LAN Airlines Monthly Statistics Report For November 2009

LAN Airlines S.A. and its subsidiaries, (‘LAN’ or ‘the Company’) (NYSE:LFL / IPSA: LAN), one of the leading airlines in Latin America, has reported its preliminary monthly traffic statistics and punctuality indicators for November 2009.

LAN Airlines system passenger traffic for November increased 13.3% as capacity rose 8.8%. As a result, the Company’s load factor increased 3.2 points to 79.5%. International passenger traffic accounted for approximately 69% of total passenger traffic.

Domestic passenger traffic in Chile, Argentina, Peru and Ecuador rose 9.0% as capacity increased 7.1%. As a consequence, the domestic load factor for the month increased 1.4 points to 79.4%.

International passenger traffic for November rose 15.4% as capacity increased 9.5%. Accordingly, the international passenger load factor for the month increased 4.0 points to 79.6%. International capacity was mainly driven by an increase in operations on routes to the Unites States and Europe, as well as on certain regional routes.

During the month of November cargo traffic increased 9.9%. This increase was mainly due to the recovery in import and export markets in Latin America, as well as increased operations to Europe. In line with the higher demand, capacity grew 4.8%. As a result, the cargo load factor rose 3.4 points reaching 74.1%.

During November, 88.3% of the Company’s total flights left on time based on a fifteen-minute standard (all departures leaving within fifteen minutes of the scheduled departure time are considered as “on-time”). This represented a decrease of 3.7 points compared to November 2008.

Currently, LAN Airlines and its affiliates operate one of the most modern fleets in the world, with 84 passenger aircraft, and its cargo subsidiary, LAN CARGO and its respective cargo affiliates, have a fleet of 11 dedicated freighters. The company recently completed its short haul fleet renovation process by acquiring new aircraft from the Airbus A320 family, enabling LAN to improve its efficiency and to reduce significantly its CO2 emissions. The fleet renovation is part of the company’s commitment to the protection of the environment.

LAN Publishes Preliminary Statistics For September 2009

System passenger traffic for September increased 11.9% as capacity rose 9.3%. As a result, the Company’s load factor increased 1.8 points to 78.8%. International passenger traffic accounted for approximately 71% of total passenger traffic.

Domestic passenger traffic in Chile, Argentina, Peru and Ecuador rose 17.5% as capacity increased 15.0%. As a consequence, the domestic load factor for the month increased 1.6 points to 77.0%. International passenger traffic for September rose 9.8% as capacity increased 7.1%. Accordingly, the international passenger load factor for the month increased 1.9 points to 79.6%. International capacity was mainly driven by an increase in operations on routes to Europe and the South Pacific, partially offset by a decrease on certain regional routes.

In line with the global decrease in the import and export markets, during the month of September cargo traffic decreased 8.0%. This decrease was mainly due to the slowdown in import and export markets in Latin America, as well as the reduction of salmon exports from Chile. In line with the decrease in demand, capacity fell 7.0%, mainly through the reduction of ACMI leases. The cargo load factor reached its highest level this year at 69.8%.

During September, 90.8% of the Company’s total flights left on time based on a fifteen-minute standard (all departures leaving within fifteen minutes of the scheduled departure time are considered as “on-time”). This represented an increase of 2.1 points compared to September 2008.

Inaugural Gulf Air Flight Arrives In Baghdad

National carrier Gulf Air has flown its inaugural flight to Baghdad. The flight, on 1 September 2009, marked the start of a new five-time weekly service the carrier is operating to the Iraqi capital.

Gulf Air chief executive officer Mr Samer Majali led a delegation of senior Gulf Air executives, board members as well as government, business, diplomatic and media representatives on the maiden voyage, including Iraq’s Ambassador to Bahrain, His Excellency, Mr Ghassan Mohsen Hussain and Bahrain’s Ambassador to Iraq, His Excellency, Mr Salah Al Malki.

On arriving at Baghdad International Airport, Gulf Air CEO Samer Majali addressed guests and media saying: “This is a great milestone for a new, forward-looking Gulf Air. We were the first and only full-service GCC carrier to operate into Baghdad back in 1976 and today we reaffirm that leadership position. I am pleased to announce to you here today in Iraq of our plans to extend our network into the country even further. My plan is that we will soon operate to a total of five destinations in Iraq: Baghdad; Najaf; Erbil; Basra and Solamnia. Our services to Najaf and Erbil will commence as soon as 15 September.”

“Our decision to resume flights to Iraq comes as the country continues to make great progress in rebuilding, following years of unrest. We are proud to be serving Iraq once again offering a direct service from our home hub in Bahrain and excellent connections from Europe. Emirates Has Scored A Double As Two Of Its A380 Super Jumbos Jetted Off From Dubai To The Opposite Ends Of The Globe, Marking The Aviation World’s First A380 Commercial Services To Bangkok And Toronto

The launch of the Emirates A380 daily flights to Bangkok and thrice weekly to Toronto – signals a new era of luxury air travel to Thailand and Canada, and represents another milestone in the airline’s A380 schedule.

The new Emirates A380 to Bangkok took off f r o m Emirates’ new home, Terminal 3 at Dubai International Airport, carrying 488 passengers, and the landed to a festive welcome by the Thai government at Suvarnabhumi International Airport. Meanwhile the Emirates A380 to Toronto departed Dubai with 458 passengers and was the first commercial A380 jet to touch down on Canadian soil.

Senior management f r o m Emirates flew on the two inaugural services. On arrival in Bangkok and Toronto, the A380 was unveiled to local media, travel trade and key government officials.

The A380 is the world’s only twin-deck airliner, with 35 per cent more seats than its closest rival. It is the most environmentally-advanced commercial aircraft in the sky today, offering better fuel economy than most hybrid passenger cars. The A380 burns up to 20 per cent less fuel per seat than today’s next largest aircraft, and is quieter, generating less than half the noise of other aircraft on takeoff.

Tim Clark, President, Emirates Airline said: “Emirates is delighted to celebrate its inaugural A380 services to Thailand and Canada. The aircraft with its large capacity and excellent operating economies is a pillar of growth, both for the airline and the destination. In Thailand, the introduction of the super jumbo will support the local government’s multi-million dollar promotional drive to boost tourism arrivals f r o m the high-yield Middle East region. At the same time the higher-capacity A380 will help address the strong demand for passenger and cargo services on the Dubai-Toronto route which is currently restricted by the bi-lateral agreement to three flights per week.”

Hailing the arrival of Emirates’ A380 as a positive development for Thailand’s tourism industry, Mr. Chaisak Angkasuwan, Deputy Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Transport, Thailand said: “We are delighted Emirates selected Bangkok as the first Far East gateway for its revolutionary A380 product. Our current marketing and trade campaigns focus on promoting Thailand as an ideal holiday destination in the Middle East. We welcome the opportunity to partner with Emirates to grow the tourism potential f r o m this region.”

Lloyd McCoomb, President and CEO of the Greater Toronto Airport Authority (GTAA) said: “The GTAA is honoured to be part of this historic day. We are pleased that this route has proven so successful for Emirates and we are very excited to welcome the A380 to Toronto Pearson. This is exactly what this airport was rebuilt for – to allow for new and larger aircraft that will be the future of the airline business.”

Mr. Clark added: “With air travel due to triple in the next 18 years and constraints on traffic rights and airport slots to continue, larger capacity aircraft such as the A380 are key to Emirates’ plans to meet increasing passenger demand. We have ordered 58 A380s and each one of these has been carefully planned for our present and future requirements. Our next A380 destination will be Seoul on 1st December, and will represent Emirates’ first A380 service to North East Asia.”

British Airways Launches New Routes To The Caribbean

British Airways is launching new twice-weekly flights to Montego Bay in Jamaica and Punta Cana in the Dominican Republic, reinforcing its position as the airline with more flights to the Caribbean than any other UK carrier. The new routes commence October 2009 with the airline also increasing services to other Caribbean favourites. Richard Tams, head of sales, commented that they are “popular destinations with our customers and it’s due to demand that we’re increasing the number of flights to the region.”

The addition of Montego Bay alongside the existing Gatwick-Kingston route makes it easier than ever before for customers to choose their perfect holiday to Jamaica. London Cabs Are Ranked Best In The World, Reports Hotels.com

Hotels.com has revealed that London taxis have been voted the best in the world for the second year running. A poll of international travellers* has shown that 33% of those surveyed said that London’s black cabs were the best. 


Despite being named the most expensive city for cabs, London’s taxi drivers pulled in the most votes for a number of different categories including friendliness of drivers, quality of driving and knowledge of area.

The capital’s taxis beat off competition f r o m New York (favourite amongst 17% of travellers) and Berlin (which came in third place with 6% of the vote). The Hotels.com survey found that the Spanish city of Madrid and the Danish capital of Copenhagen completed the top five. Bangkok, famed for its tuk tuk taxis, was a surprise entry into the top ten, beating both Dublin and Paris to the number seven slot.

Taxis are one of the first experiences that many travellers have on arrival in a new city, so it is significant that the capital’s taxis are making such a good impression on visitors to the UK. In fact, the research found that cabs are by far the most popular method of travel f r o m airport to hotel.

The European poll also looked at the top taxi destinations for cleanliness, value, quality of driving, knowledge of the area, friendliness, safety and availability. 16% of those polled found London cab drivers the friendliest, with Dublin coming in a close second with 11% while Paris was regarded by 16% of those surveyed as the rudest taxi drivers in the world. London taxi drivers were also commended by a third (33%) of travellers for knowing their city better than other city cab companies around the world and a quarter of those questioned ranked London cabs as the safest overall.

Gulf Air, The National Carrier Of The Kingdom Of Bahrain Has Announced It Will Be Adding Additional Flights And Capacity To Several Of Its Key Destinations This Summer

The move follows a prediction by the airline that the summer travel demand to many of its key destinations will be strong despite the current economic climate.

The airline has expanded its flights to Frankfurt from 9 to 11 per week while increasing its flights to Kuala Lumpur to a daily service. Asia’s other popular tourist destinations Bangkok and Kathmandu will see double daily flights from Bahrain during the summer season.

Flights to Tehran will become a daily service, while flights to Manila have been increased to 12 per week. Destinations in the Levent region will see bigger planes offering more seats to meet the summer rush.

Gulf Air has also expanded its code share agreement with American Airlines so that it now covers more than 40 cities in the United States giving multiple and seamless connections to its customers.

The new Boeing 777 aircraft, which recently joined the airline as part of its re-fleeting and product-enhancement strategy, have been drafted to the airline’s busiest routes – London, Bangkok, Manila and Kuala Lumpur. Increasing capacity and offering customers access to a state-of-the-art flying experience.

“While many people are talking about the global economic turmoil, we are still very focused on the needs of our customers. The summer schedule means we can offer a wider range of frequencies and connecting flights to our most popular destinations,” said Gulf Air Chief Executive Officer Mr. Björn Näf.

Aer Lingus 999 Nudes And No Hidden Extras

Aer Lingus has launched its new No Hidden Extras fare from Gatwick by gathering together a flashmob of 999 naked members of the public gathered in London’s Jubilee Gardens on Sunday 15th March.

The 999 Nudes swapped their day wear for skimpy Shamrock bikinis in order to symbolise St Patrick’s Day just around the corner.

The 999 volunteers all assembled at the Albert Embankment and marched along the South Bank until they reached the Jubilee Gardens where hundreds of site-seers turned their attention away from the likes of Big Ben and watched in amusement as the 999 Nudes enjoyed the early spring London sunshine.

The 999 Nudes were recruited for Aer Lingus via a social media campaign, using popular online community sites such as Facebook and Twitter. Over 2,000 people registered, with 999 places offered on a first come basis. In return for taking part, the 999 Nudes received two free return flights from Gatwick to one of the eight new European destinations, including flights to Vienna and flights to Munich.

Nudes of all shapes and ages took part in the event, which even included several over sixties stripping off for their Aer Lingus free flights. The crowd consisted of around 500 men and 500 women – not surprisingly, it was the men who were first to strip off.

Aer Lingus Corporate Affairs Director, Enda Corneille, commented: “We had a police visit this morning where we were warned that if any of the participants were completely nude, they would be liable to a fine for ‘indecent exposure’. However, once out of site of the cautious police, many of the participants ignored police warnings and stripped off for the bewildered, but eager, on-looking crowds, who captured the event on their camera phones.

“We have had such a great reaction to today’s stunt both from our volunteers and from the general public, that I’m confident we will get the £9.99 message across – it’s a fantastic offer. We launch on April 6th but after today, people are going to know a lot more about who Aer Lingus are.”

Emirates airline marks the arrival of its non-stop eco-efficient service between Dubai and San Francisco

Emirates, one of the world’s fastest-growing international airlines, marks the arrival of its first non-stop service between Dubai and San Francisco, at San Francisco International Airport (SFO).

At a media briefing held after the arrival of the flight, His Highness Sheikh Ahmed bin Saeed Al-Maktoum, Chairman and Chief Executive Emirates Airline and Group was joined by Steve Kava, San Francisco Mayor’s Chief of Staff, and San Francisco International Airport Director John Martin.

“Emirates promises Bay Area travellers and businesspeople an opportunity to reach Dubai and key transit markets including the Indian Subcontinent and Africa easily and more quickly than ever before,” said Sheikh Ahmed.

“This new service from SFO creates a critical new connection between Northern California and Dubai – a destination for business flights and tourism unlike any other in the world. We look forward to contributing a significant, positive economic impact for San Francisco and its surrounding region with our new service,” he added.

The arrival of Emirates airline will increase tourism and business traffic, bringing in travellers from the Middle East, Indian Subcontinent and Africa; creating new jobs in the Bay Area while generating state and local tax, and business revenues. The non-stop air link will also help the growth of trade between California and the UAE which in 2007 saw close to $950 million worth of exports.

“The arrival of Emirates Airline to San Francisco is an economic boon for the city of San Francisco,” said San Francisco Mayor Gavin Newsom. “Emirates’ new route will bring new jobs and revenue to San Francisco, while creating a vital new corridor for business and tourism between the Bay Area and Dubai.”

Emirates’ inaugural flight to Dubai also demonstrated the best the airline industry can offer in environmental efficiency. The first Dubai-San Francisco non-stop service marked the world’s longest green flight, on which Emirates employed multiple eco-efficient initiatives to save fuel and emissions.

Emirates has made a multi-billion-dollar investment in new, eco-efficient aircraft, and on its San Francisco route it will deploy the state-of-the-art Boeing 777-200LR. Emirates worked closely with government agencies in Dubai, Iceland, Russia, Canada the United States and other countries to plot the most environmentally-conscientious trip possible to save approximately 2,000 gallons of fuel and 40,000 pounds of carbon emissions on the 16-hour direct service.

The 777-200LR is a member of the most fuel-efficient airplane family operating today. Along with its ability to connect Dubai International Airport and San Francisco non-stop, the 777-200LR brings better environmental performance to destinations around the world. In one year, a fleet of 16 twin-engine aircraft powered by GE90 engines will emit 141,000 fewer tons of greenhouse gas emissions than airframes requiring four engines.

Superbreak becomes preferred supplier for UK airport and cruise port hotel stopovers for TUI UK

Superbreak has announced that is it entering into a new commercial deal with TUI UK, supplying airport and cruise port hotel stopovers for the Germany-based company.

The agreement covers Touristik Union International’s (TUI) agency network, which includes Thomson and First Choice, as well as other non-retail distribution channels. Previously, Superbreak supplied only airport hotels in London and throughout the UK for First Choice.

Superbreak offers 160 hotels across 35 UK air and cruise ports, with the majority providing both hotel-only and inclusive hotel plus parking offers. Airport hotels in Manchester, as well as other properties across the UK will be included in the new deal.

Superbreak sales director, Ian Mounser said: “As well as helping TUI to grow their UK airport hotel sales, we are confident it will help them grow their core UK hotel short break sales also.

“In addition, it reinforces our position as the leading supplier for UK airport hotel bookings from the retail travel high street.”

TUI was an industrial and transportation company until 2001, after which the company reinvented itself as a tourism, shipping and logistics company.
