2012 has been a busy year for Stephens, who had ‘The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time’, ‘Morning’, ‘A Doll’s House’ and ‘Three Kingdoms’ all taking to the stage last year.

Talking of his play ‘Port’, Stephens acknowledged its roots in his own experiences growing up in the city, as well as taking material form numerous interviews conducted with women who had lived there all their lives.

An immersive opera experience at London’s Docklands

A quiet dock in London’s borough of Tower Hamlets might be the last place you’d associate with classic Italian opera, but the team behind are looking to change all that, with another venture into site-specific, immersive opera.

Following great successes of Puccini’s La Boheme and Purcell’s Dido and Aeneas, both performed in the Old Vic Tunnels beneath Waterloo station, January 2013 sees Silent Opera return with its new project: Monteverdi’s L’Orfeo, performed at Trinity Buoy Wharf in East London.

Telling the tragic story of Orpheus, who twice loses his beloved wife Eurydice, the opera tells of his journey to the underworld to attempt to save her from death.

Silent Opera, much like the silent disco concept, allows audience members to don a pair of wireless headphones, allowing them to wander freely through the performance space and thereby create their own immersive theatre experience.

Added innovations this year include the chance for one audience member per night to choose between two different endings. And for an additional £10 on 23rd and 25th of January, tickets will include a return boat ride from a pier in central London.

Opera and silent opera fans who want to travel up to the city for the event can find excellent deals on London hotels through LondonTown.com. Save 68% on the Holiday Inn Express London Limehouse, with doubles starting at £70.

Alternatively try the luxury 5* Town Hall Hotel &Apartments in Bethnal Green for a special treat, coming in at £174 for the night of the 23 rd January.

Rowan Atkinson to return to West End theatre

Mr Bean and Jonny English star Rowan Atkinson is to return to the London stage with a role in Quartermaine’s Terms , a tragicomic play written by Simon Gray.

Set in a 1960s English language school, it tells a moving account of several years in the lives of a seven teachers, with the main focus on St John Quartermaine, an agreeable but hopeless teacher played by Atkinson, whose rubbery features and physical comedy have oft made him a favourite pathetic comic hero.

According to LondonTown.com, the quintessentially British drama takes a comical yet serious view at the teachers’ stories and their tendency to treat Quartermaine as an agony uncle. However, despite being part of the furniture, his job is put under threat after the arrival of a new school Principal.

Wyndhams Theatre, Soho, is one of the West End’s best-loved theatre spaces. Located on Charing Cross Road, it was opened on 16 th November 1899. More recently it was home to the hugely acclaimed West End run of Alan Bennet’s The History Boys.

West End theatre fans and Rowan Atkinson followers can look up great deals on hotels in London through LondonTown.com, the number one website for London, which sources great info and ideas on events, accommodation and eating and drinking.

During the run of Quartermaine’s Terms , from 23 rd January to 13 th April, there are many bargains to be had on West End hotels. Stay a short walk from the Wyndhams on the first weekend of February, with doubles at the 4* Trafalgar Hotel at £138 – a discount of 76%.

Or go 5* for £183 for a double, just a stone’s throw from the theatre, at the Hampshire Radisson Blu Edwardian, located right on the corner of Leicester Square and Charing Cross Road.

Parents with toddlers and babies will be able to travel light to safe and relaxing family holidays this summer thanks to the Tots Essential Kit Guarantee, a new initiative launched today by award-winning family travel specialists Tots To Travel.

Instead of struggling to fit all the essential items little ones need into their luggage, and hauling it through customs on a fleet of baggage trolleys, parents can be sure of finding it all waiting for them at their holiday home.

Tots To Travel are the only company to offer this Tots Essential Kit Guarantee for all of their family holidays which covers over 20 items from pool safety and bulky furniture such as cots, high chairs and stair gates, to often overlooked essentials such as blackout blinds and a range of toys and easily forgotten items like night lights and a hand-held blender.

Tots To Travel owner Wendy Shand said: “It’s a real challenge for new parents trying to get all the kit they need to keep their baby safe and happy into their luggage. There are so many essential items from changing mats to travel cots, sterilisers and baby monitors that we take for granted at home.

“We have hundreds of calls and emails from anxious parents worried they won’t be able to take family holidays if they can’t be sure they have all these things. So we have compiled a list of the essential items and can now guarantee our holiday homes have all of them.”

Tots To Travel specialises in stylish, safe, fun holiday villas for the under fives and their families, and t he Tots Essential Kit Guarantee is another important element in their mission to ensure relaxing family holidays from start to finish.

They offer holiday homes from cottages to chateaux, and take extensive steps to ensure each is suitable. All properties are inspected and vetted by a special team of agents using a system developed with the Child Accident Prevention Trust to ensure they are all safe and genuinely family-friendly.

Tots To Travel also offer a free holiday planner pack . And t here is also a vast array of useful information on their website, on everything from “How far is the beach?” to “Where is the nearest hospital or supermarket?”.

The full Tots To Travel kit guarantee covers:

  • Pool barriers (enclosed by fence, hard cover or net)
  • At least one cot that meets EU standards
  • Good supply of cot linen
  • At least one high chair

  • Blackout blinds/curtains/shutters in child bedrooms
  • Children’s books, indoor and outdoor toys
  • DVD player and children’s DVDs
  • Microwave
  • Night light in children’s rooms

Unsurprisingly, pool safety comes top of the list, as Wendy Shand, a mother of three, set up the company after her little boy fell into an unenclosed swimming pool on a family holiday. That terrible accident was a turning point which led her to set up her holiday company to ensure safe family holidays for under 5s.

She said: “It felt there had to be a safer and more enjoyable way to holiday with small children. More to the point there must be plenty of parents just like me who need a safe, family-friendly holiday more than ever before.”

When Wendy couldn’t find a family-friendly holiday company to suit her needs, she decided to start her own – and quickly found its services in demand. “There’s something terribly motivating about having children. You suddenly have the drive to make life as you want it to be, rather than living by somebody else’s rules,” she said.

Tots To Travel is now a multi-award winning company, which Wendy runs with husband Rob, a former RAF fighter pilot.

The company’s success has been recognised with a range of prestigious awards including the Cisco Customer Kings Award for outstanding customer service (2010) and Woman of the Year Award from the Loved By Parents website (2011).

Kris Martin to Exhibit at White Cube

Belgian conceptual artist Kris Martin is to have a new exhibition of his work at London’s White Cube gallery in Mason’s Yard. Martin’s show is set to run from January 18th until March 16th.

Martin’s sculptural work has been exhibited at the Saatchi Gallery, and in 2007 he brought the Frieze art fair to a standstill when he called for a minute’s silence to draw the crowd’s attention to the present moment. This move was typical of Martin’s conceptual work, in which he uses time as a framework within which he asks questions about chance, existence and desire.

Jay Jopling’s White Cube has been the spiritual home of the 90s Young British Artists movement from the outset. At the turn of the 21st Century, White Cube opened a new space on Hoxton Square however, at the heart of the YBA scene. The Hoxton Square gallery closed at the end of last year, and Kris Martin’s new exhibition is being shown at the Mason’s Yard space in St. James’s.

To coincide with the show, LondonTown.com has announced discounted rates on a number of hotels in London, all within easy walking distance of White Cube. The discounts are available when booking now through the website.

Among the deals on offer, Le Meridien Piccadilly is giving a 35% discount on double rooms, bringing the cost down to £249 per night. Le Meridien is, like most hotels in the area, a luxury, old English establishment and is less than five minutes walk from White Cube.

St. James’s Hotel & Club London on Park Place – also one of the most luxurious hotels in London – is offering double rooms from £324 – a 33% discount on the standard nightly rate. The hotel is also within five minutes walk of White Cube.

Visit LondonTown.com for more discounted hotels in London, and for more information on Kris Martin’s upcoming exhibition at White Cube.

Epic Onegin back at the Royal Opera House in 2013

One of the most popular Russian novels of all time, which has been endlessly adapted for stage, film, opera and dance, once again finds itself on the London stage in 2013.

Onegin, based on Alexander Pushkin’s novel of the same name, tells the story of a young gallant Eugene Onegin and his relationships with Tatyana, her sister Olga and Olga’s fiancé. John Cranko, who first create dance to accompany Tchaikovsky’s opera of the same name in 1952, is the choreographer responsible for the ballet’s mixture of styles and emotions.

First created for the Stuttgart Ballet in 1965, Cranko’s piece uses a wide palette of powerful duets and an eclectic range of dance forms, such as folk, modern, ballroom and acrobatic to showcase the dramatically changing relationships between the four leads.

This new version will be staged at the magnificent Royal Opera House in Covent Garden, a building which has played its role as a key host to classical music stars and dancers since 1858. Whilst there have been many architectural redevelopments, the site retains its sense of grandeur.

Ballet fans making a special trip to the capital for the event can take a look atLondonTown.com for excellent deals and discounts on London hotels.

The Waldorf Hilton Hotel London has 67% off on Feb 1st, with double rooms at the 5* luxury hotel from £140. There’s also 64% off the Radisson Blu Edwardian on Mercer Street, a short walk from Onegin, with doubles from £127.

Southbank Centre Takes Year-Long Look at 20th Century Music

On January 19th, The Southbank Centre embarks on one of its most ambitious classical music projects to date. ‘The Rest is Noise’ takes a chronological look at 20 th Century music, deploying the talents of a wide variety of celebrated musicians, film-makers, public speakers, music historians and performers.

The London Philharmonic forms the backbone of each show. More than thirty concerts will be performed over the course of the year. The idea is based on the 2007 book of the same title, written by Alex Ross, which told the story of the most important musical, political and social events of the 20th Century.

Artistic Director Jude Kelly describes the festival as a way to view music “through the prism of history, with its revolutions and counter-revolutions, its major moral and philosophical upheavals around race, gender, faith, political credo and pacifism, and its new relationship to technology and artistic democracy.”

The city’s top events and accommodation website is getting in on the act by offering reduced rates on hotels in London close to the Southbank Centre. Spanning the entirety of the year-long event, LondonTown.com is offering discounted rooms at hotels in London within walking distance of the Southbank Centre.

One of the deals on offer is the Charing Cross Guoman Hotel, which is offering a 44% discount on executive double rooms. The discounted rate brings the cost down to £195 per night. Situated on the famous Strand stretch of London, The Guoman is less than ten minutes walk from the Southbank Centre.
