbouring European cities that we know the least. Less than half (48%) of Irish travellers recognised Barcelona without Gaudi’s Sagrada Familia; 38% spotted Pisa without its Leaning Tower, and just 36% recognised Berlin without the Berlin TV Tower.

Ireland fared better when looking across the water to the UK however, with a greater number of Irish people recognising the London skyline (89%) without Big Ben than the Brits themselves. Only 83% of British people surveyed recognised their own capital without the iconic clock.

When it comes to long haul destinations, iconic landmarks seem to resonate well in the visual memory. The Hotels.com research showed that over three quarters of all Irish (76%) recognised Sydney without the Opera House and similarly Rio was identified correctly by 81% of travellers even after the Christ the Redeemer statue had been removed.

This quirky survey shows that it is the cities which have a famous and world renowned landmark, such as the Sydney Opera House or the Eiffel Tower that tend to resonate more in our minds.”

One of the more successful book shows in the world, this year’s event is expected to attract about 300 publishers from Germany and other German-speaking countries. Hotels.com Reports 100% Increase In Travel In One Generation

Hotels.com revealed the results of a new survey which shows that, in the course of a generation, the number of countries visited by an Irish under-16 year old has doubled. The survey was conducted by Hotels.com through Rollercoaster.ie, Ireland’s leading website for parents.

While a child today will have visited an average of six different countries by the age of 16, their parents had visited an average of three countries by the same age – a 100% increase in travel in just one generation.

While the rise in popularity of European city and beach breaks has contributed to children from Ireland venturing overseas, today’s under-16s are also heading further afield. The Hotels.com research showed that 24% of children have been to America by their sixteenth birthday, whilst 5% have been to destinations in Asia and Australia. According to the research, almost every child in Ireland (98%) has made a trip to a European destination by the time they reach 16.

Alison Couper, Director of Communications at Hotels.com, said: “Irish children today are better travelled than ever with almost every under-16 year old experiencing countries abroad according to our research.

“While a generation ago, one-in-four Irish people hadn’t ventured overseas by 16, now the same percentage of today’s youngsters have been to an average of eight countries by the time they reach their sixteenth birthday, which is a huge turnaround between parents and their own children.”

Parents’ desire for their children to experience a range of countries and cultures early is the driver behind their offspring’s travels. 86% of parents who responded to the Hotels.com survey said that experiencing different countries and cultures is important for their child’s education. Learning another language was cited as a key reason for taking children overseas by over half of the parents surveyed (51%).

Carol Buckley, Editor of Rollercoaster.ie commented: “It comes as no surprise to me that children of this generation are experiencing the world at a much faster pace than their parents ever could by the same age. Access to affordable travel over the last decade in particular has enabled families to reach destinations which would have been a rarity in their parents’ time. It’s also encouraging to see that parents appreciate the cultural benefits to their children of visiting foreign countries.”

The research found that parents consider their children seeing the world as so important that 79% of those surveyed let the decision on where to holiday be influenced by where the youngsters in the family would like to go.

Alison Couper concluded: “This survey shows that Irish parents are very keen for their child to experience travel and open their minds to new cultures and destinations. Our research suggests that despite cut backs in other areas, people see their family holiday as an important way of spending time together.”

Hotels.com Finds Brits Go Off Peak And On The Money

Hotels.com has revealed results from its latest survey which indicate that credit-crunched Britons are increasingly looking to book holidays out of season in a bid to avoid peak prices and get the most from their holiday budgets.

With some hotels slashing their prices by up to 70% for out-of-season stays, holiday-makers are taking advantage of off-peak prices to get more for their money, according to leading accommodation site, Hotels.com.

The research has shown that searches for low season stays in long-haul destinations such as South Asia, South America and the South Pacific have dramatically increased year-on-year, in some cases by as much as 200%.

Travellers to Queensland during the Antipodean winter month of June could save over two thirds (68%) on hotel accommodation while visitors to ‘God’s own country’, Kerala, can enjoy heavenly savings of nearly a third (31%) if they choose to travel during the rainy season. Similarly, visitors to Mexico are not letting a little rain put them off with searches for Cancun in July up by almost a half (45%).

Far from being fair-weather travellers, our findings show that if Brits are prepared to put up with a little uncertain weather, they can avoid peak prices and make significant savings.

“According to our Hotel Price Index, average hotel prices worldwide were down by 17% in the first half of 2009. Add out-of-season discounts into the mix, and travellers can enjoy some incredible savings.”
