Radisson Blu Royal Hotel First Hotel In Brussels To Be Awarded The Green Key

The Radisson Blu Royal Hotel, Brussels, has become the first hotel in the city to gain the Green Key for its huge environmental efforts.

The Green Key is an international and worldwide available eco-label awarded to leisure organisations and facilities. It demands the fulfilment of a list of environmental requirements containing a number of criteria.

Besides environmental demands, such as controlling the production of waste and the use of water and electricity, the criteria include also demands on policy, action plans, environmental education and communication.

Apart from the international baseline criteria each country also adds 20% of national criteria taking into account legislation, infrastructure, policies, and climate of the country to ensure adjustment to national and cultural characteristics.

With the obtainment of the Green Key plus past awards and actions the Radisson Blu Royal Hotel demonstrates to the industry that a large-scale hotel can maintain and indeed enhance its commercial performance through ensuring environmental sustainability as a main factor of its ethos and operations.

Taking responsibility for the environment and the local community plays an important role for the Radisson Blu Royal Hotel and the Rezidor Hotel Group in general. Just like the hotels in Brussels, all properties take part in a dedicated Responsible Business programme with each hotel having a unique action plan covering areas such as community outreach, environmental improvement, employee well-being and health and safety. The programme has been in place since 2001 and is one of the strongest commitments to reducing the environmental impact of hotels in the hospitality industry.

Kuoni Survey Reveals Why Summer Holidays Lead To Make-Up Or Break-Up

Kuoni, commissioned survey reveals why 74% of UK households agree that holidays can change the course of our relationships.

27 million Brits are about to take their summer breaks and for many the next few months will be a pivotal time in their lives as holidays are one of the most powerful ways to help couples decide if they are in the right relationship.

According to a new survey by luxury family holidays operator, Kuoni Travel, being with a loved one 24/7 can help couples get reacquainted, with some even decide to marry (54%), start a family (46%) or move in together (42%). However a staggering 59% decide to divorce or separate after their holiday experience.

Leading relationship councillor, Christine Webber, commented:

“It’s certainly true that you don’t know someone till you’ve been on holiday with them. As a therapist more people come to see me for the first time after their holiday than at any other time of the year. And it’s always about their relationship.

“The good news is that for couples who are happy together a holiday is a marvellous opportunity to reconnect. Sharing much more intimacy than at home can really boost levels of oxytocin, which is the hormone that is responsible for us feeling bonded and content. Years ago, I surveyed a large group of women about when they felt sexiest and 96% of them told me that they felt most fruity on holiday. Men take note.

Hole To Rock Le Bataclan In Paris

Hole are set to bring their raucous stage show to Paris’ Le Bataclan venue next month.

The band, fronted by Kurt Cobain’s ex-wife Courtney Love, have endured a turbulent career. They split up back in 2002 after relations broke down between Love and Eric Erlandson, the two remaining founder members of the band.

Much to the joy of their legions of fans, the group are now back on the road, having reformed last year with a number of new recruits. These include Micko Larkin, the former guitarist for now-defunct English four-piece Larrikin Love.

Love and her fellow band-mates will be coming to the French capital on August 25th 2010 to play what will be their only show in France for the foreseeable future.

Paris hotel guests who step out to watch the gig should prepare for a good night, as Hole should be at the top of their game following appearances at the Summer Sonic Festival in Tokyo and Osaka, Japan.

They are likely to hope that the band play some of their past hits, such as Celebrity Skin, along with material from their latest album, Nobody’s Daughter.

Tickets for the show cost €45 (£38), while guests at Paris hotels should look to arrive at Le Bataclan prior to the doors opening at 20:00 local time.

National Trust Opens Outdoors Shop As New Gateway To Cheddar Gorge Countryside

The first ever National Trust centre and shop for the outdoors has opened in Cheddar Gorge in Somerset, providing visitors with information to help them explore the surrounding Somerset countryside.

With not a tea towel or wooden duck in sight, visitors will be able to buy from a new outdoors product range, including walking socks and Ordnance Survey maps, in what will be a major change to the usual National Trust shopping experience.

More than half-a-million people a year take a day out in Somerset and visit Cheddar Gorge, part of the reason why this location was chosen as the first centre of its type to highlight the work of the National Trust in the outdoors.

Andy Mayled, National Trust General Manager for the Somerset Countryside, said: “We won’t be selling the tea towels and lavender bags that you’d normally expect to find in a Trust shop.

“Our work in Cheddar Gorge is all about giving people access to the open countryside and this shop will sell the things needed to help people get out into the great outdoors. The new centre will help us to tell the story of the National Trust’s work in Cheddar Gorge, of which we own half, and the wider Somerset countryside sites that we manage from Exmoor to Glastonbury Tor.”

Paris Hosts William Kentridge Display

Travellers heading down to Paris’ Le Louvre art space can see a new exhibition of William Kentridge’s work, which is on show until August 30th.

Paris hotels guests who have a particular curiosity regarding ancient Egypt may find the exhibit fascinating, since this is the theme of the artist’s creations on display.

This exhibition has been organised to coincide with the retrospective of his work taking place at Paris’ Jeu de Paume art space on place de la Concorde.

Although many fans may only be aware of Kentridge’s pastel and charcoal drawings or animated films, they should know that he also likes to work with collage, sculpture and engravings.

“The invitation extended by the Louvre provides an opportunity for the artist to re-explore the world of ancient Egypt, but also to delve into the Napoleonic campaigns of the late 18th century,” remarked the organisers.

Entrance to the display is included in the price of a normal ticket for Le Louvre, which costs €9 (£7.50).
