Affordable art goes on sale in Battersea Park as 120 galleries gather for the popular spring art fair

The biannual Affordable Art Fair, which returns to Battersea Park this spring, from Thursday 15th to Sunday 18th March 2012, is the leading showcase in the UK for contemporary art under £4,000. A regular feature in Battersea Park since it first appeared in 1999, the fair has become a well-loved institution in London ‘s art scene and anyone wanting to pick up some affordable art can save even more money by booking a cheap London hotel so they can enjoy the fair and stay in London for the weekend.

Gathering 120 art galleries from all over Europe in one place, the fair offers visitors the chance to buy original works of art by up and coming artists without paying over the odds for their name and reputation. Alongside are works by well-known artists at relatively low prices – flower paintings by Marc Quinn, a self-portrait by Sam Taylor-Wood and a dot painting by Damien Hirst all featured in last year’s October art fair.

The price ceiling of £4,000 and the compulsory labelling of all artwork means visitors can see, at a glance, what they can and can’t afford, and the huge array of paintings, sculpture, photography and prints means there is something to suit every taste.

Every fair has an emerging artists’ showcase promoting the work of recent graduates and this spring the theme is ‘Sum of Substance’, an exhibition curated by art and design publishers Jotta featuring 19 artists from well known arts colleges including the Slade, Camberwell College of Arts and Chelsea College of Art and Design among others.

The fair also has a programme of free and informal talks and tours as well as a crèche and an education area, making this an event that all the family can enjoy, even children as young as two years old. For those who prefer to avoid the weekend rush late view tickets, available for Wednesday and Thursday nights, are the best option, giving shoppers the chance to browse the art in a more relaxed setting with a glass of wine to hand.

After a successful inaugural art fair on Hampstead Heath in October last year, the Affordable Art Fair returns to the North London park again this autumn so there will be two further Affordable Art Fairs later in the year: at Battersea, from 25th to 28th October 2012; and at Hampstead, 1st to 4th November 2012. The AAF also has a global presence with ten fairs (and two affiliate fairs) in six countries across three continents.

For more information on the Affordable Art Fair, visit LondonTown.com where you can find the latest information on hotel rooms, availability and prices, all on one website which also gives useful information on London ‘s sights, events and restaurants. If you are bringing the family, you won’t be alone, the website also lists family friendly activities, hotels and restaurants.

Warner Leisure Hotels has revealed details of its upcoming festive breaks – for Christmas, New Year and in between – for the 2009 season.

The announced four and five night Christmas breaks and the three and four night New Year breaks are all full board and feature a feast of optional daytime activities, relaxing leisure facilities, traditional Christmas dinner or a Gala New Year Eve’s dinner, and the unique blend of Warner entertainment. A variety of live performances are planned across the various Warner Leisure Hotels.

In both, Havana and Cienfuegos, dilapidated buildings continue to deteriorate from the relentless tropical climate—salt from the ocean, heavy rainfall, and the occasional hurricane. And the economy of a fifty-year trade embargo bears down on the city—its once grand houses yielding to decades of deprivation, toward a sense of dispossession.

It is uncertain what is going to happen with these structures, the historic architecture of Havana and Cienfuegos. In the same way, these photographs to be seen without the embalming effect of mats and glass—instead, they are coated with encaustic as the medium to finish each work. Like walking down a city street, viewers are encouraged to walk by these images of buildings, to hear the noise of life inside, resisting any fetishism of poverty or preciousness of pathos, hearing the song that animates the city, tracing the circuit of our steps, always moving from one place to the next.

Alejandra Chaverri is a photographer based in the Bay Area. She has been exhibiting her art locally, nationally and internationally for the past six years. Alejandra creates intricate mixed media series of photographs, mostly using encaustic medium, layering, hand deckling, tearing or sewing the prints. Besides her own photography series on social commentaries and creative process, Alejandra works on digitizing documents of historic interest and teaches photography to local community groups and privately.

Summer Photo Competition via Flickr By Warner Leisure Hotels

Warner Leisure Hotels, the first UK hotel group to launch a digital photo competition via Flickr for its guests, has announced the completion of the final judging of the Warner Leisure Hotels Spring Photo Competition.

The competition began in March and guests were invited to submit spring images taken at any of the Warner Leisure Hotels locations, or around and about the locality. Entrants were then allowed to upload and share their photos on the Warner Leisure Hotels group within Flickr.com.

The judges were greatly impressed by the diversity of images, a selection of which is being shown online. Competition was fierce, and after much deliberation the winning image was chosen as a stunning scene of the Bembridge coast in the Isle of Wight, at low tide. A cheeky squirrel caught on the lawn at Bodelwyddan Castle stole second place, followed by the picturesque seaside view off the newly decked terrace at Norton Grange on the Isle of Wight.

Warner Leisure Hotels has thirteen locations, both country and coastal, ideal for lazy UK summer holidays and the perfect opportunity to capture some idyllic photos.

Following on f r o m the success of the spring competition, and all the fantastic shots that were submitted, Warner Leisure Hotels is again challenging both hotel guests and the general public to enter their favourite summer images taken either at one of the locations, or indeed in the locality.

Adding to the available photo opportunities, four of the historic gardens owned by Warner Leisure Hotels – Thoresby Hall on Nottinghamshire, Holme Lacy House in Herefordshire, Cricket St Thomas in Somerset and Littlecote House in Berkshire are opening for The National Gardens Scheme.

The Bogside Modern – An Open-Air Gallery In Derry – A Project That Is Now A Must-See Destination For Anyone Visiting Ireland

Last Friday saw the publication of a book called The People’s Gallery about the work of The Bogside Artists from Derry, N.Ireland. This informative and challenging book, written by them, is on the subject of murals in general, but more specifically, about their own work as painters in the heart of Derry itself, the Bogside. It contains not only spectacular photos of their huge murals from their own archives but commentaries from playwright Brian Friel, Bernadette McAliskey, John Hume, retired Bishop Daly and other figures from the worlds of art and politics. Among its pages you will find humour, anecdote, historical fact and a step-by-step account of the making of a mural. It explores the American-Ireland connection in depth and gives a highly entertaining synopsis of that period of political and spiritual ferment known as The Sixties. For students and visitors alike it is also packed full of historical facts that will make Irish history a breeze for those who want to learn about it.

In the wake of the ongoing fiasco that is „The Turner Prize”, this book comes as a breath of fresh air to the musty studios and galleries of modern art. It serves to remind the alienated public what art was originally meant to be and to do. It is a measure of the artists’ achievement that they were able to do this work in the face of impossible circumstances and general indifference from the arts funding bodies throughout the UK. It is a measure of their resolve that they continue to paint, in service to their goal of 1993 to make of the Bogside an open-air gallery, a people’s gallery, that they have humorously dubbed “The Bogside Modern”.

Nobel Peace Laureate John Hume launched the book on the afternoon of Friday 30th February 2009. He had this to say:

I feel very privileged and honoured to be with the Bogside Artists on this very important day for the launch of their book - "The People' Gallery". The book is a fascinating and entertaining read. As well as accounts of each of the twelves murals, there is a short history of Ireland with special reference to Derry, an interesting look back at world event in the second half of the twentieth century, especially the struggle for civil rights in America and here in the North....As Brian Friel the world renowned playwright said of their work - "The work of the Bogside Artists is celebrated locally and internationally, but it is their reputation that is important both to the artists and to their locality. ....This publication is an important record of a pivotal period of our history, and I have no doubt that it will make an enormous contribution to the respect for and interest in our city. ... My warmest congratulations again to the Bogside Artists on this outstanding work and I wish them every success."

The Bogside Artists’ Studio in Derry, N.Ireland is home to the three men who painted the famous People’s Gallery of the Bogside. There, the artists give presentations on their history and conduct tours of their twelve large-scale murals. Two of the artists have recently returned from a U.S. promotional tour for their book The People’s Gallery. Lavishly illustrated with unique photos, it throws open a high window onto three decades of conflict. You can find out more about the artists from http://www.bogsideartists.com where you can also order their book.

Unlike the celebrated murals in Mexico it should be noted that the majority of these murals were painted while the conflict was still going on. Moreover, they were financed, not by the government, but by the small contributions of the local citizens. Tom, William and Kevin collected the pennies, cap-in-hand to finance a project that is now a must-see destination for anyone visiting Ireland.
