The Sydney Rides Festival is due to take place from the 8th to the 16th of October 2011 and is ideal for all cycling enthusiasts.

The event is being organised by the local authorities in Sydney to celebrate and encourage those who want to cycle more frequently. During the event, there will be a number of cycling events including National Ride to Work Day and the Sydney Bike Film Festival.

Bob Dylan and Mark Knopfler perform in Glasgow from 8 to 9 October 2011

DirectRooms.com welcomes rock legends Bob Dylan and Mark Knopfler to Glasgow’s Braehead Arena on both the 8th and 9th October 2011.

These two musical giants will each be performing their own sets during this unforgettable concert, with Mark Knopfler (ex Dire Straits) starting off the concert. The pair first performed together back in 1979 and Mark Knopfler has since been invited by Bob Dylan to record a song on a forthcoming album, which is being produced in celebration of the 50th anniversary of Amnesty International and Bob Dylan’s 70th birthday. Mark Knopfler also produced Dylan’s Infidels album. This legendary duo is only playing six concerts for their UK tour.

Dresden hosts First World Chess Games for the Disabled in October 2011

DirectRooms.com welcomes the first World Chess Games for the Disabled to Dresden from the 24 October until 30th October 2011.

Organised by the ZMDI Sczachfestival Dresden e V, this is the first World Chess Games tournament for the disabled. The event is to be run on a biennial basis and players’ chess associations will be responsible for player selection. Each team participating in the chess games will consist of four players.

There are three categories to be entered, Braille, deaf and physically disabled and the winner of each category will be eligible for gold, silver or bronze medals. There is also a 3,000 Euro prize fund. The World Chess Games for the Disabled also have a team ranking and the winner of that category will be based on the individual points won by each team player.

The competition will be held at the Ramada Hotel in Dresden. Since this is an international event, demand for hotel accommodation will be high and participants and their carers are advised to book into a Dresden city centre hotel to avoid disappointment. The deadline for registration is 16th September and entry costs E40.

Dresden is in the east of Germany and is the capital of the province of Saxony. The city boasts good public transport links across the city as well as excellent national and international, rail, car and air infrastructure. Beirut hosts the 5th Pan Arab Paediatric Nephrology Association Meeting in October 2011

Tennis legends showdown comes to Chengdu between 27 and 30 October 2011

DirectRooms.com reveals that an all star line up of tennis’ greatest former players are due to play in a special tournament in Chengdu.

The Chengdu Open 2011 will see all time greats such as world number one Pete Sampras playing against title winners Mark Philippoussis and Carlos Moya. The Open is part of the ATP Champions Tour that sees ex tennis champions returning to the court again to relive some epic encounters.

One such encounter will be the games between Pete Sampras and Marat Safin who met each other several times during their careers. Safin just managed to get the upper hand on Sampras but Pete will be looking to reduce that deficit and also make up for missing out on being crowned champion having, being beaten by Greg Rusedski in last year’s final.

Other stars also on the tour are Thomas Enqvist, Younes El Aynaoui, Paradorn Srichapan and Wayne Ferreira. Collectively all the players taking part have racked up 154 ATP titles and more than $100 million in prize money.

Fans hoping to catch the games can see them at the Sichuan International Tennis Centre from 27th to 30th October 2011. All the games will be on hard court and as a special feature this year local amateur Chinese players are being invited to play with the champions as part of some special doubles matches.

Scooter riders attend The Cross Egypt Challenge between 14 and 22 October 2011

DirectRooms.com reveals that a unique tour of Egypt will see participants embarking on a special journey to cross the country entirely by scooter.

The Cross Egypt Challenge is inviting scooter owners to step up for a nine day endurance ride that will stretch the length of Egypt and take in some of the country’s most historical sites.

Riders will be in the saddle for 1,700km from 14th to 22nd October 2011, starting by the Mediterranean in northern Egypt and working their way down to the south to Abu Simbel temple. The start actually begins at the Bibliotheca Alexandrina and then it’s a four hour ride to Cairo and an overnight stop at a Cairo City Centre hotel. Early the next day the team then sets off past the pyramids and on to the famous Suez Canal.

The rest of the route takes in Neuwebaa, Dahab and Sharm El Sheikh as well as a ferry crossing to Hurghada. The next section is in the ancient city of Luxor where riders will be able to visit the huge collection of temples and cruise down past the sphinxes before stopping in front of Karnak temple.

The Folk Festival return to Stratford during 2 to 4 September 2011

DirectRooms.com welcomes the return of the Folk Festival to Stratford upon Avon. The Stratford upon Avon Folk Festival is one of the oldest such events in the UK and this year, after an absence of 50 years, the Festival is set to return to Stratford from 2nd September to 4th September.

Bikers compete Halo British Downhill Series Rd 5 in Fort William from 10 to 11 September 2011

DirectRooms.com can confirm that the 2011 ‘Halo’ British Mountain Biking Championships will be held at Fort William from the 10th to the 11th of September 2011.

The Fort William course has been described as the ’toughest on the World Cup circuit’ and the race only lasts between five and seven minutes. The riders start at an altitude of 655 metres and carry on down to 100 metres, finishing at the Ben Nevis mountain range car park. Fort William is the nearest town to the circuit and visitors can find many Fort William hotels in the town, which will be convenient for all tastes and ages.

Downhill mountain biking competitions often use ski resorts in the summer, as the terrain is ideal for the sport. The ‘Halo’ series is one of the most prestigious series of races in the world; the teams practice on the Saturday and the actual race day is Sunday. Riders of all ages are welcome.

The 2nd International Moroccan Physics Conference take place from 26 to 28 September 2011

DirectRooms.com can confirm that the second International Conference on Physics and Technology of Reactors and Applications will take place in Fez between the 26th and 28th of September 2011.

Known as PHYTRA, the first such conference took place in Marrakech in 2007. The conference is to be held in the Jnan Palace hotel in Fez, with good transport links to the nearby airport, Fez-Saiss, which is only seven miles away from the venue.

As a modern tourist city there are many hotels in Fez to choose from. The city is a UNESCO World Heritage site and away from the conference there are many beautiful monuments, mosques and other buildings to see. Fez was founded in 808 and the city is the second largest in Morocco. The world’s oldest university is based in the city, which was established in AD 859.

Jordan to host World Economic Forum between 21 to 23 October 2011

The 7th Cologne Floorball Festival to be held from 3 to 4 September 2011

DirectRooms.com can announce that the 7th Cologne Floorball Festival is to take place on the 3rd and 4th of September 2011.

The 7th Cologne Floorball Festival tournament will be made up of 16 teams divided into four groups. Teams already signed up to take part in the tournament include Germany, Switzerland, France, Sweden (where the game originated) and Finland. The central governing body, the IFF, hopes that the growing interest in the game and the many countries (currently, 80) that play floorball will lead to the sport being included in the 2020 Olympics.

The festival will take place at the Nordhallen in Cologne’s Sportspark, and the arena is in close proximity to a great many cheap Cologne hotels.

Floorball was developed in the 1970s. The game is related to ice hockey, although it is played indoor, and has a rapidly growing international fan base. The stick used by players is shorter than that used in ice hockey, but just as lethal.

Transport links within the city are excellent, and travellers will be able to choose from the underground, trams, buses and ferries for their method of transport. Biarritz Dance Festival Take Place from 9 to 18 September 2011

Ticket prices for the various performances offered at this festival will vary. There is a general ticket costing €14, but some of the performances held in the theatre venues will cost more.
