Hyatt 48 Lex Launches New Package “Pets in the City”

Dread saying good-bye to Fido? The New “Pets in the City” package at the newly-built Hyatt 48 Lex allows guests to travel in style with their Dogs. “Pets in the City” showcases the hotel’s residential-feel and is a direct response to guest requests during the hotel’s inaugural year to allow four-legged companions to check-in.

“Since our opening in late-2011, we have discussed becoming a Dog-Friendly property” says Mark Wagner, General Manager of the hotel. “Our guests were consistently asking us to allow their small dogs in – for both leisure and business trips. After we bent the rules a bit during Hurricane-Sandy, we decided to change our policy once and for-all.”

Based upon availability, guests may enjoy the Pets in the City package starting February 1, 2013 as an ongoing policy (note there is a maximum number of rooms designated as dog-friendly). Pampered pooches will be welcomed with a doggie-bed, feeding bowl, and special treat at check-in. Guests are limited to no more than 2 dogs per suite, dogs must not exceed 35 lbs and of course, all dogs must be housebroken. The package includes a non-refundable cleaning fee of $50 per day. Brits Miss Their Pets More Than Family Members When On Holiday

This has been connected to a recent survey conducted by, which discovered that two in five of us Brits take our pets on holiday with us. Jumeirah Release Rescued Turtles

Jumeirah Hotels & Resorts along with The Dubai Turtle Rehabilitation project has announced the successful return of 25 turtles back to the wild in Dubai on June the 8th 2010.

The 25 lucky turtles which were released back to their natural habitat consisted of 2 Green Chelonia Mydas turtles and 23 critically endangered Hawksbill Eretmochelys Imbricata turtles.

The Dubai Turtle Rehabilitation project evolved from a small-time operation to help with the occasional turtle stranding, but in 2009 alone over 68 turtles passed through the project and were released back into the sea. The latest turtles received several months of rehabilitation at Burj Al Arab and Madinat Jumeirah to ensure they were healthy prior to their release.

An ever-increasing local awareness of The Dubai Turtle Rehabilitation project has led to progressively more and more turtles being received each year, especially the months from January through to April, when local waters can be down to 16C. Many of the turtles which pass through the project’s hands are due to the efforts of Emirates Marine Environmental Group and Dubai Municipality’s Environment Section, as well as contributions from individuals.

All the turtles that were released back into the wild have been fitted with flipper tags to help identify them. Moonlight, a 31 kilo Green turtle has also been fitted with a satellite tag sponsored by Burj Al Arab, and was named by the students of Year 1 at Dubai English Speaking School after winning the project’s naming competition.

Readers of Global Traveler magazine are seen as American premium travellers, clocking up an average of 32 round-trip flights a year, with 96 percent travelling in first or business class regularly. Over 25,000 readers responded to this year’s survey.

Meanwhile, business travellers from Germany, Austria and Switzerland also recognised Jumeirah’s excellence with the group winning the title of the Best Hotel Group in the Middle East for the second year in a row and the Best Hotel in the Middle East for the Jumeirah Beach Hotel, keeping its title for a third consecutive year.

The two awards were handed to Ms Dagmar Woodward, General Manager of Jumeirah Frankfurt, which will open in September 2010, during a ceremony held in Frankfurt and organised by the German edition of Business Traveller magazine.

The Definitive Video Guide To Pet Travel

Stena Line, the leading ferry operator, is looking to woo pet owners with a brand-new step-by-step video guide on how to safely take pets on holiday by ferry to Holland, following a 13% year-on-year increase in the transportation of travellers’ pets on its North Sea route.

The short guide which appears on Stena Line’s website explains the legal and practical requirements of taking pets to Holland and then back into the UK.

Featuring dog owner Jason Towler and his Jack Russell Eddie, the video demystifies the government’s Pet Travel Scheme – or PETS for short – and explains the five prerequisites of taking a pet to Holland. Defra developed the scheme in 2000 to enable pets – specifically dogs, cats and ferrets – to re-enter Britain without quarantine.

Lars Olsson, Stena Line’s commercial manager for travel on the North Sea, said: “Having noted the increasing importance to our passengers of bringing their pets, Stena Line recognised the need for a simple guide which visually sets out the official governmental and logistical requirements of taking a pet dog or cat abroad.”

Stena Line has always catered for pet owners, offering onboard kennels and an area where the pets can walk. Its website also includes exclusive pet travel tips by animal behaviour specialist Dr Roger Mugford.

Olsson added: “We’re confident that the video format of the new guide and its step-by-step depiction of the procedure will help pet owners who were unsure of the process or even unaware of the possibility of taking pets to the Netherlands, either by ferry or at all. We’re also aware that it’s the required timeframe that confuses some pet owners, so we’ve made clear the simple but necessary preparation and timings that avoids any problems upon re-entry into the UK.”

The Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs has simplified the process within the past few years and promoted its PETS travel scheme this summer. Stena Line’s guide aims to complement this and increase public awareness, increasing the growing trend for pets crossing the North Sea for a holiday.

Best Western Hotels, Britain’s Biggest Independent Hotel Group, Has Gone To The Dogs – And It Couldn’t Be Happier About It

Tails are wagging with glee at Best Western Hotels across the UK as the group opens its doors with a fanfare of new features being introduced for man’s best friend in order to cope with the 150% increase in dog bookings seen over the past year.

Dogs at several hotels now have their own room service – tentatively titled ‘Groom’ Service – and even enjoy luxury fine dining f r o m their own in-house canine-menu, including delicious items like specially sourced marrow bone and select cuts of free range chicken and rump steak.

Best Western hotels have long been popular with dog owners and their pampered pooches but in the last 12 months the group has seen a huge increase in the number of dog owners seeking suitable accommodation for themselves and their loyal four-legged friends. As a result several hotels within the group, which has won awards for its Pet Friendliness, devised a number of canine-centric new features designed to make guest pooches feel even more pampered.

One of these is the inclusion of special dog-beds, available on request. Owners can now book a twin room with a bed for themselves and a custom doggy-divan for their canine companion. Doggie treats on the pillow and walks specially devised for those with short, medium and long legs are another special feature at the Best Western Monkbar hotel in York.

Pet friendly hotels, are dedicating rooms specifically for guests with dogs and other rooms which are never used to accommodate pets, plus investing in the latest vacuum cleaners designed specifically to cope with pet hairs. For example, one Leeds hotel, the Best Western Dower House, has four rooms with direct access to the hotel gardens.

June Nelsey, general manager of the Best Western Monkbar Hotel, said: “Many people cherish their pets as part of the family, as dog owners ourselves we understand that people don’t like to leave their pets at home and want their pet to have as good experience as they do while away.

“We even offer our seven year old Labrador to guests who miss their own pet and want a dog to walk. He has even had dog chews sent f r o m Australia and doggie gifts f r o m America to say thanks for a great holiday.”

Clarissa Baldwin, Chief Executive of Dogs Trust, said: “Dogs love a change of scenery just like anyone else so we are very pleased that dog-owners are increasingly choosing to holiday with their canine chums. Boarding kennels are not necessarily ideal for every pet and some, like the very old, very timid, or animals that have spent time in a Rehoming Centre may find it a stressful experience and, where possible, would be far happier joining you on your break.”

Best Western spokesman, Chris Webb, added: “There’s been a huge uptake of rooms by dog owners and their pets in the last 12 months. In order to accommodate this increase we are investing in lots of new features to make sure our guests, and their four-legged best friends, are well catered for. We want to make sure that the pooches tails are wagging as much at our hotels as they do at home.”
